Dix to creighton

Everyone keeps comparing it to May last year. Theres a big difference all the top players were still there in the middle of April. This yr kids are signing quickly and most of the top 20 are gone! So yeah if want a team of 2 and 3 stars your fine. And maybe they will mesh and succeed. But guards with talent wins in college period!

And more and more coaches will be telling kids on their visits that they don't want to commit to IU, they only have three players on the roster.

This year is way different. These guys are declaring and committing in like two or three days this year. the Michigan guard committed in like two days. Like you said most are already gone. We will field a team but it’s likely we will have to overpay for two and three star players. A bigger concern to me is he had not even really landed anyone. I don't count his own son as landing someone and Connor was a guy who he had already coached.

We don’t know who the “top 20” will eventually be. More to the point, we don’t who will be available going forward or when they will be available.

Coach DD will do way more with what he gets than Woody ever did. You only need a solid 7 guys. He was an early hire also.

I agree with this also. But are we trying to make sweet 16s and final fours or are we happy to finish top 5 in B10 and just do better than woodson. This is IU i thought we wanted that to mean something again!

I agree, have been to the last 2 final 4s and was at school for the last championship but the program is a wreck now. Will take some time.

Thats the point with the portal it doesnt have to take that much time. Look at michigan or even our own fb program. But we have to land some kids some top guards. Its to quite. No information on visits or anything. Need to create some buzz like Cig did.

Next week will be key. If Woody would not have talked TJD into staying this would all be different.

So far there is no buzz and people wanted that with the new hire. It needs to happen and happen soon.

Any color on the change in heart that we had in timing related to announcing the new staff? I first heard we weren’t going to make an announcement until everyone was finalized. That changed. Was that change because players were committing quicker than we thought, and we needed to pivot?

I don't think the lack of announcements, as dumb as that was, is the problem. The recruits would be told who had been retained and who they hoped would be retained. The problem is not having an intact staff.

I just looked and 16 of the top 20 portal guys are already taken. Its been three weeks and like you said we still do not have full staff.

Well we have three and if goode gets a fifth year we have our four! LOL!

You need one more, coach. Coach Norman Dale: My team's on the floor!

Josh's mother has cancer. I do not know the immediate severity and don't care to pry on that but obviously, cancer is very serious. He is from a suburb of Omaha and his family still lives there. That is why Creighton was the immediate favorite to land his services. There were a LOT of rumors that Josh Dix did not want to play with Owen Freeman (another Iowa transfer) again and that Creighton would not be able to land them both. Freeman committed to Creighton and it was thought to be a battle between Illinois-IU and a return to Iowa. Committing to Creighton would have been expected a few days ago but it was a surprise for that to be the choice this morning. Best of luck to him and I hope being close to his mother is good for the whole family.

For IU, the search for roster additions carries on. Tucker DeVries-Conor Enright-Trent Sisley remains the extent of the rebuild as of this morning. That is perfectly fine and there is no need to panic yet. IU still has a whole lot to get accomplished (including still finalizing a staff) and things will need to pick up substantially over the next several days.
He's making the best decision for him

Is it time to start asking if there are some issues endemic to IU basketball that are putting us at a disadvantage with players regardless of who the coach is? I’ve never bought into that in the past and been “that guy” but I’m slowly starting to become “that guy”.
I alluded to it several weeks ago. “Indiana” isn’t the sexy name it was 30 years ago with these players. Only their still cognizant grandfathers recall our glory years. Who amongst us remains as sexy today as you were 30 years ago? Not me. Not my wife. The testosterone well runs dry if dipped down into too many times.

Those coaches must be in a bad spot if they have to bring up any another school in their conversation with recruits.

They all know what other schools the recruit is visiting. You think they don't try to steer them away, or at least make a pitch for why their opportunity is better?

Maybe just snap your fingers
Didnt say it was easy! But you have to have a coach that can recruit and has good x's and o's. Crean could recruit high school but not good with x's and o's. Archie was decent recruiter and good defensive coach but no offense. Woodson could recruit the portal(horrible with high school kids) but no x's and o's. We have yet to see what CDD can do. But portal so far has not been good. We will have to wait and see about the x's and o's. Not to mention zero buzz around the program.

If McCollum has a better roster then DeVries I think I will lose it. Obviously DeVries has a hard time closing the deal he let everyone walk and is 1 for 3 so far in the portal with a huge money bag.

BUZZZZ. There you have it

So far I think he has five players to our three. The whole point of picking DD was had experience navigating the portal at least that is what Dolson said. I think I will lose it if DD fails knowing we could of had May last year. And the 1 for 3 is a guy he has already coached so probably not too hard to close.

I'm certainly not going to sit here and cast any judgment on the DeVries hire until we get some actual data regarding Ws and Ls. And, even then, I'm fine with giving him the time to succeed.

Who's going where in the transfer portal in the first month since he's been hired is not the same things as Ws and Ls. I understand why many people have become impatient. The program's been in a bad place for a long time and we're all pretty worn down by that. We've been plenty patient. We're still here hoping, wishing, and discussing after all.

However....I don't have a problem being "that guy." The answer to your question is Yes, we have a cultural problem (internally). And I think that's morphed into a perception problem (externally).

Hopefully Darian DeVries is finally the right guy to fix it. He's not who I'd have gone after if I was Scott Dolson. But he's the guy we got -- so I'm 100% with him. If it's true we have this perception problem, then it's unfair to expect him to have that changed immediately.

But there probably were candidates available who could have done that. Unfortunately, part of our cultural problem is that the people who make decisions won't tolerate somebody like that. So they keep trying to fix it with more conventional leadership.

IU will get a bunch of mediocre players from the portal. Most of the difference makers are gone or not considering IU

Maybe. But don't forget that, last season, most people thought we hit a home run in the portal.

And our guys all watched the tournament in their dorm rooms.
