I was reading a thread on an old forum about Civilization 6, a strategy game that is notorious for long turn times. That is to say, in the late game, as it gets more complex, when you hit "next turn," it takes several minutes for the AI to go through all the AI player turns and get back to you. Several posters mentioned that they always had a second activity to keep themselves occupied while waiting for this to happen.

Anyway, the game doesn't matter. What I realized is that at some point, I began doing the same thing. Right now, from my couch, I can watch the TV (which I am doing), but I also have within reach a laptop, phone and hardcover book, all available to occupy myself during commercials. I further realized that this is pretty normal for me, now. If I'm lying in bed with a book, it might have my full attention, but if I'm in the living room, I almost always have multiple things going on at the same time. I don't watch TV without a book next to me. I don't play a video game without the TV turned to an interesting background channel.

Anyone else?

I'm always sitting at my computer with the TV on across the room. Closest I come to actual multitasking is when I live chat while watching IU football and basketball.

Oh absolutely. I generally have phone, book or magazine and tv on. But then often I’ve found I’ve missed the whole plot of the show. It’s why I still enjoy going to the movie theater becausd I can’t multi leisure there. I’ll also stop every 20 to 30 minutes to pop up and do something in the house.

Often if I am reading or cruising the internet, I pretend I’m listening to my stoker. Does that count?

Yes, especially in things like Civ, but pretty much anything. Pretty much this place is a go to distraction.while waiting on a computer, a commercial, or a red light (just kidding on that one).

Now I know you sit on the john and read or play with phone... don't deny it. :) :)

I just did four miles on the treadmill; while reading a book(Kindle-size adjustable font) and listening to Pandora.

My problem is the phone. Commercial comes on and, if I don't change the channel b/c of my hatred for commercials, I pick up the phone. Streaming services have largely killed commercials so that's getting to be less and less.

When reading though I can't have the TV on. Which isn't a problem, b/c i'm reading. I play a lot of backgammon with the kid and the TV is always on, unless it's for money then I make her concentrate.
