Fife Gone

Thank you.

I’m just explaining how this should have been done.

DF was apparently a cancer on our program and this could have been managed better, yes; but if I’m the IU AD, I’m still likely reasonably pleased how public opinion has turned against him in a matter of hours.

Really it hasn’t been all for naught.
Who is painting this as DF was being a cancer on our program? Assistants are let go all the time. Apparently, Woodson didn’t seem to gel with Fife, who was essentially brought in by Dolson. It’s not a huge surprise since coaches like to work with their guys.

Well that may be the case the Woodson hire was sold as he was going to have these two great basketball minds around him and now both will be gone. That was one way people bought in. Instead Woodson is relying on NBA consultants which is what it is but Dolson should just have been honest then about how things were going to be run. I do not think any former players we will running to coach under Woodson after this.
Woodson was a bad hire in my opinion

It’s all over the internet, man.

Look, I’m just trying to point out that the radical swing in the Fife “narrative” over the past few hours has been really remarkable - from returning Hoosier hero to bumbling, insubordinate failure - AND that it could have been managed even better than it was.

Regardless, mission accomplished: we’re now all glad to see him go. Hoosier Nation united and all that, shouting the same slogans. Hence, “Really, it hasn’t all been for naught” in my post previous.

College assistants are there to recruit. Our recruiting has not been good. It’s borderline a disaster. I assume this is to make room for a better recruiter.

What on Earth are you talking about? He didn’t fit with Woodson. It’s as simple as that. Asst coaches aren’t retained in droves. Find me a coach at this level who hasn’t been terminated along the way. It’ll take you an extremely long time.

This was handled in a perfectly fine manor.

This won’t help those saying there was no disconnect in the coaching staff…

Cool story. What really happened was you started speculating about a mass exodus of players and coaches w 1/3 of the season still to go. Can’t remember anyone saying it was hugs and kisses on the bench at that point . It was more that everyone knew you really didn’t have any meaningful knowledge or insight. And still don’t.

anyway, hope that helps!

Fife won’t be the last assistant to leave this off-season, and Lander won’t be the last transfer. Everything that was reported was correct.

No, you’re going to find *me* one.

Woodson has more basketball experience than Matta and Fife combine. Neither were hired to teach Woodson the game of basketball. Matta was hired to help Woodson navigate through the college basketball world for his first year or two on the job. Matta isn't going anywhere yet and him leaving 2-3 years down the road doesn't change the reason why he was hired. No one is expecting Matta to hold Woodson's hand for 4 or 5 more years.

I bet there is a very real chance Randy Whitman is the new assistant coach hired as Woodson has been taking a ton of advice from him since the start of the year. This directly contradicts your once again negative and ever sky is falling viewpoint of Indiana basketball.

Could you shut up one time🤫

In what way? How else do you fire somebody?
You tell them to seek other opportunities. Then you give them a reasonable amount of time to do that. Anything less looks like this. Bush league.

And, trust me, as a Purdue fan, I know of Fife’s reputation. I still think he was done wrong.

Agreed. IU’s AD should have been leaking about DF over a longer period of time so that the fans could begin to accept what was going to happen. All this revealed about DF being a wrecker in one day is head spinning.
Jesus, they already leaked it. It was talked about everywhere.

The only thing this proves is that Fife was likely the one stirring the shit with Rabjohns, Dakich, etc. If so, he got what he deserved. I’d remind you that you also claimed that Woodson did not have the authority to fire Fife. That was clearly bullshit…

Fife is the primal traitor. And that’s a *good* thing: every regime needs one.

What players did Fife bring in or was lead recruiter on? This may have more to do with bringing in talent than anything else?
You have to be kidding. Less than an year is no judge of recruiting abilities.

This news just became official today and already there are posts claiming all manner of knowledge, sources, and speculation regarding the situation. Coach Woodson is a Hoosier and I support him as the Head Coach at IU. Dane Fife is one of my all time favorite Hoosier players; loved his grit and will to win. I understand it could simply be a matter of a bad fit. However, to hire a guy away from a comfortable positions after a decade at MSU to let him go after one year certainly is not a good look no matter the circumstances. The posts on this forum alone about this only further the splintered dynamic that has been IU basketball (including the fans) for years now.

Following the BTT and the first game (and win) in the NCAA tournament in six year, I was very optimistic about the future of the IU program. The news out of IU today and the resulting reactions of the fans via social media have soured my optimism already. Fan forums are obviously designed for opinions and discussion and that is why we are all posting here. Yet, the reactions seem very extreme one way or the other and that is certainly the last thing IU needed to end this season of hope. Regardless, I will be for IU2WIN today and always.

while short time frame might be hard to judge from purely a commits perspective, Fife was apparently replaced as lead recruiter for several recruits because things weren’t going well

To put this into proper perspective, alleged sexual abusers have been treated better.

Things I’ve read on other forums.

1. DF is a know-it-all, a rather unbearable bright young thing.
2. He leaks program info.
3. Dolson forced DF on MW.
4. DF has downplayed NIL.
5. He offered a recruit after being told not to.
6. The HS coaches in the state don’t like him.
This….Dan Dakich is a huge red flag in all this too. A lot of the early rumors and leaks came straight from him. Dane couldn’t keep the pie hole shut.

This isnt the gotcha you think it is. In circumstances where this might be true, it’s always about the employer trying to avoid acknowledging a pattern of past issues with others and/or keep a lid on a history of ignoring the accused abusers behavior.

This surprises me a bit, and I’m a little disappointed that things didn’t work out. As somebody else posted, why is everyone assuming the issue is Woodson and not Fife. Dolson hired Woodson as the HC. Woodson clearly feels there is a fitment issue. I want a HC that takes action when there is a problem instead of worrying about feelings. So I’m happy to see he isn’t afraid to do what he feels is right for the team.

Good luck to Dane. I wish he and his family the best.
