Cherry will serve as a student coach

Yeah, and also CIG being creative with roster spots.

I’m sure it’s within the rules or he wouldn’t be doing it.
It’s called grey shirting. Saban, Meyer and Dabo did it and got blasted by the media and rival fans. It’s perfectly legal though and as long as the student athlete is fine with it, I don’t think it’s an issue.

That's excellent. Cig seems to have indicated a few times that he believes Cherry has a lot of promise as a player. Despite joking his first spring practice about arm strength. Seems like another indication they want to develop him. Good move by Cherry and staff.

Heal up Tyler! Can't wait to watch you winning big games and throwing touchdowns!

Actually that is not Gray shirting. Gray shirting is having a guy sign a NLI in February but not having the report until January. It was a way of oversigning guys but not having them on the squad until the following spring. I am not sure if it is still legal

I thought grey shirting was more like having HS athletes delay their arrival on campus by a semester so that they wouldn't count for the season, but would fill a spot by someone who exhausted their eligibility when the season ended.

That is actually what grey shirting is. However I believe it is now illegal.

Makes sense, thanks. I wouldn’t think that Cherry would be allowed to use NIL money though? Is it definite that the number is 105 or is that still on the table?

Besides Tyler Cherry not being on the roster, there's also Josh Pilostin, Cooper Jones, & Nick Kidwell which frees up 3-4 scholarships from the 84 previously mentioned.

I guess I'm misssing something then. Why wouldn't he be getting NIL? It seems he could still do just about anything required to "earn" NIL besides playing on Saturdays. Hell, I think normal students could get NIL if someone wanted to pay them to appear or whatever.
