Great work by Dolson. I’ve slowly come around to the realization that I’ve really misjudged him as an AD. It’s also become clearer by the day just how sabotaged and hamstrung he has been on the basketball front.

No, the negotiators wouldn't. The figures reflect anticipated damages if the other side breaches, which are driven by completely different concerns.
The cost for IU buying out Cig will be higher at the beginning of the contract, because he wants to incentivize IU to let him build his program over 3 or more years, and would want that commitment as a requirement to leave his successful and (relatively) high paying job at JMU.
The cost for Cig paying us to leave would usually be lower in an initial contract, because there isn't a lot of demand for our coaches at big time high major schools, so there wasn't a lot of fear that he'd get poached after one season, given our history and expectations this year.
Of course, we are having a once in a lifetime type season, so that fear went up quite a bit in the last 6 weeks, which drove the need to tear up a 6 year contract after about 11 months and redo the numbers.
For example, if we fired Cig yesterday, we'd owe him 20 million. But if he resigned yesterday, he'd owe us 8 million. Quite a big difference.
Toward the end of the contract the numbers get closer, but no one cares about the numbers at the end because everyone hopes it works out and the contract gets reworked before then anyway, and neither side expects that any coach would be working in the last year or two of his contract without an extension, because of recruiting.
Coach Cig is one in a million for Indiana. We need to do all we can for continued success.
Yep, I get it. Kinda wild we are paying a guy 9 mil a year to coach football, but that's the market these days, and all the upheaval in college sports, especially with realignment and what happened to Washington State and Oregon State requires us to do everything required to be successful.
I have an in-law that works in the IU Bursars office. She may very well be working on those Cig numbers at the moment! I know she has worked on some of Colts QB Anthony Richardsons IU financials. I guess he is secretly taking some IU classes!

I see Cig was in College Game day. They asked him about his commitment to IU, he replied "I'm at an emerging power in College Football. Why would I Leave?"

Already happening. The Florida schools overspent and can’t move on from those coaches. FSU literally just fired every coordinator and had to spend to do it. ACC is so broke right now.

No fear or anxiety about this getting done or when being done. Dolson is a damn good business man. So are Cignetti and his agent. Quality meets quality creates optimum results for America's Emerging Football Super Power. No doubt we'll be just as pleased with plans for IUFB facilities.
I totally misjudged Dolson. I thought he was a Glass clone and would simply double-down on basketball and leave football out to dry.
However, that said, any AD at any school in this conference would have to be completely living in an Afghanistan cave to not see where this was all going when realignment and media deals started up. To not prioritize football for your school would be major malpractice for an AD in this conference.
Scott has proven he is VERY serious about building a championship football program!! I thought Scott was a puppet on a string for basketball, boy was i mistaken!!
You also went on record multiple times with posts saying the Big Ten was gonna boot IU from the conference because the FB team wasn't contributing enough to the Conference which was never going to happen. It was absurd of you to post that before. However, it's clear as of this year, IU football does bring value and does add value to the football side of the Conference.

I think Scott was overruled on the basketball decision. He had a guy he went all in on. His second choice was Matta and then Buckner stepped in and shut it all down.
And, I stand by the fact that they were not serious about football and could have put us in severe jeopardy. And, if we had continued that course….well, never say never.
With the ever-changing nature of all this realignment, you don’t know what will happen next. If you’ve been following closely, you’ll know that revenue sharing is a a hot button issue with the biggest football names in the conference lobbying for a bigger share than other schools.

In my opinion, this was premature. Remember what happened with our prior coach who had one good year and then a long term contract was signed. He had a good team one year and then came recruiting. How do we know what kind of recruiter Cig will be? If he has mediocre or bad teams think of what the buyout will be. We will the stuck again for multiple years. I would have waited until after year two to do the extension.

I have no problem with the golden handcuffs … CCC has a long track record of being a winner … He’s arguably the best coach IU has had since Bo McMillan… Hope Bryant Haines gets a big raise too.

The only similarity between CTA and CCC in regards to football, is being the head coach at IU.
If you think there are more then you haven't been paying attention.
CCC has been a proven winner at every stop INCLUDING IU.
Cignetti is not a one hit wonder. His last team at JMU was his best.

And the cubbard at JMU wasn’t left bare … bowl eligible again this year.
Getting the contract done now in the bye week should let CCC focus on coaching and recruiting and not fielding offers.
It wasn’t. Other teams were back channeling already. 8 million buyout and 4.5 million was easy to beat. This isn’t Allen. This guy is a real coach with broyles finalists as assistants.
Glass wasn’t the kind of AD who was going to lure in a great coach, but he was someone who could improve the athletic infrastructure. He did build the baseball/softball fields and stated the Memorial Stadium upgrades. He also procured the deal for the money to improve Assembly Hall. In hindsight, perhaps we’ve had back to back AD’s who have made our athletics better. Now, Dolson just needs to upgrade our basketball coach on par with the football coach, because he does get the blame for bringing in Woodson and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Woody is not going to bring us back to blue blood status.

You do realize that Cignetti had no team a year ago? He had almost the entire roster leave the team via the portal and last December he had to paste together a roster for this year. He brought his 13 JMU guys in and then got several more from various programs. He was hired on December 1 and by the end of the month he essentially had the team you see now. Not to mention, he had to coach them into winners
Nobody has ever achieved something like that and to compare him to Tom Allen is laughable and insane! This guy either got incredibly lucky or he’s a football savant. I’m betting on the latter.
I am not questioning his coaching ability. When I see his recruiting, however, I see only one 4 star athlete and the rest 3 and 2 stars. Same paradigm as the past. When you have middle of the road recruits results are often the same.
