Finebaum, finally

At least Finebaum doesn't look at reality and deny it. SEC schools have some advantages, they don't have a lock on the best coaches. Just as IU has shown, coaching makes a difference on how teams perform. It also take players but schools can get players from all over the country.
Here's the deal...the money matters...a lot. I follow English soccer and the parity of the Premier League has increased dramatically because mid-table teams can afford to keep their players and aren't just feeders for Manchester United like they were for the 30 years prior.

Look at the way Indiana was able to keep CCC. How many transfers did we lose that were going to start here? We took Cal's starting QB. We are way up the food chain now and the only thing that matters more than our program's historic futility is our $$$.

The B1G is going to become like the AFC. Ohio State might be Kansas City, but we are very close to entering a world where a 10-2 team plays a 9-3 team for the B1G Championship.

The reality is you aren't as likely to see top talent sitting on the bench until they're a junior/senior like it was more common to happen in the past. Arch Manning is a rarity because he knew he was guaranteed a starting spot his junior year and was getting paid like a top end starter. However, there has always been ample talent in college football, it's just been stored within depth charts of the more privileged teams.

Well, those teams may be able to afford to pay top dollar for who they think are the best starters but how much are they willing to pay for their back-ups? We know there isn't much of a drop off with those teams between their starters and their backups. IU has enough money to pay more for those backups to start at IU, and we know with that type of talent, Cig and staff have the ability to make a team that is more competitive than those more privileged teams.

I'll leave you with this one final thing. The more prominent cfball schools are sort of stuck choosing between paying top dollar for a veteran transfer to start or gamble and pay big dollars for an incoming freshman's potential in hopes of having them for a few years. If they take the vet, that leaves the freshman for the taking. If they take the freshman, that leaves the veterans. My point is, so far colleges have still maintained a larger emphasis on the top HS recruits vs. portal guys, but we have seen them slowly pivot more towards the portal this year and matching what Indiana did last year. Once the pendulum swings too far that way, Indiana can change its path and go heavy on those top HS recruits and unlike smaller schools, we have the ability to keep them around. This is why I expect we continue to see parity at the top, there is too much talent to go around when it's not buried in the depth chart.

I think of Finebaum like Rachel Maddow. Not interested in thoughts or opinions. Both paid hacks. Many others fit here too. Massive grin! I no longer watch ESPN, even before games. I will watch the broadcast if no other options. Go Hoosiers!
