Only active forum discussion I see regarding the coaching staff is on BTBs.

Here's what they are saying....Norton, Adams + Garrett Sturtz, who followed CDD from WV, in a Director of BOs type position.

Murphy has said no, but one poster still says IU is trying to hire him.

Not clear what the status is of Moikobu from TT. One poster says he's part of the staff, another says not. Of interest to IU fans is that Christian Anderson, a 6'2" PG and Darion Williams are in the portal from TT.

Rod Clark, an assistant from TENN, is being actively discussed. Said to be a lead recruiter type.

One poster said Chris Capko from SMU has been interviewed on IU campus.

I know nothing about any of this. Does anyone here know what's going on?

I don't know about them other two, but that one in the middle with the crazy hair and the bad breath; that's Willie Nelson!

Has nothing to do with this, but for some reason reminded me of that punchline. If you're over 45, you probably know the setup!

We know there will be five assistant coaches. We know Nick Norton and Drew Adams are two of the five. That leaves three spots remaining. We know Garrett Sturtz is working at IU but the assumption is that he is not going to be one of the five assistants. We believe Preston Murphy from Alabama was targeted, Alabama gave him a raise and one of their other assistants left to become a head coach so Murphy's role increased. I would assume he is staying at Alabama. We know IU pursued Achoki Moikobu of Texas Tech. Texas Tech reportedly offered a big raise to Moikobu and Trilly, this morning, posted on his burner that Moikobu would be staying at Texas Tech. Is that final? We do not know but it does feel that way.

Beyond that, I am pretty confident that current SMU Associate Head Coach Chris Capko will be one of the five and I believe he would be one of the three primary off-campus recruiters. That leaves two of five spots. I have not heard anyone else linked with the roles (beyond Murphy and Moikobu) but I am confident DeVries, a college basketball lifer, will have plenty of good ideas and options.

Bummer on AC and Murphy... but I'm sure there's a pretty long list of equally qualified guys. Wonder if Boopie Miller and/or BJ Edwards might consider following Capko "up" to IU? Both pretty athletic, 2 way perimeter players.

Any idea if Calbert will be a part of the staff?

How about Jordy?

Pretty weak staff, imo. It would seem that Capko would be the best of the bunch, were we to get him. USC had some nice classes while he was there.

Seems like there may have been friction with Frazier, who ended up taking an asst coach position at VT. Then Barnett got the job at Oral Roberts. He probably would have been a good get. Then we lost out on Murphy & Moikobu.

Does this look like a strong staff to you?

My understanding is that Calbert Cheaney and Jordan Hulls have both been offered roles in the athletic department but are not expected (barring a change) to be a part of the basketball staff.

Capko is very respected and he has been as Associate Head Coach at both USC and SMU (both power conference programs). He is from Florida, played at USF and has recruited on a national level with developed connections in California and Texas. He was a recent finalist for the South Florida head coaching job. I think he'd be a really nice hire (if it happens). Drew Adams is a really good hire and he has a ton of connections in the Midwest. That's a really good hire for IU and I think he'll do very well in Bloomington. Nick Norton is considered a sharp mind and player development guy. I won't make any type of comment on the quality of the staff when there have only been two guys actually hired. Once it is final and there are five assistants, I think it would be fair but even then, there would be a lot of unknowns about how it will play out. But, once there is a full staff, I'll do my best to evaluate it at that time!

Don't know your experience or background, but I'll take your word for it on Adams. Haven't heard great things in my circles... but that's mainly just regionally based high school, AAU stuff... Some guys now getting heavily involved in NIL initiatives..the Purdue guy I've mentioned also works directly with Miller at Cincy...he gave me the yikes emoji when it was announced.

I am sure he's not loved by everyone but I believe Drew Adams is a good evaluator, connected recruiter and hard-worker. The people I have talked to thought it made a ton of sense to hire him at IU and that he will open doors for Darian DeVries. Of course, I did not speak to everyone and the results (good or bad) will speak for themselves.

We have a poster named Cavanagh who has an interesting take on Drew Adams.

I cannot take credit for this…credit to Trilly (his Discord burner) on this information and take it as speculation but he did mention two new names as potential assistant coaches: Mike Bargen (Associate HC at Bradley and former head coach of Butler Community College in JUCO) and Kenny Johnson (currently at Georgetown). IU fans will remember Kenny Johnson from his time in Bloomington from 2012-2014. Very, very interesting.

Let’s hope for some more player development from this coaching staff. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Crean, but there was good player development with quite a few of his players.

I would love Kenny back in town. Big Kenny or Skinny Kenny? Drew Adams is not a hard worker....

