I know they've been working on self-driving cars for a long time but I still have a hard time believing that we'll ever have completely self-driving cars that you can set a desination and it will get you there without human intervention. Maybe I don't know exactly what they are talking about when they say completely self-driving because with all the construction on roads there are times when they don't mark things well and even humans get confused on what they are supposed to do. I know a lot of people think it's a good step forward but I've always been the type of person that if I'm in the car I just as soon be driving rather than sitting there like a bump on a log. I've never been able to read or play on the phone a lot when riding because it starts making me feel nauseous if I look at a book or phone too long.

We were driving to a cheer event in the wifeys car, its a Genesis. So I hit the cruise control and after a short period of time realized the car was driving itself. If I approached a slower car it would slow down to a certain distance to the car in front of me. It stayed in between the lanes and even when I went around curves. I started testing it and yup it was driving itself and had to tell me to put my hands back on the wheel after periods of time. Its crazy. I think they could easily have a lane on freeways for that like a carpool lane and they could figure out ways to prevent other drivers without the service to not have access. Personally I like driving as long as I'm moving.

My bride refuses to use cruise control and she stops late, causing me to brace myself whenever she comes to a stop light or sign or a vehicle in front. (“Will you stop that?”) I can’t tell her she’s a terrible driver and raises my blood pressure whenever I ride in her car.

I’d feel as unsafe in a self-driving car. Like you, I have to be in control. Also the reason I detest flying, in addition to no leg room.

So, I hope self-driving cars never become “a thing.”

What should make you wary is self-driving OTR semis.

A lot of cars have the adaptive cruise control so they slow down when approaching another car. I love that because you don't have to disengage the cruise control. Both of ours also have lane control to a certain degree but it's looking at the lines on the road. I do not like it because it's all time jerking you one way or the other.

I think a lot of drivers don't have good depth perception so they all of a sudden realize they are getting close and slam on the brakes. My wife sorta does the same thing as yours but I do 99% of the driving when we're together because she's so tiny that she sits right up against the steering wheel so I don't want her to drive.

Yes, I figured out you can adjust the footage to the back of the other car too. Anyways, I hated it because I'm like why am I going so slow. I always disengage the cruise. I hate the jerking too btw. I drive too fast on road trips. I bought an Escort Max a couple years back and its prolly one of the best investments I have ever made.

I love the adaptive cruise control because I get stuck in the right lane behind a slower moving vehicle and can't get into the left lane but I don't have to do anything except wait until I can get over to pass and the car picks back up to the speed I had it set to.

I'm with you, I'd still feel better if I were flying the plane I think.

As for the actual driving its a heartbeat of hacking from an absolute disaster. Assists are one thing but total control no way. What happens in really bad weather?

I hate adaptive cruise. First, I can drive just fine. But more annoying, you look down and you’re going 15 mph below the speed limit because the cruise doesn’t re adapt. It’s so incredibly annoying to me.

Mine adapts just fine... If I come up behind a car is slows down to the speed of the car it's following but when I get over into a clear lane it goes back to the cruising speed that I have set.
