Cronin has been to to the ncaa 12 years in a row. Three sweet sixeteens in a row. But the online experts don't want him. We have dusty banners and know all. Lol.
who is a premier college basketball coach? I am looking at threads bashing guys like Matt Painter, Mick Cronin, etc. I have read posts skeptical of guys like Dusty May, Otzelberger, and others. It is amazing to me the criticism some of these guys are getting with what they have accomplished over their careers. IU has been to 4 sweet 16 appearances in 30 years, and we bash a coach who made 3 in a row.
Rick Pitino
Tom Izzo
Bill Self
Kelvin Samson
Mark Few
Hurley basically has to be on the list by default.
If I keep listing it will eventually get controversial so I'll stop there.
But notice how you don't hear anyone clamoring for Porter Moser or Eric Musselman or Chris Mack this time around? That's because everyone always picks whoever has a good season right now.
Interestingly, Kevin Williard is having one of his best years ever now that he is at Maryland. He had a high profile job before at Seton Hall but Maryland is still a better gig and he seems to be competing so far. Then there is Darian DeVries to took Drake from nothing to perennial excellence, but now that he handed the Porsche over to McCollum, no one talks about him because he hasn't won the Big 12 in his first season. If he had 3 more wins right now I guarantee there would be as much talk about Devries as TJ Oltz.
It comes down to who can really coach Xs and Os when comparing equal talent. Who can achieve high level stuff. Who is a consistent winner. Who can keep it clean. And who can recruit well enough to have a deep tourney run. And finally, who is a good fit at Indiana University.
I think Greg Gard has done an excellent job at Wisconsin. I don't really think he should leave. For me, same is true for this TJ Otz. Looks like he should stay in the state of Iowa maybe. That's my opinion.
Grant McCasland is one of the few younger coaches who has actually been winning and checking off boxes. He won a CBI. He won an NIT. He's competing in the Big 12. That's pretty good so far. I like Beard a lot as a great fit at IU but this McCasland guy has hardly stepped a foot sideways. McCollum is in that camp but the difference is May or McCasland are actually competing in major conferences while McCollum is still a question mark.
I would welcome Shakka Smart to Bloomington. Greg McDermott? Sure, he is solid. Tommy Llyod maybe.
Why not just hire Beard and be done with it.
