Cig Agrees to New Contract!

I am not questioning his coaching ability. When I see his recruiting, however, I see only one 4 star athlete and the rest 3 and 2 stars. Same paradigm as the past. When you have middle of the road recruits results are often the same.

Let's say your right and 10-0 isn't sustainable with those "middles of the road" players, I would be ecstatic with next year being 7-3 or 8-2 at this point of the season. IU isn't Alabama................ yet!

Also, wasn't CCC heavily involved with recruiting at Alabama? IIRC, Saban gave him credit with helping him early on at Alabama.

Yes, Cig was recruiting coordinator when they got the Julio Jones class that vaulted Alabama into the Natty a couple years later. He knows how to get the kids.

Where Cig is different is his focus on productivity. He gets guys that produce, not just any 2* or 3*.

With the transfer portal, he can execute this approach with precision. He can scour the JMU's of the world or MAC kids entering the portal looking for a larger platform.

The WR and RB group on this year's team showcases his strategy and how effective it can be....
 
Is it 9 million, or 8 million? Some articles say 8, "including a 1 million retention bonus", the others say 8, "plus a 1 million retention bonus" each year. Which would be 9 .

I assume some writers just don't know the english language. But I still dont know. How can an "average annual compensation be 8", but then have an extra million as well?

It's probably 8 per year, but there's a 1 mil bonus awarded if he's still the coach on some particular calendar day, likely well after the coaching carousel is usually done spinning (like, March or something).

I'm guessing here, but that kind of bonus seems designed to reward him for sticking around.

Hard to say without seeing the contract. Some buyout terms may be linked to the remaining AAV, or not. Might just want to encourage loyalty with the prospect of a mid-six figure check (after taxes) coming down the pike.

No, the negotiators wouldn't. The figures reflect anticipated damages if the other side breaches, which are driven by completely different concerns.

The cost for IU buying out Cig will be higher at the beginning of the contract, because he wants to incentivize IU to let him build his program over 3 or more years, and would want that commitment as a requirement to leave his successful and (relatively) high paying job at JMU.

The cost for Cig paying us to leave would usually be lower in an initial contract, because there isn't a lot of demand for our coaches at big time high major schools, so there wasn't a lot of fear that he'd get poached after one season, given our history and expectations this year.

Of course, we are having a once in a lifetime type season, so that fear went up quite a bit in the last 6 weeks, which drove the need to tear up a 6 year contract after about 11 months and redo the numbers.

For example, if we fired Cig yesterday, we'd owe him 20 million. But if he resigned yesterday, he'd owe us 8 million. Quite a big difference.

Toward the end of the contract the numbers get closer, but no one cares about the numbers at the end because everyone hopes it works out and the contract gets reworked before then anyway, and neither side expects that any coach would be working in the last year or two of his contract without an extension, because of recruiting.
In my opinion, this was premature. Remember what happened with our prior coach who had one good year and then a long term contract was signed. He had a good team one year and then came recruiting. How do we know what kind of recruiter Cig will be? If he has mediocre or bad teams think of what the buyout will be. We will the stuck again for multiple years. I would have waited until after year two to do the extension.
This is a fair criticism, but a faulty analog. IU paid a market price for a head coach and staff with a proven record of success, and subsequently enjoyed the benefit of their investment.
I read CCC made $550k at JMU..and has realized $4M in a performance/incentive laden agreement. The new deal is worth $72Million...
The previous Coach had no Head Coaching experience, and nowhere near the amount of resources this staff has. Also no NIL or portal(auction) to build a team.

Apples and rutabagas.
 
How many IU fans, given a guarantee that Coach Cig would win at least 10 games this season, would have suggested Dolson sign him to an 8 million dollar contract up front? There is no way in hell anyone (other than Cig himself) truly thought 10-0 possible in Cig's first season; likely 11-0 and possibly an undefeated regular season. They paid the man and rightfully so. Now, Dolson should send a memo to the other 17 teams in the B1G telling them to get on their football calendars and erase all the "W's" they marked in advance next to IU's name: P.S. welcome to the CIGTEN !!!
 
I've read most of the string here. So not a bunch of insight here...

1. Cignetti wins. We have not seen his best IU Football team yet...and this is a great IU football team.
2. Dolson did a great job with this hire. I agree with the posters that he was in some way, shape or form "held back" in the basketball hiring process. I don't know if the Buckner stories are true or just internet drivel. I have faith in Dolson. Oddly if he wasn't just a born and bred type of Hoosier...one could argue that somewhere, there's a program that would find Scott as an attractive candidate for their open AD position. Heidi would never let him take another position :) Inasmuch as Scott bleeds Cream and Crimson...Ms. Dolson is ... well ... she's OG Hoosier.
3. I remember articles written about Ms. Whitten when she was hired. That she was a football fan/aficionado. I believe her support and desire to have a successful program cannot be understated.
4. There'll be a lot of pressure when it's time to hire a new basketball coach (and I'm not speculating on the timeline here), however, Dolson's hiring trajectory (as it were), the NIL engagement program-wide, history and intangibles...tend to make me confident that we'll have a more inspiring hire.
