Everyone is aware that IU has not filled out the coaching staff yet. There is no need to panic (at all!) but it is worth pointing out and perhaps sparking some discussion about where things stand and where things may go. I do not think it is critical to have the staff finalized prior to the end of the dead period on April 10 but I do think it is probably at least slightly detrimental to have only two assistant coaches in place while nearly all of your competitors for players have full staffs with five assistants.

We know there will be five assistant coaches. We know Nick Norton and Drew Adams are two of the five. That leaves three spots remaining. We know Garrett Sturtz is working at IU but the assumption is that he is not going to be one of the five assistants. We believe Preston Murphy from Alabama was targeted, Alabama gave him a raise and one of their other assistants left to become a head coach so Murphy's role increased. I would assume he is staying at Alabama. We know IU pursued Achoki Moikobu of Texas Tech. Texas Tech reportedly offered a big raise to Moikobu and Trilly, this morning, posted on his burner that Moikobu would be staying at Texas Tech. Is that final? We do not know but it does feel that way.

Beyond that, I am pretty confident that current SMU Associate Head Coach Chris Capko will be one of the five and I believe he would be one of the three primary off-campus recruiters. That leaves two of five spots. I have not heard anyone else linked with the roles (beyond Murphy and Moikobu) but I am confident DeVries, a college basketball lifer, will have plenty of good ideas and options. If those two both are content to stay at their current roles with raises courtesy of the interest from IU...where might Darian DeVries turn? Obviously, this is an attempt at connecting dots and DeVries certainly would have more connections than just names that I am going to list here. Hopefully, this is interesting for you guys though!

Coaches that worked with DeVries at Creighton or Drake: Steve Lutz is now at Oklahoma State as a head coach, Alan Huss is the head coach at High Point and Marty Richter is the head coach at USC Upstate. Matt Woodley is an assistant at Wake Forest, Larry Blunt is at Oklahoma State and Matt Gatens was at Iowa but is currently not listed anywhere. I don't think any of those guys make sense. Corey Edwards is an interesting name though. He was an assistant at Drake and went to work for Alan Huss at High Point and has been listed as instrumental in the recruitment of a lot of the roster for back-to-back league champs and guard development at Drake with Conor Enright and Roman Penn. Edwards also worked at Monteverde and another prep school on the East Coast. Tom Ostrom previously worked for Darian DeVries at Drake and West Virginia and of course, he worked at IU previously and was generally well-liked. He was rumored to be going to Minnesota with Niko Medved but Medved hired three assistants and Ostrom was not one of them. Hmmm....

Assistant Coaches I Think Would Make Sense: Todd Abernethy - FAU (from Carmel), Rod Clark (Tennessee, only 28 years old, known as a recruiting ace)...I am sure there are many more. Anyone have any assistants from teams they follow or pay attention that might make sense?
