Did Cignetti's Words Fire Up OSU?

With losses by Colorado, Mississippi, Alabama and BYU, it looks like Indiana will still make the twelve team NCAA football playoffs unless they stumble badly against Purdue. But I hope that Coach Cignetti learned a valuable lesson. You never say that any opponent sucks and you especially don't do that if your opponent is OSU. I have never heard of better bulletin board material than that if you are OSU. The only good thing about yesterday is that OSU now considers IU a worthy opponent but Cignetti needs to eat some humble pie and just shut up.

If true, it’s amazing and suggests Day knows IU is a very different program than past years. Look forward to playing OSU again in 2 years in Bloomington.

Personally, give me a coach who thinks he can go out and beat everyone in the country.

That kind of bravado trickles down and players feed off of that confidence.

It's a nice change of pace.

Get a grip, he’s trying to change our culture, which is a tough job. It might make you a little uncomfortable, but he’s earned the benefit of the doubt on his approach.

After those early statements and pressers, almost all of his statements since have been typical matter of fact coach speak.

Like you, I’m generally not big on coaches shooting off their mouths, but I don’t have an issue with it here. Cignetti has already explained that he made this (and other) bold statement early in his tenure in an attempt to fire up a downtrodden and indifferent fan base, and to generate interest in the program. It worked and, damn, with the exception of yesterday’s result, he’s been able to back up the brash talk.

OSU’s final series yesterday may have sent a message, but Cignetti’s comments last winter had nothing to do with yesterday’s special teams fvck-ups, falling behind, and State teeing off on a QB they knew was going to throw.

Beat Purdue!

Who cares if it fired them up. They are already a friggin pro team with a cartoonish Hollywood Hogan looking heel for a coach and a frigging former NFL coach running their offense.

They have been running a semi-pro team out there against us for 30 years. They can take a little name calling.

Their fans suck too. Or at least the ones who show up to IU games suck. Pain in the ass.

Will Howard had his fun. Whatever. Get em next time.

**** Ohio State. I am glad we have a coach that isn't coming in prostrating before them or anyone else in this conference. I want a guy who believes he is going to come in and knock them down a few pegs and frankly this program needs someone who believes that enough to put himself on the line like that. We have been a loser program showing teams like that deference for decades and it got us nowhere.

The opposite side of this is OSUs reaction after beating us. Now Cig has some bulletin board material for the rest of this season and next year's matchup.....in Bloomington.

I will be honest, ar the point I knew it was over I stopped watching. What did they do?

Take a pick. OSU got in victory formation when Indiana wasn't calling timeouts w/35 seconds left and the ball inside our 2 yard line. Then they QB snuck it in with that formation. Ryan Day was asked why and he said "we needed to make a statement."

Will Howard said, "google this" then pretended to take a puff of a Cig, throw it on the ground and stomp it out.

Gotcha. Yeah, that is why I am kind of at **** Ohio State person. Any team going into victory formation and then running a real play off it is Bush league. The only statement he made is that he is a sore loser bitch.

We can't have it both ways.

We be all in for a coach who makes all these statements about this team sucka and that team sucks and then cry about a team scoring on us in the final minute of a game that we had every opportunity to stop.

Loser mentality.

Indiana's focus should be very simple; focus on doing whatever it takes to build and beat Ohio State the next time they appear on the schedule. That plan requires a major boost in NIL and renovations.

Cignetti has positioned the program to do just that. With a CFP spot on the horizon, you MUST strike while the iron is hot. Drum up NIL while momentum is high and carry over into next year!!

As for what he said about Ohio State sucking, they do suck.

So they were more taking shots at CCC and not the team/players per se.

In Day’s post game presser he was talking about the great defensive game plan they had but followed up with “at the end of the day the game is played by players, not coaches.” Which I took as another shot at CCC

No, OSU had 8 guys who could be in the NFL now, come back for 3 goals. 1. To beat Michigan 2. To win the Big Ten 3. Win a National Title. The end of the game was a shot at IU but the beating was focus on a goal that without a victory over IU they wouldn’t have been able to achieve. It was more about the narrative that Day and OSU can’t win top 5 matchups or that he’s a terrible coach. The guy was literally a missed targeting call on MHjr or missed FG vs Georgia from a NC.

Look, I hope this becomes a rivalry! Is Day is dick? Maybe but Cig is too. I’m 32 and my entire life, Hell… My father’s entire life, OSU has been a national title contender. To become a rival means you are their equal.

