47 points to Southern Illinois? I don't get it. Yes, part of it is lack of talent, but explain how Boise State had that run where they were in the national discussion for a decade with 2-3 star talent on defense?

I get that we are not going to have a strong defensive every year. But how is it possible that we are this BAD every single year?

It's amazing.

Poor defensive coaching.

It's that simple.

It's a combination of many things IMO. The best defensive coach I can remember iu having the last 15 years would probably be the guy during Cameron's last season, James Bell. Other than that, I simply don't remember a quality defensive coach. However, I can remember multiple coaches on the other side of the ball that were competent coaches.

The other issue is lack of speed on defense. Yesterday I was forced to run between my bedroom and living room, trying to watch IU and UL on two separate televisions. It is stunning how little overall speed IU possesses defensively, especially in the front seven. I understand the best three players were out, Ralph Green, Tegray Scales and Darius Latham, but it speaks to our lack of division one depth and speed.

I thought Wilson was upgrading our recruiting, these guys were mauled at the LOS yesterday by an FCS team. This is why it's so disappointing. I read in the Courier-Journal that Indiana actually gave up 400 yards in the 1st half alone!! The coaching is not good if that's true.

There's much more speed on defense than you're able to see. IU's problems are far more a function of fundamental play, such as knowing and reading keys and reacting correctly, remaining disciplined in your assignment, taking proper angles, etc. There are comparatively athletic defenses that perform far better because they are fundamentally better, not because they have some mythical speed advantage.

Yet all things being equal, the difference between average teams and good teams is speed, plus athleticism and smarts, then coaching. Speed makes up for a lot of fundamental mistakes if you've got enough of it. FB 101...
IU has enough speed and athleticism to be good on defense. They lack the fundamentals to consistently execute, however. That's Football 101. If you don't know where you're supposed to be or what you're supposed to do, no amount of speed will save you at this level.

We are extremely slow in the front 7. No way to sugarcoat it.
More smoke and mirror campaigns from the program as to our improvement.

Our defensive "strength" is supposedly the d-line.
I'd hate to see what our weakness is.

Linebackers on our team move like 300 lb lineman.
Simmons, Newton and Oliver couldn't start for Marion college.

Low football IQ players + lousy coaching from Defensive staff and the result is what happened yesterday.

Why didn't you attend the game?

Takes time to get the talent and smart defensive players to build a program like ours. Starting over every few years doesn't help.

The reason we stunk yesterday was a team that capitalized on our inability to account for a running QB with our best players suspended. Our players looked slow and tentative.

Love how the trolls on this board just continue to feed each other. Its like watching a soap opera at how much worse the next person makes everything. Unrealistic expectations of a team that has been bad on Defense for 30+ years isnt going to change because you say it should.

Haha... I can't believe the "give the coach an extension" crowd is out after that game. You guys are amazing! Is there anything more time won't fix???

Where did I say anything about an extension? Hire a damn coach that has head coaching experience and a history of over achieving. Coach Hep was the only wise choice we have made since Mallory.

This program competes in the B1G with MAC talent. Until a coach can step up our recruiting, he will have to win with that talent level.
