Students by their government name without concent of the parents.

My whole school would have been fired because of me. I'm not sure half the teachers even knew my real name ince the first week was over.

Seems kind of petty to me.

I don’t have a problem with this. And I think we both know that what’s going here bears no resemblance to teachers simply not knowing your name.

I’m 100% in favor of keeping parents of minors in their rightful place - rather than schools overstepping their bounds.

When we were bringing our kids up, there was no doubt with their schools and teachers who was in charge. And it wasn’t them. We were deputizing them.

But this is one of the benefits of private schools. We have to choose them and pay them. And they know full well we could unchoose them any time we wanted.

So if my legal name is Thomas and I go by "Tom", to call me Tom the teacher first has to get parental approval?

If your birth certificate name is Edward, but you go buy Ted, what is your "legal" name. A quick Google says it is the name on birth certificate or legal documents. If those say Edward, it seems to me Ted is in violation.
Yes. Have you ever filled out a document that says full name and then there is a space for preferred name? I sure have.

I bet $ that you preferred being called Felicia, didn't you.

Ohio is trying to pass a similar law but in reverse. The teacher may use the name on your birth certificate and if they refuse to call the student by their preferred name, there are no repercussions, even if both the student and the parents want the teacher to use the preferred name.

Anytime I see something like this I can't help but think there were other issues with her and since this law exists was used as a pretense to cut some chaff.

The student requested being called that but parents notified the school. Something doesn't add.

But this isn’t about you. I find the story odd. What’s odd is people think this is the only reason she was let go. I’d bet there is more to this. Like maybe she has pushed boundaries of some sort for years.

What's it matter if it is about me? No individual parent should get to decide if using preferred names is legal/illegal for the entire country/state. We are all allowed our opinion on the matter (even though our opinion amounts to **** when it comes down to it)

There may be more to the story (likely is) but I think teachers should able to call kids by their preferred name and not be in fear that the kid's parents can get them fired.

Why would it matter if a kid has a preferred name?

Unless the kid is writing a curse word as their preferred name, wgaf
"Because my daughter's name is Michelle, not Mike, regardless of what she says. We're dealing with the situation as a family and don't need you encouraging what we believe to be the wrong side of that family issue."

Something like that.

And if your daughter wants to be called Mike, then we will call her Mike.

You can deal with it all you want. And if she wants to change what she is called later, then great.

That's how it SHOULD go.

You can deal with it all you want and if she changes her mind, we will change what we call her.

Then my reply might be something like, "You should stick to raising your own kids and I'll raise mine. Michelle is not your child."

While we're at it, should we suspend students for calling the student the name the student prefers even if their parents don't approve?

Yep, in my old township if a child’s legal name is Christopher and he wants to be called Chris, you have to get written permission from the parents to do so.

then home school your kid. We aren't an extension of your poor parenting choices. our job is to teach your kid, not fight with them about their preferred name.
I keep forgetting you're Hickory.

As a teacher, you're not an extension of anything parenting related without the express consent of that parent. You are there to teach the kid and not argue about their name, so stick to the teaching part.

Sounds like you'd be in favor of corporal punishment regardless of parental consent.

I don't see how you could. The kids aren't in any kind of position with authority, unlike the teacher/staff members.
A school has wide latitude for enforcing rules that establish an orderly learning environment. The school would certainly intervene of a bunch if kids were calling another student a name the student didn't want to be called. And the kids have a much higher impact on the encouragement that the parents are concerned about than the teacher, particularly in high school.

"We're dealing with the situation as a family and don't need you encouraging what we believe to be the wrong side of that family issue."

Just trying to see how seriously we take this issue.

Had a male business partner named Lorlys ( middle name Edgar).

As a teenager he told his father he wanted to be called Bill. His father said, "You can call yourself whatever you want".

From then on his legal name was Lorlys, but everyone called him Bill. Am sure this included his teachers.

These days, why do our politicians and their laws have to make life so complicated?