He looked very robust on the sidelines with Georgetown this season. I don't agree with you on Drew Adams and that's fine. No need to argue about it...his connection with Reed Bailey was critical to get IU in the door for DeVries to land him last weekend. We'll see how it goes!

Any Georgetown guys in the portal besides Curtis Williams Jr?

I like your contributions Cav, but please tell me we don't have to endure you giving Adams the Romeo Treatment the next 4 years.
Time will tell. You realize I got Romeo exactly right. I predicted everything that would happened to him.

I would argue that any assistant coach that is decent at his job could get in the door with any player in the country at IU.

Hey I’m gonna think about giving you several million dollars want to talk to us?

Put it this way, if I were an assistant coach I promise I would be able to talk to any player I wanted to, and if we wanted them we would land them unless there was a higher bidder. I’d bet my left nut we were the highest bidder for Bailey.

I have no interest in betting for your left nut ha. Results will speak for themselves, one way or the other, on Drew Adams and we will all see how it plays out.

A lot of people saw what you did with Romeo, it's just that many of us hoped he'd buckle down and be able to fix his flaws with better coaching, vs hoping for the worst so we could take credit for being right. People do mature and change, and it's rewarding to see and I want to see IU guys succeed. I don't doubt that you are very good at your job, but I bet if I could go back to teen Cav, there would be people who wouldn't have described you as a dedicated hard worker who would be successful.

You obviously haven’t read the conversations of the D1 athletes it will eventually produce. Worth more than silver and gold on every continent on earth!

I have always been the best at what I do, so I disagree. I was the youngest manager ever at the IU telefund and raised more money than any other worker in my tenure. Then I became the biggest drunk on IUs campus. No1 could out drink me.

I get your point but you can normally tell who someone is and work ethic from a young age. Work ethic whether it be cheating to get recruits or calling alumni asking for money doesn’t really change with age.

well, we know that's not true, you already said you sucked at bball! You obviously have personal knowledge of the guy and probably a much better and correct judgement, but sometimes that can also blind you. There's a reason why sayings like "to close to the fire" or "can't see the forest for the trees" exist. My GF is very kind and patient and sees the best in everyone and she gave someone I thought had no chance of turning around every opportunity and the guy has totally flipped his life 180. Made me take a step back on judgement.

Everyone that knows Drew thinks he’s a dirtbag. If this was a me thing you for sure would have a point, because ya, I dig into opinions on people.

Drew and his dad have 100s if not thousands of people that feel very strongly that they are scum. I am not alone in this opinion. Super odd they would hire Drew, no reason to IMO. Tons of more qualified guys, and like I mentioned above with NIL, connections are meaningless. Just need a check book to talk with whoever you want.

And now there are three...Nick Norton, Drew Adams and Kenny Johnson. Two more assistants to go.

Johnson is a proven recruiter and I think his addition makes a lot of sense. I'll start trying to find out if he has any immediate connections with high school players or portal prospects that will pay quick dividends for the 2025 roster.

The 2 don't have to be mutually exclusive. He could be shady and still good at his job. CDD has to put a roster together and the Adams are mostly known for their connections, not their coaching, right? You need 10 new players, someone with connections would seem a value. The clock is ticking in this situation so someone who can get you past the gatekeepers is valuable. There's a reason headhunters still exist, when in theory with LinkedIn, any company pretty much has access to every candidate out there. The hire hasn't shocked any of the media or internet folks I've seen. If that's what he's here for, then he won't be here in a couple years most likely.

Kenny can talk and sell. Again, don’t need connections really, just need a phone number. Kenny has millions behind him now, we will talk to any player we want to.

The only answer I can think of, is Adams probably sold DeVries on his connections with the state of Indiana. There's no way of knowing this, right now, but I suspect becoming more closely involved with HS and AAU ball in the state is a priority for DeVries. If that's true, Adams is a name that probably would have come up early on as someone with ties to the state. I think there are probably many others, better suited, but maybe Adams talks a good game in an interview, and the references DeVries would have talked to gave positive reviews?

A low level assistant job, hopefully, isn't going to have a huge influence on our program and how most people view it. And if Drew does get us on some final lists, because of his ties, then he'll probably have been worth it.

As someone that has recruited before...Cav is most likely right... the IU logo on their golf shirts and pullovers will get every single recruit to listen to the elevator pitch, at a minimum... getting in to living rooms, final 5s, and landing them...that isn't as easy as handing the bag over (for most recruits). Hopefully Adams gets us past the elevator pitch for a bunch of kids.

With the portal, I think these connections are even more important now than they used to be. The bag is the closer for many, even most, but getting on and staying on a kid's radar by developing lasting impressions during the HS recruitment process (even if you miss) can give you a leg up if and when he hits the portal down the road.
