Everyone seems to have us playing Georgia.
Is there a scenario where we would play someone else? If Georgia beats Texas in the SEC championship game wouldn’t Georgia move up and someone else become the #7 seed and play us?
What if ND plays poorly, could they go down to #7?
Aren’t there still a lot of possible different outcomes?

That’s because people don’t understand how this works. There are certainly scenarios where we would play someone else. One scenario is Georgia winning. Another scenario is Georgia losing!

Tonight’s seedings are just projections. There are games this weekend. Things will change.

Notre Dame can’t play poorly because they’re done until the CFP, likely as a 5-seed.

if Georgia beats Texas would have to believe they would move ahead of them. if Clemson beat SMU I would think we would move up a spot

So many variables. If SMu beats Clemson, Oregon beats Penn State and Georgia beats Texas....i think GA is likely the #2 seed. I imagine that would make ND or TX the #5 and #6 seed, Penn State or OSU #7 & #8, TN #9, and then IU is #10. Lots of options at this point but I am hoping for Georgia.

My understanding is that they’d win the SEC and be one of the top 4 teams with a bye. Then does IU play Texas in Austin?

The crazy part is that Atlanta is hosting the SEC Championship, one of four CFP Quarterfinals, and the CFP Championship.

So UGA could play in Atlanta (sec), Atlanta (qf), Neutral (sf), Atlanta (f) if they win out or they could play Atlanta (sec), Athens (1r), Atlanta (qf), Neutral (sf), Atlanta (f) if they lose the SEC Championship and win out.

If either of those paths happen there need to be investigations.

Do you all still not get this? UGA would be a top 4 seed and get a buy because they’d be a conference champion.
Sorry. I’m not laughing at your comment, just the underlying frustration. I think people are confusing rank with seeds, some don’t understand the byes (e.g. the lowest ranked conference champion does not get a bye) and others think tonight was the actual selection show/final pairings.

Just five more days until it’s etched in stone.

Finebaum would lobby to have Bama as a #1 seed regardless of record and then have them play the quarterfinal and championship game in Tuscaloosa if he could.

I wish we could play Alabama somehow. Man, has their fanbase talked a lot of s*&t towards Indiana.

Yes, but one of the conference champions would jump us and push us back down.
No. If Clemson and Arizona State both win, Clemson is likely to be the lowest ranked of the five conference champs and would enter the field as a 12. Arizona State would just replace SMU as one of the top four seeds. SMU would either fall behind us an at large or drop out of the 12-team field altogether.

I like that match up as long as they don't get the type of home cookin' by the Refs that they had against GaTech...

That would set us up for a possible run against them (GA), Texas, and Notre Dame ( or even better Alabama)..., to reach the rematch for the Championship on a neutral field against "the" o-h-i-o $tate...

I Like It... Those are winnable games...

That run would settle all the strength of schedule questions... 🤣😎

The trick is: we gotta Win that first one...

At the end of the day it’s just great to be in the playoffs. This is bigger than making the Final Four in basketball. It is so hard to break through to the upper echelon of football compared to basketball.
Yes, particularly after the shit show in Columbus when things initially werent looking too promising. We got some help and then took care of business against Purdue.

IU fans should relax and relish these next few weeks. A first round road game is a tall order but, if we can overcome that hurdle, the field is wide open and we have as a good a chance as anyone.

If UGA beats TEX, most likely UGA would play in New Orleans (committee will likely set it up so that the byes go to their natural bowl—ORE or PSU to the Rose, SEC to the Sugar, etc.).

Now that’s crazy talk. We’d have also made a 12 team playoff back in 2020. Why this is an awesome accomplishment, it’s not a Final Four.

I can’t see a path to us hosting. We’re currently at 9 overall and would need to move up 3 spots to host.

That’s because SMU at 8 is slated for a bye. If they lose to Clemson, Clemson gets the bye but both them and SMU will be behind us in the rankings. In short, the ACC championship has no effect on us.

Only UGA/TX and PSU/OR will have any effect on IU. I would expect some movement based on the W/L. Maybe not a ton to punish someone for making their conference championship, but some.

Like, if UGA loses by 14, do they swap positions with OSU? I’m not particularly fond of taking another trip to Columbus.

My preference, for now, is for Georgia and PSU to get whipped bad.

Notre dame moves up to 3 overall
OSU to 4 overall
Tenn or PSU to 5 or 6 overall

We’d be looking to play in Knoxville or State College.

I’ve tried to wrap my head around what could happen in conference championship upsets, but I have no idea how the committee would rank them.

I do think that if UGA is the only upset, then we’re likely to play in Columbus or Austin because Georgia will get the bye, and who knows how far they’d drop Texas from #2.

Yes.

SMU is ahead of us, everyone else in the ACC is behind us. If Clemson beats SMU, we probably pass SMU but Clemson or the B12 Champ moves ahead of us into the 4 seed. We stay where we are in that scenario.

We can still move up in seeding, but not because of the ACC or B12 games.

ESPN’s playoff predictor (computer generated data) gives us a 45% chance of hosting a first round game.

That things seems way off. Obviously it changes every time you run it... But the first run I did has us hosting OSU. That seems basically impossible.

I can't even come up with a scenario where we host other than maybe Georgia getting absolutely destroyed and somehow falling behind us.
