i'm a 100% certified Monday morning quarterback.
I attended the Auburn game. On at least 2 misses (probably more) I observed Gabe Cupps launch his jump shot with a "sideways" jump. By sideways I mean that his jump was not straight up and was not on a line with the basket.
Imagine a warship targeting an enemy ship. The gunner has to have a firing solution that accounts for the motion of the warship and the motion of the enemy. This calculation is so complicated that it can only be quickly calculated by a computer.
In basketball the goal doesn't move. The firing solution for the shooter is still quite complicated if his jump is sideways.
Since Gabe is the son of a coach and since the IU coaching staff knows a bit about shooting, I don't understand why this sideways jump hasn't been corrected. I can almost guarantee that if Gabe jumps straight up, his shooting percentage will also go straight up.
Keith Smart's shot was a very difficult shot. I was surprised while watching that he dropped it. Steve Alford, Calbert Cheney, Jorden Hulls, etc. always went straight up.
