If he got the call and the answer was no (again), do everyone a favor, release something definitive, and put everyone out of misery so we can move on forever.

I think its much "closer" to being something that could happen than Lloyd's dreams of Mary Sampsonite falling in love with him coming true. Quite a lot of substantiated information that 4 years ago, he did give the job very serious thought.

4 years later, no longer coaching the Celtics, kids 4 years older, one of which in college...its not an outlandish thought to think he'd give the job some serious thought again.

And we might be literally minutes from getting that final confirmation from Stevens that he isn't considering it...who knows? But the fact that he didn't say it...I don't know...he's saavy enough that if his decision was 100% made against it, that there'd be some benefit to all involved to him saying that. I wouldn't think he's pulling a Dylan Harper and trolling us with these responses.

Him saying he's happy in Boston and love the people he works with...really has nothing to do with the IU job. Its the most basic "non answer" that's often used in these types of situations. Because its probably true...and like I said, has nothing to do with whether or not he'd want to coach at IU.

That’s exactly how Brad would handle the speculation. It’s a way to calm the rumors but is face saving for IU. He’s not the sort to play mind games and create smokescreens. Totally out of character for him. If he had a serious interest, he just wouldn’t have put out any message at all.

I feel the need to start every Stevens reply with the disclaimer that I do think the odds are very slim that he's considering it. And despite offering up what I do think to be rational counter arguments to that...it is still incredibly unlikely that he's considering IU.

But...

Logic seems to lead to the notion that Stevens and Dolson would have decided his interest level long ago. This move has to have been on Dolson's radar, since Bahamas, if not before that. One would think Dolson and Stevens would have, at least, had some sort of understanding where Stevens was one way or another, well before the retirement announcement.

IF that's true...and if Steven's was fully out... why not just say that? Why answer with the non answer that he's happy in Boston?

Maybe he and Dolson aren't as close as some have reported, and don't talk as much as has been reported?? Seems if they are relatively close, and if they did talk regularly...if Stevens was out, he'd say so as a courtesy to Dolson?

Timing is everything…or so they say. I do think this is Brad’s way of lowering expectations without doing any “harm” in the process. Harm could be seen as how it reflects on Dolson’s efforts to woo him again (unsuccessfully). Or harm to Dolson’s efforts to court option #2. And despite Woodson’s “retirement”, I don’t think Brad would want to be that distraction while the season is still going on. Coaching fraternity and all. And guessing Dolson isn’t ready to announce Brad is out—why would he want to interfere with raising the hopes of donors who may have been told we’re gonna take another run at him? I just don’t see Brad playing coy on all this in regards to his interest—he’s too much of a stand up guy.

There is inertia in coaching decisions. IF you go whale hunting and he publicly turns you down, coaches downstream are MORE likely to turn down the job as well, either out of pride or figuring if the top guy turned it down, maybe he knows something I don't. Nothing good comes from Stevens publicly turning down the IU job, especially before the end of the current coaches tenure. It would just make EVERYONE involved look bad.

It's not just Goodman. Every news source, including ESPN, has taken those comments and determined Stevens isn't a candidate (or said no). That might very well be true, but, unless I missed something, BS hasn't mentioned IU once--in any context--during this search.

Still, I'm not holding out hope like I did in 2021.
