My MIL was not competent for very long. My wife had to take over all her finances, make sure she got to her doctor's appointment, etc. However, like your FIL, I have a friend whose FIL got dementia and he was pretty normal for a few years before it got really bad.
One thing I have never understood about having debates (which I think are useless) is why don't they have a conservative ask the Democratic candidate questions and have a liberal ask the Republican candidate questions.

Per dementia, I'm sure every case is different. In addition to my FIL's dementia, my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's during his dementia battle. Hers was pretty slow to progress, but it did progress. A couple years after my FIL passed, and she was still aware enough to understand what was going on, she progressed to the point that it was too much for her daughter and a nurse to take care of her at home. They ended up moving her from Hawaii to San Antonio, where my BIL lived, to a nice Alzheimer's/Dementia care facility. When we visited her there, she really no longer knew who we were, but she could still talk. A year or so after that she could no longer talk, and she had been a very outgoing talker her whole life, and it wasn't very long after that when she passed away. They buried her in Hawaii next to her husband. The bottom line is that every case is different.
As for debates, sometimes the debates are good/interesting and sometimes they are quite consequential. I think the debates in 2020 were consequential because they convinced Americans Biden was fit to be President and of course the debate in June 2024 was probably the most consequential in history because it convinced Americans that Biden should not be the Democratic candidate for President. Although he dropped out, he's probably the primary reason that Trump was elected to a second term.

Tell us again how cutting off the subscriptions the USG was paying for news/information services is going to shut news organizations down. They're still in business so when is it going to happen?
