A Republican Congress gave us a balanced budget. The. Congress holds the purse strings and always deserves more credit, mostly more of the blame, for the state of the budget. The majority of the credit for the surpluses of the late 90s really goes to the dot com boom though.
As a democrat (possibly former until there's a candidate I believe in) I'm not sure I'm willing to ever vote for any democrat who was part of the Biden coverup. How can they ever be trusted to be a worthy candidate. Granted I'm sure most if not all have done something dirty or unethical, but this coverup is truly a f*ck up of major proportions.
I am surprised a partisan like Tapper is writing that book honestly. But I guess he wants a payday, and Biden is no longer useful to them so they will throw him right under the bus at this point. Honestly, he should not have dropped out I mean he probably would have lost but so did Harris. I have to wonder what they threatened him with to get him to drop out because now they have totally turned on him for the most part.
I think once Shapiro wasn't on the ticket Tapper didn't give a f*ck. Pretty sure that was his boy. Think they went to the same Jewish Day School in Philly.
Both parties have been in the process alienating all but their most tribal supporters. You'd think that if there were ever a time for a viable 3rd party, this would be it.
Oh I've been saying this for awhile and would gladly support a third party if it fit my idealogy. The issue I see though is it would take a couple election cyles for the electorate to believe they're not throwing away their vote. They need to see this as a viable party that can win.
The alienation started well before Trump.

Politicians only care about their jobs. Themselves. Once we disavow ourselves of believing they are in service and not all just cut from the same cloth we’ll fight less
I am not sure we will ever know fully who was part of a cover-up as no one will likely admit to it
Also, when it comes time to vote, it often ends up being picking the lesser of 2 evils. If pubs nominate anyone remotely MAGA or someone who hasn't had the spine to stand up to trump then they wouldn't be getting my vote. Someone along the lines of Adam Kinzinger or any of few others with an actual balls and didn't put getting reelected over the country
The budget balanced because (1) the end of the Cold War enabled significant cuts to defense spending, and (2) the dot-com boom happened. Expenses down, revenues up...you're going to get those kinds of results as long as that lasts.
I am not a republican i used to be but got sick of them and not getting anything done. I support trump now but he had to do it through a party because third parties are not viable in presidential elections. Perot had a good run but could not get it done . They lack funding, infrastructure, etc. Trump could not of won running a third party gig. If the dems want a trump type it will have to be through the dem party imo.

But this precedent does create a bad lesson for future "normal" admins. If those responsible are not punished in some way, future politicians and their handlers/hangers-on will take note.
No trickle down supply side taxation during Clinton’s term- look at data of debt against GDP- beloved Reagan benefitted the wealthy, W did, and Trump did in term one- all huge deficits. Trump gave us 7+ trillion in federal debt while telling us it was the greatest economy ever.
I might support one right now even if it didn't.
The top marginal income tax rate today is only 2.6% below where Clinton set it. And, adjusted for inflation, it kicks in around the same dollar value. There is also an additional 0.9% tax assessed on income over $200K (single) or $250K (married). So we're talking about a 1.7% difference.
I will say this much, had the dot com boom and "peace dividend" still happened, but taxes had been left at the 1992 rates (which topped out at 31%), then it's probably true that the budget wouldn't have balanced late in the decade.
But the point is that those two factors were integral to that happening. And they were both temporary.
