Emotional Izzo Strikes Again....

I played college football on scholarship. I bet very few of you in this thread did anything close to that athletically. That shit Izzo pulled doesn't fly. If I were recruiting against him I'd show that clip to every recruit and ask them if that's what they want for 4 years?

I had a position coach in college try to get physical with me in practice. He challenged me and tried to relive his glory days, without pads, against me as a blocker in a drill. I knocked the shit out of him. Bloodied his nose too by putting my facemask right into his face. It felt amazing and he never pulled that mess again. Everyone in my position group loved it. He was a bully and he couldn't back it up when push literally came to shove. Demanding excellence doesn't mean belittling, demeaning, or dehumanizing people. I wish Henry would've pushed back. Whether it's a boss or a coach, you only get to push people so hard until people push back.

Also, nothing will happen to him. As stated above, he's a rape enabler. He's also a big winner and a cash cow, so he's totally protected. Just like Knight was until he started losing.
It didnt look like Izzo touched him...

1st, what does that have to do with what he actually did do? 2nd, if he does that on national TV in the NCAA tourney, what do you think he does behind closed doors at practice? Again, I'd use that video to negatively recruit against him with every player I was competing for against him.

Knight "starting losing" is making the NCAA tournament every season for his last 15 years. The one year he failed was the '84-85' team which, in large part, went on to win our fifth banner in '87.

well - you basically quoted me about the Penn St coach scenario earlier- so Im not going to argue against myself.

I just didnt think Izzo made any physical contact at all though. Maybe I should rewatch it.

"Ward, weren't you a little hard on the Beaver?"

At least he wasn't crying after the game about injuries, or faking concern about survivors while having a suspected rapist on his bench.

I'm not saying that he touched Henry at all. If that's the confusion here, then we might be saying the same thing? My point was just that I'd use his despicable behavior towards Henry against him in recruiting. I'd also point out the fact that it was on national TV, which means you know he does that and more behind closed doors. Nobody deserves to get treated like that.

Not it doesn't! This bullshit is not why they win. The #1 reason they win is recruiting players like Miles Bridges, Josh Jackson, & the like. This foaming at the mouth, screaming at players does NOT work, in fact, in this day & age of PC softy society, & I hope Izzo continues this crap becasue it will begin to cost him sooner or later. & don't say
he's always done this", because he hasn't done this throughout his career, not to this degree, like he has lately. Perhaps he's off his meds, Or on them.

Jaren Jackson. And you are wrong about the rest too. He didn't even do anything worth mentioning, let alone declaring wrong.

Except Aaron Henry for not doing what he was supposed to do.

Izzo didn’t do any of that. He didn’t make physical contact or do anything other than yell. Any athlete competing at a high level has been through that a million times and the mature ones don’t have a problem with it, only the coddled are the ones who can’t handle coaching and are selfish whiners.

And when Izzo stops winning at the same high rate of expectations he’s created, the fans and media will turn on him. It will start with his behavior and comes with aged whispers of whether or not the game has passed him by. Spartan fans won’t be as satisfied and the media will see to it that it is piled on high.
Well said and will end up appearing as prophetic

Yes, Jaren Jackson, you're correct about that. Only, but don't reply. I couldn't possibly value your opinion any less.

Just because you played college football on scholarship doesn't mean you can't think with a pussy-whipped mIndset.

Hahahaha. What does pussy have to do with it? :p All I was saying, and clearly you missed the point, is that MY coach was a total bully. He coached with a bully mentality. He treated us like crap. He yelled and screamed instead of teaching and simply holding us accountable. We were focused on getting better so we practiced and played hard, but we all hated him.

When he pulled that stunt on me and tried to relive his glory days by blocking me, I had a free shot to clock him and I gladly did just that. With gusto. It's about respect and respect is earned. We respected the program, but we hated that coach. I didn't get motivated by screaming. I was motivated by winning and I was a serial winner. I still feel that way and I would never want to play for, or send my son to play for, a guy like Izzo.

Re-read my post please. I never accused Izzo of touching the kid. Also, he did way more than yell and he did it on national TV. He had to restrained twice. Pulled back into his chair the 2nd time. Feel free to call me out if I've made a mistake. The bench is a great motivator. Getting dressed down in that manner doesn't fly with everyone, and certainly not for me.

Football is an intense sport and I played it very well. I also played for winners. We worked hard 12 months a year. Lifting. 7 on 7. Not going home for the summer so we could workout and get better. My commitment could never be questioned. If I made a mistake then correct me, coach me, and get me better. Screaming at me like that did not motivate me at all. However, I guarantee nobody wanted to win more than me.

It’s kinda sad that being a protected bully is seen as a manly characteristic. TBH guys like Izzo and Knight are pussies at heart. If they were not protected from physical retaliation they’d be the first to stfu. Same goes for the my dad beat me crowd. It was never OK. Fathers who did or do that are criminal abusers. And classic punks.

So.your DIII position coach = a power 5 head coach with a natty. Is that what you're saying?

I dont like the guy, but he didn't do anything wrong in going after Henry. That incident actually showed what kind of leaders that team has as they restrained Izzo and could be seen telling Henry to STFU and listen.

D3 doesn't give out scholarships dumb dumb. Nice try though. Also, I don't care about that. I've explained in multiple posts above that getting screamed at like that does nothing to motivate me. Maybe that's what you like to have happen to you, but I prefer to be coached. Not intimidated.

Dane Fife was a shell of himself for 3 years under Knight. Then Davis takes over and he has an amazing senior year. Prior to that he was a poor 3 PT shooter. He was scared to make a mistake playing for Knight. He plays under Davis and is a dead-eye shooter from 3 as a senior. You telling me Dane Fife wasn't mentally tough? He was a coach's kid. Getting browbeaten and screamed at doesn't motivate everyone. As I stated above, the bench was all the motivation I needed. Trying to emasculate me to get your point across just makes me hate your guts.

Update: Here's Fife's 3 PT % for his 4 years at IU to backup my example.
  1. .243
  2. .227
  3. .301
  4. .471

I get it. You don't like to be yelled at.

Just like with Knight, an Izzo recruit knows what he's getting into. Coaches recruit a certain type of kid that will fit. It works, until it doesn't. Right now it's still working for Izzo. Eventually, it won't.

Yeah...but...Knight was just trying to get the best out of him by constantly screaming and demeaning him. Jeez!

I don't think the yelling approach is necessarily the best but it's effective with some players in some situations. What I take some issue with is stories like the linked that complain about a coach "yelling in a teen’s face" like the kid just graduated junior high. These "teens" are 18-19 years old. They are men.

Fife only played 2 years for Knight. His overall shooting percentage under Knight was
1. .450
2. .455
Under Davis
3. .374
4. .461

Fife didn't shoot many threes his first two years. Probably because he wasn't very good at it and the needs of the team were different.. He was a combined 14-59 those two years. He was 19-62 his first year under Davis. Very little difference. Maybe he just got better at shooting the three instead of the so called browbeating from Knight.

Also wasn't it pretty established that Knight did most of his yelling at upperclassmen/ leaders and not freshman.

You wouldn't get very far with that recruiting strategy.

Well, I do thing he's been kinda 'old man emotional' lately.

I don't think he's ever completely gotten over the 'scandal'.

But I agree this was nothing.

This is the correct response.

Trying to recruit a kid by showing him film on what some old nasty coach is doing to his players = certain fail.

Come on over to rafters victorbear. Your takes may not be celebrated over here, but you would be treated like a god with your negativity against iu over there. Plus you would be more welcomed there than here for sure bring your boy fpeaugh with you
