IU also working hard on Jameson Purcell, a class of ‘27 QB from Maine South, near Chicago. Has 20+ offers already, including IU.
Purcell was in Bloomington for the Spring Game. That kid put up monster yardage against some really good competition as a sophomore. Should be one to watch next year for sure. He has IU ties, both parents were Hoosiers.

We can pretend.

I still see recruiting as an edge. Easier to evaluate and retain the guys already on the roster, I believe. But yeah, have to pay everybody something, even frosh. And outbid for them.

What was it, 40% of the first three rounds of the NFL draft had been in the portal at one time, 30% or so had transfered? For QBs, where there is only one spot, I just now read 11 of the 13 drafted QBs had changed schools.

Just the other day I went back and reviewed IU recruit classes for several years and it was sad how many of the top 5-10 recruits each year never seemed to pan out. A lot never played a down. The new way things are just going to make that worse I’m afraid.

On the upside, I at least appreciate that Cig’s regime is more focused on production vs star ratings. CTA was good at signing 4*s that failed to pan out.

Hopefully we can start to sign some 4*'s that start to pan out.

Stars aren't everything, clearly, but I think we do want to see our HS recruiting classes start to trend up in the rankings because that will raise our ceiling. At a basic level, part of football is just physics of smashing into eachother and speed and mass really helps. I don't expect to be top-20 or anything like that, but an upward trend would be a good sign (duh).

HS recruiting is still the foundation of the best CFB programs and the '26 class is the first class this staff had some time to recruit.

I don’t get juiced from recruiting news any more in this wild NIL and transfer portal world. Getting attached to any player doesn’t seem to make much sense.
Yea. Also, IU has something like 300+ offers out at any one time to high school recruits. Gonna win some and lose some, and it's not like I have enough certainty about any one player to get worried if we miss on them.

Coach Cignetti has a time-tested blueprint system in which players can be developed to their full potential. That's the difference from our previous coaches.

Looks like we've narrowed that down to about 55 + or - ... this class... I wouldn't be at all surprised if went "heavy" on the true high school recruits in December and brought in 30... That would be Cigs foundation to build his next and his next and his next great team on...

Having to rely on the Portal every year just doesn't seem to match with his personality... I wouldn't be surprised to see us routinely bring in 4 or 5 guys from Portal in the future (or whatever we have a true Need for) but I think he'd much rather build a TEAM the old fashioned way...

Just my opinion, based solely on my opinion...

Seeing (on X) the recent offers to the ‘27 class, IU is certainly offering 4 star (and at least one 5 star) talent. Seems to be quite a few from the Chicago area, relatively speaking.

Yea. The offers are hard to tell, I got that 300+ number from a friend whose son was just recruited by IU. I'd guess 300 is the peak and it includes a lot of quick no's. In reality the number of players the staff focuses is on is much smaller, like the 55 you referenced.

I agree getting away from the portal is where Cig wants to go, something like 10 or slightly fewer per year looks right. Fill in some key needs and the rest is ideally developed HS talent. That's what the national champ teams have done so far.

Overall, it's a delight to watch this staff work and I've got to real worries. Probably my top concern is getting more NIL, which is a concern for every school except five or six that seem to have unlimited money.

2027 class should be a huge stepping stone. Just in Indiana alone there appears to be some major players. Monshun Sales and Izayveon Moore from Lawrence North are studs with Sales being one of the best receivers in the country. Brownsburg QB Oscar Frye led his team to a state championship as a sophomore and is the grandson of former IU basketball player John Ritter. Drake McClurg had a great year for Center Grove and has Indiana ties as well as both his dad and uncle played football here....believe he is already committed to play baseball here. Jayce Brewer is a 4* EDGE from Franklin Central that has several high major offers. Xavier Dangerfield RB Cathedral looks like he has all the tools to be a great downhill runner. Also love QB Jameson Purcell out of Chicago whose parents both attended IU. Really good opportunity to cement a hopefully lasting legacy with some high quality in-state guys.
