who is a premier college basketball coach? I am looking at threads bashing guys like Matt Painter, Mick Cronin, etc. I have read posts skeptical of guys like Dusty May, Otzelberger, and others. It is amazing to me the criticism some of these guys are getting with what they have accomplished over their careers. IU has been to 4 sweet 16 appearances in 30 years, and we bash a coach who made 3 in a row.

Crème de la crème:

Lloyd
Oates
Otz
Pearl
McDermott
Beard

Great question.

The answer may be that the “excellent” ones have all retired or died. Those not dead want no part of what this has become.

Under the current system— you simply need to purchase a wisely constructed roster and let them gel come March/playoff time.
Get that wallet and go.

Sounds a bit like the NBA correct?
Not much real instruction at that level.
Listen to their time outs. Listen to Kerr.
Is that a “great coach”?

Tamp down some
NIL envy issues among the youngsters, get the “sad out” of somebody on occasion (culture) and make a couple of reasonable end game adjustments. Natty results.
Done.

Genius.
Great coach.

Cronin has been to to the ncaa 12 years in a row. Three sweet sixeteens in a row. But the online experts don't want him. We have dusty banners and know all. Lol.

In my opinion, there are probably only two that are active at this point. Izzo and Self. After that, then you have a list of probably less than 10 who are trending in that direction, but haven’t actually put it all together to win a championship yet.
