ESPN sucks.

It seems like the pundits completely forgot about Alabama being whooped by Clemson in the 2018 championship game.

Common sense would dictate cheering for Notre Dame to lessen the sting from last night.

When you have SEC teams playing 5 ranked teams in conference AND 1 OOC you are going to get criticism…..deserved or not.
It's not.

So, in your brain, if we played Alabama in the non-con and lost, that woulda made us more likely to make the playoff? Over Alabama? Nonsense.

We don't have a roster that will beat a top 15 team on the road. Not this year. I think we demonstrated that pretty clearly over 8 quarters.

The only way we were making it was with a soft schedule.

I think the soft schedule winding up in a playoff took dominoes falling in weird ways. With what you knew at the beginning of the season, a top 10 OOC game would have increased your chances. Of course, you would have needed to win that game which was entirely possible.

A national playoff tournament is not a valid tournament when teams start the thing off on their home field. I'm not saying it would have made any difference last night but it is still BS. I say give the SEC the College Football Playoff and seed everyone else in the old school bowl games. See how the SEC likes claiming a championship with an asterisk every year. Otherwise, the SEC bs will continue for eternity; particularly when the media gets aroused every time they discuss the SEC.

Go look at Michigan’s schedule next year.. The only good team they play is OSU. If they go 11-1 do they take the same bs we did

Aug. 30 — vs. New Mexico

Sept. 6 — at Oklahoma

Sept. 13 — vs. Central Michigan

Sept. 20 — at Nebraska

Sept. 27 — BYE

Oct. 4 — vs. Wisconsin

Oct. 11 — at USC

Oct. 18 — vs. Washington

Oct. 25 — at Michigan State

Nov. 1 — vs. Purdue

Nov. 8 — BYE

Nov. 15 — at Northwestern (Wrigley Field)

Nov. 22 — at Maryland

Nov. 29 — vs. Ohio State
Not a chance in Hades

SMU is down 14-0 to Penn State. Do they not belong in the playoffs either?
They don't.

Lost to the only (2) ranked teams they played (Clemson and BYU).

Committee was completely wrong to leave Alabama + Ole Miss out.

Not only that, they made a system that not only guarantees teams like Arizona State and Boise State a bid, but gives them a BYE.

Penn State gets a mediocre SMU team at home, then a Boise team that they're going to be double digit favorites over. Oregon beats them, and their reward is either a re-match with Ohio State, or Tennessee.

Texas gets a mediocre Clemson team at home, then plays an Arizona State team that they'll be double digit favorites over. Georgia beats them, and their reward is an ND team that might be the best in the country.

The entire system is garbage.

Alabama and Ole Miss each lost three games, and had multiple bad losses. Miami has a case although they struggled against average competition.

Just me, but I look at it as who would be favored on a neutral field. Would Bama be favored on a neutral field versus SMU? Yes.

I hope ND wins it all, now that IU is out. I’ll pull for an Indiana team as long as it isn’t Purdue, and losing to the eventual champion would make our loss a little easier to rationalize.

This might get me in trouble but I don’t think Cignetti is particularly well liked nationally. Not fair but I think that’s part of it.
He is cocky. Why wouldn’t he be? He took the worst program in history to the playoffs in one season. He has won something like four conference coach of the year awards. Never had a losing season.

I’m not making any judgment, just saying I think that gives people more inclination to crap on IU.

I hope they beat Georgia…. But that’s it

Exactly. To me that’s how they should do at large. After 12 games spreads tell you who “deserves” it imo.
I agree with you, although it's harder when there's less of a gap between teams.

It's obvious when you talk about Alabama vs SMU, but when it's SMU vs Indiana? South Carolina vs Miami? You can add Clemson to that mix too.

Going to Oklahoma is a legit OOC game.

I expect ND gets beat like a red headed step child by UGA. UGA is as much better than ND than ND is above IU in terms of talent.

Nope

To be fair… IU gave them every reason and opportunity to bash them. Or maybe put differently…what did IU do that would have drawn any sort of praise? They wanted to call a close game. I’m sure they were annoyed with the execution and overall soft play and approach too.
Well… They better stop covering our basketball games too. Talk about soft play, ESPN should never set foot in Assembly Hall again…. until we get a program that actually belongs to the Big Ten.
Speaking of Saban. , I wonder if he has any more daughters that he might wanna pimp out to Lane Kiffin for some more marital affair shenanigans?

The committee didn’t set up the system. The committee chose the teams to play in the system that was devised by the college football playoff organization, and the conference commissioners/athletic directors were very involved in that process. Allowing automatic bids and buys was part of the negotiation process. I believe that you will see automatic buys for conference champions go away if not next year, definitely the year after.

What I heard was that the system in place this year was the only thing that could get passed to make the 12 team playoff. I expect some tweaks but it’s hard to tell how much they could get changed. I forget the specifics but it had to be a very large majority in favor to get it done.

IU came to life against ND's second stringers to score 14 meaningless points in the last 4 minutes of the game. The 27-3 score more represents ND's complete domination of IU in every aspect of the game. Only those with rose colored glasses will try to use the final score as justification of anything.
