Dix to creighton

Is it time to start asking if there are some issues endemic to IU basketball that are putting us at a disadvantage with players regardless of who the coach is? I’ve never bought into that in the past and been “that guy” but I’m slowly starting to become “that guy”.

BTW, along these lines, companies devote a good deal of money and effort to understanding why somebody in their target market chooses to buy their products or a competing product.

To the degree it's possible, it would be helpful for IU to make a good faith effort to understand why players we targeted went elsewhere. Obviously, they can't reach out and talk to another program's players. But they can talk to others involved in coaching and recruiting and take an honest assessment of why we seem to be spinning our wheels.

You can't fix a problem until you fully understand what that problem is. I bet they'd find some common themes in the answers they'd get back.

Maybe. But don't forget that, last season, most people thought we hit a home run in the portal.

And our guys all watched the tournament in their dorm rooms.
Agree, and going forward we will see that this basketball landscape is more than just putting together perceived talent but coaching and chemistry together.

Everyone keeps comparing it to May last year. Theres a big difference all the top players were still there in the middle of April. This yr kids are signing quickly and most of the top 20 are gone! So yeah if want a team of 2 and 3 stars your fine. And maybe they will mesh and succeed. But guards with talent wins in college period!
About the “top 20.” You had previously posted the list below. I noticed how many good players were not in the top 20 and many good B1G teams didn’t have a top 20 player, such as MSU, UofM, Maryland, Oregon, and Illinois, for example. I bolded some players of note. Also, check out “Others of Note” that you made mention of. Tonje was 296!

And as ive said how many of those teams were in the final four? Or elite 8. 2 in the elite 8 1 with a legendary coach the other(michigan) finished 10th in portal rankings. I understand the apathy ive been an IU fan for 50 yrs. Dont we want to be better than those teams. Shouldnt IU basketball mean more than Michigan basketball. If you want top 5 B10 and first and second round losses every year fine we are right on track. I want IU to be IU again and actually mean something. Competing for B10 title every year and be a top 15 team

And more and more coaches will be telling kids on their visits that they don't want to commit to IU, they only have three players on the roster.
And DeVries will sell playing time. Let it play out. We have no idea what next year's roster will look like.

This year’s FF does not include even 1 team with a player in the top 20 of last year’s portal rankings: https://247sports.com/season/2024-basketball/transferportaltop/

Only 2 EE teams had a top 20 player, Alabama and Tennessee.

Once again compare apples to apples. The 4 teams in the final four combined brought in less transfers total then we need to fill out a roster. Those teams were already built just 1 or 2 pieces away. You think we are 2 pieces away from competing for a final four?

Not even sure they will be able to fill out a roster honestly. I think first year expectations are not going to be very high even with the 10 million.

So far I think he has five players to our three. The whole point of picking DD was had experience navigating the portal at least that is what Dolson said. I think I will lose it if DD fails knowing we could of had May last year. And the 1 for 3 is a guy he has already coached so probably not too hard to close.
May didn't sign his portal roster last year until mid April thereafter, dipshit.

The 2023 portal rankings also do not include even 1 player from the top 20 list on any of this year’s FF teams. You have to go back to 2022 to find 1 player from the top 20 on any of the FF teams, Johni Broome at 13.

The concern is that with the number of (current) “top 20” players dwindling, there won’t enough good players to construct a good roster. I’m just taking note that there are typically many good players who are not ranked in the top 20.

Dorm rooms? That's very quaint. These guys live in top-end luxury apartments. No dorms or Walnut Knolls for them
If I’m making hundreds of thousands while playing in Bloomington, I’m buying houses. Live in one, rent the rest…then rent the one I’m living in once I leave. Rent in Bloomington is f*****g ridiculous. 25 years ago I lived in a shitty studio apartment there and paid $335/month. That same shitty apartment goes for about a grand now.

Which is what, exactly though? I’d like to see it actually defined…

A few thoughts off the top of my head.

- We have a high tolerance for mediocrity. We’ve hung on to unsuccessful coaches too long.

- We still maintain ideals espoused by Coach Knight that, frankly, had already left the high echelons of the game by the tail end of his time here. College BB has become a minor league for the NBA whether we like it or not.

- We live on past glory more than we ought to. It’s been almost 40 years since we won a title. We’d do better to view ourselves as an ambitious upstart than a former blueblood. Feel hungry, not entitled.

- And we need to stop having the attitude that we’re not a good cultural fit for coaches with baggage. According to Goodman, Chris Beard didn’t even merit consideration. Bruce Pearl apparently never has.

Why? Well, I’d say it’s because we view ourselves as being above all that.

I’m not saying we have to go hire one of them to exorcise these demons. It’s more about what it says about our commitment to success. It suggests that it’s secondary - but I bet that the PTBs would scoff at that and say that we can win, we just have to do it “the right way.”

I bet you’d be hard pressed to find anybody in the Auburn community who regrets their decision to hire Pearl. And that is why they’re in the FF again, and we’re in the process of replacing yet another unsuccessful coach.

It's comical we still have the holier than thou attitude while there are basically zero rules of any kind anymore in the ncaa. I bet half these guys don't even go to class. But we certainly won't touch a coach with even a minor skelton. I mean nobody should be surprise in our lack of success. It's all self inflicted.

The problem doesn’t stop there. There are still people who view the program as a blueblood. But the reality is we’re competing for 2nd best program in the state, not 1st.

But back in the spring of 2002, that view was more realistic. And what do the people entrusted with the program do? Hire a guy who had never been a HC at any level. And then hang onto him well after it was evident they screwed up and he was in over his head. Compare that to Gillispie at UK or Doherty at UNC. They’d never have hired a rookie coach, and didn’t tolerate mediocre results with those they did hire.

The Davis debacle is water way under the bridge now. But IMO, some of the same dynamics still exist which led to that.

It was clear to me after Archie’s 2nd year that he wasn’t the guy. But people said he needed more time. OK, but does only having 2 years explain why his teams seemed to regress over the course of a season? But, sure, OK give him a 3rd year. But why a 4th? Was it just money limitations? If so, write better contracts. Or did they really need more time to see that he wasn’t up to the task?

And, speaking of contracts, one side effect of the Xfer portal to me is that schools shouldn’t feel as compelled to offer contract lengths as long as they used to. Crean had to build a team from scratch without it - and with recruiting sanctions he didn’t create. I had no issues at all with his first teams struggling as they did.

But that era is now gone.

Woodson getting a 4th year was absurd, especially in the nil era. There is no doubt that moronic decision cost us May. I believe Utah even fired their coach after three years. This getting a 4th year crap is just typical iu stupidity.

Time to scour the Hyper I guess. We need like 10-12 more guys. I suppose we may have a roster full of 2-3 star portal players
In my era on campus there were some dudes who could really play on court 1 at the hyper. Always wondered if there were some under the radar guys that could compete at the B10 level. In this era, it may be tough to fill out a roster when everyone demands to be a starter or significant minutes. Walk-ons may take an even more valuable role. Gotta practice vs someone who pushes you.
Anyone remember wailing Will Wyman (sp?)?

Bailey, I like many others obviously like Beard also (I know you were a proponent of Beard). It’s not happening, it’s over. Please quit saying such BS crap that Coach DeVries “Will not be able to fill out a roster”. Unless you enjoy making yourself sound stupid (but maybe your just ignorant), just stop.

Leal maybe did that. Most of the kids won’t care, they just want a nice crib and an Escalade to drive to practice
