Dakich Nailed It on the Head

Still learning the lay of the land?
Its year 3, I thought was $3.5mil, and Archie has his brother and his uncle/cousin Cal to go to early on for advice...

Its getting too late in the game for this crap...

I can’t believe he hasn’t improved his asst coaching staff...though maybe the pool of possible asst coaches is feeling the same as the pool of possible recruits abt committing to Archie.

'lay of the land' is a pretty ambiguous phrase. No real content to what he was referring. Dan's ratings must be sagging during the off season.

Next year will be the critical season. Another dud and we'll see "back up the Brinks truck in Brad Stevens' driveway" posts every day.
That may happen after a three-game skid...I doubt he’ll survive 7 straight or 11/12...

Are you talking this coming year, or next? Recruiting is only getting worse with every loss, he might get a 4th year but he'll essentially be a lame duck coach. It shouldn't take a coach (at IU of all places) 4 years to make the damn 68 team tournament.

Recruiting has really seemed to fall off a cliff. We cannot even get a bloomington native to verbal yet. If the 2021 class is not a top 15 class and we miss the tourney again I think he is likely out.

You don’t think IU will make the tournament, I have standing bet for all comers that IU will make the tournament. Want to take it? Just let me know and we can settle up at the end of the season.

this coming season . 20 wins, .667+ winning percentage, top half B1G and NCAA tourney. If we're talking our NIT chances in late Feb then the program is in deep trouble....again.

I'll admit, aside from Brunk, recruiting news since the season's end has been very concerning. Even the hometown Leal kid, who everyone thought would accept the offer on site during the home visit, is taking his time. Starting to believe that recruits are questioning CAM's status long term. Other coaches have to be using that as ammo.

Huh? Where in my post did I predict IU to miss the tournament? I was just saying that Archie needs to make it this year or we should look in another direction.

I expect them to make the tournament this year, if not some changes need to be made. This program has been a joke for far too long.

Guess I misread your post. No one has taken the bet, and that includes the people that have specifically said IU won’t make the tournament.

Arch(ie) will get at least four years, even if Year 3 is a repeat of Year 2. The standards at IU aren’t in conflict with the current or likely future results .

You have no idea if he will get four years unless you are somehow connected with the IU administration and have been told this. If next season is a disaster and recruiting is dead giving him a fourth year will simply make him a dead man walking.

The fact Leal has not verballed yet is concerning.

Do people really forget how far the program fell in the last 20 years? Instant fixes rarely work out for major problems and we had a roster with no PG, no shooters, and a ton of wings. It isn't really that difficult to explain. I'll happily take getting the majority of the best in state players while we retool. As far as comparing it to last year. We should be starting two player 6'10 plus with only one not yet having B10 body vs starting 6'8 and 6'7 with only one having a B10 body. If you don't think skilled big guys make a big difference on both ends of the court (including giving guards more open looks), you know nothing about the game. Add to that our PG no longer being a freshman. If you can't see positive momentum, it's because you don't want to.

Why? It's only been 1.5 months. Maybe he wants to take advantage of official visits. I'm guessing you were part of the crowd who thought he'd accept the offer on the spot.
Which schools have made offer to Leal?
Stanford, Northwestern, Iowa, Maryland, Butler, Xavier are a few. I know Virginia has shown interest but I'm not sure if they've offered or not.

Fully expect them to make the tourney, but ultimatums without working in exceptions is flat out ridiculous. What if the entire starting lineup got hurt? We were exactly one win away from making the tourney last year when nothing went as expected (even the good start). I just don't think laying out an ultimatum with no concessions does not apply to real life unless one person can alone guarantee the success or failure. This team is still largely lead by Crean recruits (Davis, Green, Durham, etc). Now, after the next recruiting class and a chance to really put together the roster rather than being punished by the previous coaches failures, I could see an ultimatum. However, Archie, at this point, has been here just over 2 years. Show a little patience and give him time to work with his own recruits. That shouldn't be beyond reasonable...