BTW, Day's approach at the end of yesterday's game is exactly why I typically root against the Big Ten. If he can't circle our wagons, don't expect me to circle theirs...

Say what you want about the SEC, but I think they definitely take a knee so their conference brother doesn't get knocked out of the CFP.

That little stunt will be talked about 30 years from now in Indiana football circles, count on it.

What are you talking about?

We can't complain because they came out in a certain formation and didn't run what we thought they were going to run because that's what other people do.

That's not how this is done.

We've scored late touchdowns that didn't matter in games and people haven't said a peep but because this was against us, it's now a big deal.

Did they actually get in victory formation and run a real play though? Like if I am IU I am drilling their QB and taking a penalty the next time they line up like that and if Ohio State complains I point back to this game. I don't trust you to be a good sport so I am not going to be one.

Yeah, when it comes to Ohio State there has never been conference loyalty. Ever. As long as they get theirs. And they will be the ones leading the charge to break up how revenue is shared as well. They are easy to root against.

CFB is a nasty, nasty zero sum game. Being nice doesn’t work at all like you said, the other team will just take advantage.

Yep. They had their laughs. I hope we make them eat them in 2 years. They have good players and win games but everything else about Ohio State sucks. (Which I know they don't care about because wins matter, just like to see them get knocked down several pegs.)

Btw Cig said Michigan sucks. We still won that one despite the supposedly best bulletin board material ever we gave them.

This stuff gets overblown.

The only bulletin board material that hurt IU is the bulletin board in the NFL offices that shows OSU has NINE potential 1st or 2nd rounders in the 2025 draft and more guys in the 2026 draft.

I'm fine with Coach Cig saying Ohio State sucks because he explained it perfectly. Imagine finally getting a shot to coach in one of the top conferences in the NCAA, arrive at the school, and then get asked a million times how you possibly think you can win at INDIANA? That had to bristle him up and yes we can all say, "well, he should have just taken it and kept his mouth shuts" but that is exactly what most of the other IU Coaches would have done and perhaps why IU has never been 10-0 in the past. Not the words, but the shut up and take your medicine IU mentality. Cig had had enough and he wanted to make a statement that IU under his watch would take a backseat to nobody. So, OSU got to give their rebuttal yesterday . . . fine, even if their style of rebuttal was classless.

At season's end the fact remains, IU football is far and away better than ever and OSU is one more loss to Mich away from calling for their coaches head. Hell, if they lose a second time to Oregon hell will feeze over in Columbus. Meanwhile, I'm still pinching myself wondering where IU will play in the post-season. Go HOOSIERS, beat Purdue because . . . Purdue SUCKS !!!

Almost certainly. And those words will fire up PU, too. That's not the sum of it though. The question is what it did for IU fans. This year has been validation for me and I believe that will hold true in the future.

You're complaining that they didn't take a knee in victory formation and scored. Who cares? Football is entertainment... ask our own coach.
Again, no one is complaining.......still. I'm saying it's bulletin board material. Go re-read what I said because either you didn't read it or you're lacking reading comprehension. I was defending Cigs statements and said getting the rise out of OSU gives us bulletin board material going forward. Life must be hard for you.

Life is good.

If I misread what you implied, I'm sorry. I highly doubt Cig needs those things as bulletin board material for next year. The score board should be enough.

He has said multiple times, what he said was not planned. He had spent his first day in the department and got the big vibe that the feelings about IU football was so negative within the department and around fans, he said what he said. After one day of being at IU he found out just how negative the whole situation was and that was his way of starting the culture change.

I doubt, no I know ... what he said had NOTHING to do with how and why OSU blitzed them on passing situation. It had nothing to do with IU's punter dropping the ball or missing tackles on the OSU TD runback. Sure the OSU players had fun with what he said but it had very little factor in the game.

Have you ever played football at any level higher than the pee-wee league?

But it was okay for you when Knight brought Jack the Donkey on his show to make an ass out of Purdue, right?

C’mon.
Context here. He said this stuff at a basketball game to rile up a crowd. He knows both of those programs and their tradition. He doesn’t truly think this.

IU has tried the “gentleman’s approach” before and all of this LEO. shit and welcoming in opponents like rolling out the red carpet. That’s not sports. Sports is all about being nasty and disliked. The game has changed. Like it or not, society now thrives in trash talk and social media taunts. Got to play the game the way it’s played now.
