Favorite Movie Scenes

The Rewatchables just did a podcast on There Will Be Blood. It came out in 2007, the same year as No Country for Old Men. The podcasters were arguing TWBB was actually the better movie between the two.

I don't think they've ever been more wrong. No Country is the best movie of the 2000s so far, in my mind. It is perfect. Not a syllable of dialogue is off; every wide shot is impactful. Much of the storytelling is done without talking, and using the camera.

I couldn't pick just one scene, so:

I’m with Bill, Chris, & Sean. TWBB is the best movie of the past 20 years or so. DDL as Daniel Plainview is as good as any performance I’ve seen…

Well, 20 was probably an exaggeration meant to imply too many times for me to remember.

The original Star Wars trilogy
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Caddyshack
Animal House
Hoosiers
Bull Durham
Die Hard
Godfather I and II
Usual Suspects
Resevoir Dogs
Pulp Fiction
Wild Things (certain scenes)
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Agreed, not sure about 20, but my definite multi-watch (3 or more) list:

Fight Club
The Breakfast Club
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Snatch
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Gettysburg
Last of the Mohicans
Dances with Wolves
Little Big Man
Sahara
Midway
Zulu
Wedding Crashers
Tommy Boy
Happy Gilmore
Old School
Step Brothers
Talledega Nights
Once Upon a Time in the West
Casino
Goodfellas
Grandma's Boy
Where Eagles Dare
Kelly's Heroes
Bataan
Anzio
Green Berets
Forrest Gump
L.A. Confidential
Top Gun
Clockwork Orange
Braveheart
The Patriot
Scarface
Platoon

Then there are a ton of kids movies (Disney ones, Home ALone, etc.)

This scene and Dave's Dad talking about the campus buildings becoming too good for him after he helped build them and not belonging anymore hits closer and closer to home as I get older.

Still old mean old Dave . I like The line about Jesus never going more than 50 miles from home and Cyril says well look what happened to him. A really under rated movie.

Still can't believe they filled in the quarry: I never got a chance to go out there.

Watching Mr Deeds Goes To Town , Gary Cooper version and the court scene at the end is good .

Was watching Hoosiers earlier today and as good as it is I guess when you watch it enough some things couldve been better.

I love the opening except at the start it is a 4 lane highway with a grass median, dont think that existed in 1951 Indiana at least not in the boonies

Hackman was too old really and his leather jacket was annoying.

He is starting in the school after school has started and its cold and they leave the windows on their cars open when they park.

Barbara Hershey was just bad casting in my opinion.

On the other side Fern was great.

When I have seen a movie too many times I start to notice these things.

US 40 was 4 lane with a median in the 50s.

no doubt there we many others.

My dad always lamented how far apart some of the schools were that were represented in teh movie. He played high school ball at an extremely small school in the late 50's early 60's in Miami County and said the furthest they ever traveled was to play the Indiana Deaf School in Indianapolis** and that was one time. Most games were schools in and around Miami County.

**They got smoked as well

I doubt many in 51 and they werent on the way to Hickory AKA Milan. US 40 may have been 4 lane but didnt have a wide grass median

Like Terhune and Oolitic? While catchy names a longways apart even not knowing where '' Hickory '' actually was.

Probably my favorite death scene. If you haven't scene the film, you won't get some of the symbolism, but it's powerful no matter what. And also a good chance to remind you, watch Big Fish. Watch it tonight. Especially if you had a father.

.

it had a wide grass median at least from Indy to Ohio. (and probably much of going west from Indy to Ill as well).

don't know when it first went 4 lane with a median, but i do remember traveling it in the 50s, and doubt it was brand new.

and here's a pic from the 40s of traffic from Hickory for a big game that night in Terhune. (talk about a tough ticket).

Just last night I was watching The History Guy podcast about Alexander Dumas and his father. This movie came to mind. The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte were stories about his real life father who passed away when Alexander was four years old. His father lead an amazing life and the memories that were handed down became the books not to be forgotten.

Maybe not my favorite, but to this day maybe the toughest for me to watch
In the war category...the scenes where Pvt. Gump rescues Lt.Dan and others...the effects of the sound of bullets flying overhead was the most accurate.

The scene was based on a real event, where Sgt. Sammy Davis earned his Medal of Honor.

Sammy spent a lot of time in Indiana.