Less than 20% of the top 100 in 2020 have committed, only 3 of the top 50 (used the 247 composite). I guess recruiting is falling off for just about everyone. I think we will see less and less kids committing early as they will wait longer to see what teams rosters are likely to look like after draft declarations and transfers. In the past there were not as many kids impacted by these 2 things, but now it becomes more of an issue and kids will wait to see who they will actually be playing with

If history and habit are reliable predictors, I have a very good idea that he’ll get four years, at least. Do some basic research and you’ll draw the same inescapable conclusion.

I'm saying if Leal & Galloway are all were worried about .Then were going to be bottom feeders..
Neither one of those kids are program buliders.

For those of you who think we should just cut bait on Archie after this past season or upcoming season, you may need to temper your expectations or open your checkbooks REALLY wide.

If IU wants to buyout his contract, IU would owe Miller 100-percent of his remaining salary before March 31, 2022 and 50-percent of his remaining salary any date after that.

Buyout as of 4/1/19: $17,000,000

Look at where things stand AFTER the season. It does absolutely no good for anyone to hawk him before the season. Last season is over. Let the team and coaches work and see what happens. At the end of the season we visit the subject because year 3 is reasonable to do that.

Have you seen our recruiting? Our roster right now will only get worse going forward, especially for a lame duck coach in his 4th year. I'll stick with my original statement, at IU it shouldn't take him 4 years to make the tournament.

I say this knowing he will likely get a 4th year regardless, but that's just because we have an AD who clearly doesn't know what he's doing.

I see a freshman class of two top 50 kids (TJD and Hunter, yes he's now part of this class remember) along with a top 100ish combo guard from the state.

We also added a 6'11" four star post that we have for two years who will be a fifth year player.

We actually have three of those guys...all four star recruits (Brunk, Race and Hunter).

Remember when we all bitched that we were perpetually young while Bo Ryan always seemed to have fifth year dudes...yeah we now have three, all four star recruits. Two being front court players. You remember the frontcourt right? The place where physical battles take place so it's best to be physically developed...maybe even have a physical advantage?

Spring recruiting is a free for all. Wake me up in September when we have a better idea who our current class is before we panic that recruiting is falling off a cliff.

He's just 2 for 2 on Mr. Basketballs and there's been a lot of Galloway CB action in the past couple days, after being a supposed ND lean.

Ummm Galloway is one of the heavy favorites for this year.

Nope I am part of the crowd now who thinks there is a real chance we may not get him.

Like I said he would be a dead man walking.

Right, because he didn't accept the offer on the spot as you previously thought he would. Which was my point.
He recently said he will wait until summer is over before deciding. My guess is Leal is a Hoosier by tomorrow night.
What in the world is going on with recruting. It is becoming clear that losing streak really is hurting recruiting in a bad way. This spring we have lost the following below recruiting battles. We got one transfer in Brunk but lost every other battle.

Harris
Brooks
Watford
Morton
Beverly
Quinones- likely gone
Leal still have not pulled the trigger. I was under the impression he was an IU lock?
I think we for sure get Leal and I wanted him more than Galloway anyway. I know Purdue is after him really hard also.
God forbid he actually wants to go through the recruiting experience. I get it, you expect instant gratification. Seriously, it's still early summer and he was offered only 1.5 months ago. I know it won't make you feel any better, but 247 still has him as 100% for IU.

I know dakich is pretty much hated here but I love the man and enjoy when he calls games. Especially uk games. He calls it like he sees it. He also knows changes have to be made at Indiana started with glass. He doesn’t hold anything back and he tells it like it is. He may still be bitter about not being the head coach, but he’s not s head coach. He’s a very good writer that doesn’t hold back. He may shit on Indiana a lot, but it’s because he doesn’t accept mediocrity or losing.

Dan Dakich calling games on TV != Dan Dakich the douchebag radio jockey. They are not the same person

I usually enjoy him doing games. He has a ton of basketball knowledge and first hand stories to share. That's all fine and well. However, on the radio and on Twitter, he just says shit to get a reaction. He and Brad Wells (Colts "writer") are the only 2 people I have ever blocked and built a filter for so I never have to see them in my timeline. It has nothing to do with being a fan or caring about anything. It has everything to do with clicks and listeners and reactions. Period.

Instant gratification with IU? LOL.
