Dustin Dopirak on potential IUBB coaching candidate pool shrinking

The discussion has been McCollum through the prism of Archie Miller. I think a different perspective might be in order.

In 2006, when we were searching for Mike Davis’ replacement, way down on the list was Gregg Marshall (a young Brad Brownell also was way down the list, I think Bloom may have brought more attention to him - or that was during the ‘08 search). Anyway here was Marshall’s record through 2006 (only at Winthrop).

Starting in 98-99:
21-8, 9-1 1st
21-9, 11-3 2nd
18-13, 11-3 2nd
19-12, 10-4 1st
20-10, 11-3 1st
16-12, 10-6 3rd
27-6, 15-1 1st
23-8, 13-3 1st

The book on Marshall, too big a jump, we are a blue blood, can’t take the risk.

29-5, 14-0 1st
Hired by Wichita St.
11-20, 4-14 9th

Now the book on Marshall during ‘08, he gets his hat handed to him in the MVC, we are a blue blood, can’t take the risk, not convinced he is that good.

17-17, 8-10
25-10, 12-6 2nd
29-8, 14-4 2nd
27-6, 16-2 1st
30-9, 12-6 2nd, Final Four (2012-13 ironically)
35-1, 18-0 1st,
30-5, 17-1 1st
26-9, 16-2 1st
31-5, 17-1 1st

We were in the market, now the story was behavior based (eventually played out to be true), but not a question on capability or readiness.

McCollum just finished a season that was better than all but one of Gregg Marshall’s based on regular season record. His D2 accomplishments are more than enough to correlate to Winthrop.

The mistake is not repeating Archie, it is not hiring Marshall in 06 or 08.

McCollum is Marshall 2.0, acumen without the baggage.

McCollum would not be getting traction without the Cigs hire which is a totally diffrent circumstance. Indiana football could take a chance Indiana basketball will be near dead if they hire a unproven first year d1 coach that fails.
Not with clueless fans that don't know basketball. Anyone with a BB IQ would be touting him for the job.

Yes- and no school in their right mind would put in a zero tolerance policy for a coach they just hired. The optics of that on the part of the university are horrible and no coach is signing up for that.

I’d tell them “You don’t trust me? Why hire me? Pound sand!”
The contracts cover bad acts. There doesn’t need to be zero tolerance clause. Did IU need a zero tolerance clause when Miller sexually harassed another man? No, they fired him.

The whole subject is mute. IU being IU isn’t even going to interview Beard or Wade who are the two best options for IU.

They won't get interviewed because one was arrested in a drunken fight with his fiance and they other was a target in an FBI sting. They DQd themselves.

Why be so hard headed? Don't blame IU for the shortcomings of 2 people you don't even know.

Near dead?? So they are just going to shutter the program and call it a day if McCollum is the next coach and is not successful?
Really??

Some people want a fast-paced offense like Crean's.

Totally disagree. I’m not listening to what others think/say, I’m doing my own research, watching his players/games, and listening to his interviews and his coaching thoughts. Try some of it and you might think otherwise.

I'll admit that, at times, Drake games can be a bit on the slow side. Fair criticism. When the clock strikes 00:00, though ........... WIN.

Being one of the lucky ones to experience many great RMK teams, everything since in my opinion has had IU basketball “near dead”.

But it’s more fun to watch your team score 90+ and lose in the last few minutes. (Sarcasm) A good coach will teach his players to take advantage of what the other team offers… And as GT said.. WIN!

Although I think Crean did a lot of good things in his first 6-7 years, there were two primary criticisms: 1. At times his teams played too fast, and 2. Defense wasn't prioritized like offense.

Actually, you know what? F*** it. Dolson should hire Paul Westhead of 90s LMU fame. You want a snazzy offense? Well there ya go.

(Note: If he's no longer with us, my condolences. I didn't bother to check.)

I thought Crean was a pretty good coach also. He has his players working together for the most part.

Your one of the few that support him. I never would hire a guy with one year experience to take over my company. You do realize they were 28-7 under the former coach he built the program to a 150-55 .732 over his 6 seasons

McCollum is a one hit wonder at Drake took over for DeVries who built Drake to a 150-55 team .732 in a years they were 28-7 last season. McCollum has the slowest tempo in the NCAA no thanks. Watching Archie's offense and Woodsons the last 8 years why in the hell would you hire a guy that has a slower pace offense and adjusted offensive efficiency of 77th Indiana is 66th. There adjusted defensive efficiency is 47th Indiana is better at 44th maybe we should keep Woodson lol. Also they don't shoot alot of threes they rank #338 at 18.3 3point attempts a game against Indiana shoots more 19.9 per game ranking 290th.

Debate:

1.) Many of the D2 coaches who have won a national championship have won more than 1.
2.) Other than Bruce Pearl, John Chaney, and Bo Ryan(D3) name a championship winning D2 coach who has also excelled at D1.
3.) Drake has one of the 10 best players in the country. It makes McCollum look good.

What they were last year is irrelevant since this is an entirely new team.
He brought players with him so he is 30-3 with basically a team full of D2 players.

Other coaches seek him out for his knowledge.

Shaka Smart who several on here championed for the IU job said if he was an AD, he would hire him tomorrow.

If he came here and was 30-3, I don't care what kind of offense he runs!
Why do you?

1. Only one has one four and I believe through a quick scan only one has won three

2. The idea there are three that have been very successful seems to eliminate this criteria as a disqualifier.

3. Good players make all coaches better. Given IU’s NIL and the ability to attract good players, good to see that he knows how to maximize their performance along with team success. His track record prior to that demonstrates he wins regardless of he has a top 10 talented players. Pearl won his D2 title with the national D2 player of the year, I do t believe that lessens the achievement or how it projected his future coaching success.

I believe McCollum is one of the coaches that would beat you with their players and beat you with your players. I believed the same about Marshall. Regardless of leevel stringing a ton of 1st/2nd place finishes in any conference is an achievement, talent is relatively balanced especially over time, so the differentiator tends to be the coach.

Archie is married to a smoke show and was harassing men? 😏
