can't go in to a season without a dependable post player on offense/defense

Really can't defend the roster makeup. It is clearly a guards game, but to have no proven post on O and D is just not something that can happen. As the head coach, you must manage the roster. Fischer was clearly a blow, but you had to anticipate Vonleh leaving. Lastly, there is a screaming need on the roster for a 5 (or at least a back to the basket player), and power 4, and we go and recruit a 2/3 and a 3/soft 4.

We will continue to struggle defensively next year. Having trouble understanding the roster philosophy.

100 % agree with the original poster. This is the reason that, at best, we will end up an 8-9 seed possibly win our opening round game (if the matchup is right and we are hot from distance) only to be killed by a #1 seed the next game. Some will go around proclaiming the season a success. We will come back next year with the same flawed roster, have the same problems and result. Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

The fact is crean will win just enough games to stay on and the cycle will repeat itself. Cody zeller is likely the pinnacle of his era.
