Grain of salt - I am not a trained economist.

But I have always believed that "consumer confidence" was THE ONE THING that mattered. As long as folks were earning/borrowing and buying/spending, things would be alright.

But the tariffs ... on the heels of Biden printing money/inflation .. have now apparently slowed spending by Bubba the buyer. "The common folk" are getting worried and hunkering down.

You economy experts - riddle me this:

How long will this downturn last?

Will the market "correct" more than 20%?

I'll hang up and worry.

Economist don’t like Trump‘s tariffs. You can read that anywhere from the WSJ to the far left.

One way to virtually guarantee Trump can be credited with a "recovery" is to burn the entire thing to the ground. And to do it as soon as possible so he can more easily blame others for it. Won't be anywhere else to go, but "up", here soon...I suppose.

Tariffs have a long history of producing negative outcomes for most people. Especially broad-based ones that carry no obvious strategic purpose. They're right up there with rent and price controls.

Anybody who does support them is a complete fool.

He's got to get tax cuts through or it's a double whammy.
People are already anxious about prices. I’m at the store now getting ready to pick up my minion from school. Shit is expensive. his dumbass better get out of that bubble and start focusing on prices

I'll take the opposite side of doom and gloom. The economy will be humming right along in 2026 and the market will end 2025 higher. Globally we added 16 trillion during the Covid hysteria and we're still going to run 1-2 trillion dollar deficits. This train isn't stopping.

Whew. The tariffs on their own are going to rock our world in ways most people don't fully appreciate. If they couple that with cutting people's take home pay, we could be in for a helluva show.

For the last few weeks the wife has been wearing a Canada hat on her trips to the grocery stores she hits. At WalMart, she usually will get compliments on the hat, apologies for what Trump is doing, and will strike up a conversation. People are figuring out that all the baked goods and produce in their carts come from Canada and Mexico, and this past weekend she saw people stocking up. Those are the ones who are clued in. Shit's going to hit the fan when the tariffs actually hit and the MAGAs see what actually happens.

That could happen.... If Trump backtracks on basically his entire economic strategy.

If Trump actually implements his proposals then expect max pain. It's the dumbest set of economic proposals since 1930. Stocks were already very valuation rich, so there's plenty of room down.

Everything they're doing is pro growth long term besides tariffs.

In the long term we're all dead. None of his other policies matter when you are overturning the entire order of world trade.

And what are his other policies anyway.... Extending current tax policy? You think dereg moves the needle when you are implementing a $1T consumption tax?

The President’s primary economic tool constitutionally speaking is tariffs. Ego Man doesn’t overthink anything. He wields his tariff hammer, sees only nails, and begins pounding.

[insert video of toddler pounding the shit out of everything in sight]

Make some predictions then. What you got?

Also, if they were able to raise a trillion dollars (they'll get nowhere close to it) from tariffs 80% of Americans wouldn't be paying income tax and numerous other taxes.

Predictions? Lol.. How can anyone make a prediction when we everyone is waiting on dear leader to dictate?

This entire thing is a debacle. A President should never be allowed to unilaterally tax

The Left has traditionally been all for tariffs, as much as the Right has loathed them - until 2016, when Trump proved tariffs are not necessarily a bad thing.

IIUC, tariffs are one of the few areas where the President has nearly unfettered power. Of course it makes perfect sense that that is where Trump would concentrate his policymaking.

If you can't make a prediction why do you have such a strong opinion on it being a debacle?

lol...they literally implemented tariffs during his Trump's Presidency and no world's were rocked. Also, they weren't inflationary either. The economy and stock market will be doing well by the time Trump leaves office. Assuming China doesn't release another virus.

Latest discussion is 20% across the board for every import, regardless of source country. How is that helping you?
Our competitors are already absurdly expensive. Our margins are massive and we can undercut the shit out of them. 20 percent to me I can bake in keep the same price and be fine.

They were about 5% the level he's boasting about doing now.

So you make less money. And keep the production in the same place. That's a good policy in what possible way?
