Bob Knight on 60 Minutes

Too many 5 stars were walking out the door.
This is the reason Knight was sick and tired of an 8-10 record in the Big Ten. Without 5-star prima donnas and "pussy's" galore leaving, our world would be much different from today. The same goes for those 8-10 Big Ten records, including losing to Purdue. Something changed, for better or for worse, but it wasn't coach...well, at least until 2000.

I think Coach Knight will be talked about for as long as we live by those who lived it. Others will never understand, believing only the history they choose, written by those with jaded pens.

never met Recker. Don't know him. Read a story about him several yrs ago where he went into detail his departure from IU, the crash, his disbelief that RMK never reached out to him while he was in the hospital. He said he tried to transfer after yr one, his request caught RMK off guard, they talked, RMK put on the hard sell, Recker stayed. But it didn't change anything and by Feb his soph yr he was counting the days.
He would have been one of the elite great one's for IU basketball. Two more seasons in the candy stripes and who knows what might have been. Time to move on...reminiscing on what might have been only makes the hurt worse.

I'm so tempted to join this discussion with my "pussification of modern society via the participation trophy & juice box soccer mom Karen brigade---"we don't keep score and everyone's a winner" ---" but I'm trying to work while dealing with omicron symptoms (yeah I'm vax'd...big deal...didn't matter).......and I'm too tired today for debates.

in summary, the late 90s sucked because long-time fans like us could feel it slowly slipping away.

We are of kindred spirit. I hope you take that as a compliment.

It also sucked, because we were coming off a period of excellent basketball.

the Cheaney class won a ton of games. Yes, we had Alan’s knee, the frustrating loss to Duke (and the crew), but we were close to hanging a banner.

in other words, our expectations were different back then. Losing in the first and second round, being 10-8, spending half our time ranked was terrible, and not what we were used to.

edit: in ‘92-‘93 we went 17-1 in the BT.
Following that season we went 12-6, 11-7, 12-6, 9-9, 9-7, 9-7 and 10-6.

not what we were used to, but the worst conference record saw us tied for 6th. Being 3Rd-6th sucked for Knight and us, no doubt. the last four seasons were especially rough, but there were signs from a recruiting standpoint that perhaps we were going to turn the corner.

Still, it’s hard to believe how far from those levels that we have fallen.

yeah I almost added that- we came out of a tremendous extended run (1973-1994) so our expectation levels were still quite high every year. But they slowly started to slide as we worked our way through the mid-late 90s.

And yes...fast forward 20 some yrs....and what we once considered a 'mediocre' season 25 yrs ago, would now be considered a 'step forward'. The mighty have fallen. And they are us.

Anybody remember the Seinfeld "Manzere" episode.

seen every episode 100 times, quote the show daily in life. Sad, but true. Not that there's anything wrong with it.

The cross-dressing swing music/J. Edgar Hoover line from George's mom is gold. (this clip didn't include the Hoover line) Larry David is a dark disturbed comedy genius.

Kramer..."Oh YEAH....Top Floor"

He hit a game winner in the semis to beat Evansville then went off in the championship against Duke.

ah yes.
thanks for the clarification.
but i remember thinking patterson, milller, reed etc. were legit that December.

By March things were dicey.

Looking back MANY years later, a lot of those dudes were seemingly counting the days... Watching teams not even compete (think Pepperdine and St. Johns in the tourney), it was obvious a dark cloud was looming even if the average fan didn't want to see, acknowledge or accept it. Collier and Recker leaving were devastating for any prospects of success on a national scale. Excuses were made, signs were ignored etc. Sad for a lot of folks on a variety of levels. Sad for Coach Knight especially since the dark cloud still mars and complicates his excellence and genius. Sad that the program hasn't yet recovered... Sad.

Curry Kirkpatrick sporting the unfrozen caveman hair.

Forgot how much he and SI hated RMK.

I'm betting RMK and "The Anchorman" don't send each other holiday cards.
Dude was sporting a lid like he thought he was in the Bay City Rollers or some ish. It's like he took the worst aspects of three different hairstyles and melded them into one. Geesh.

The one loss in the Big Ten that year was a devastating one, a game I'll never forget. We were 13-0 going into St. John's arena. It looked like we had lost the game by one point in regulation after we scored our last bucket, but on the inbounds pass by Ohio State, Chris Reynolds was able to draw a miraculous charging call just as the Ohio State player caught the ball and turned in the back court, along the sideline. So with basically no time left on the clock, Chris Reynolds hit the first of a one and one to tie it, but missed the second FT that would have won it. We went on to lose by 4 in OT. It was our only BT loss in a 17 game conference season. That would have been quite a feat if we had pulled it off. There haven't been too many undefeated BT seasons in history. From there we made it to the Final 8 as the #1 Midwest seed ( and #1 nationally) loosing to #2 MW seed, (#9 nationally) Kansas by 6 to keep us out of the Final Four. IU finished the year at 31-4. Seven years later, our HOF coach was fired for violating Zero Tolerance Policy enacted by the IU Board of Trustees. Twenty-two years later IU continues struggling to find relevance in the eyes of general college basketball fans. IU fans maintain pride in our last championship banner from 35 years ago as attendance figures in Assembly Hall have dwindled in this century.

And they did nothing in the NCAA’s. Bowing out after the first or second tourney game just highlighted the downward spiral.

All the Ohio State guard had to do is catch the ball and throw it up into the air to win. Instead, he instinctively turned and dribbled into Reynolds. The Ohio State fans shit their pants. What was so devastating to IU was to have a chance to win the game like that, just make the second FT. I checked his season stats...Chris was a 60% FT maker. We should just be thankful he got us to OT with a chance to win in the extra five minutes. It was one of those heartbreaking losses preceding a restless night of sleep.

Now, if we can just be invited to the tournament as one of the top 64 teams we'll give each other "high fives" in a delirious state of giddiness, despite loosing twice to Purdue.

I think that was more Reynolds acting on instinct and recognition. I loved Chris Reynolds, but I seriously doubt that RMK drew up a play to specifically get Reynolds to the FT line.
RMK called a TO and went to work. ImRe-watch it. Drawing a foul was only chance IU had
Clock didn’t offer many options
I’m almost positive it was by design

Frankly, I don’t see much resemblance to what we saw the last 4 years here. This team does seem to be getting better and they could easily be undefeated given how close the 3 losses were. You seem to almost expect or even want failure.

I never buy into the "could easily be undefeated given how close the 3 losses were" talk. We've won some close one's too against teams now thinking how easily they could have won, but no matter how easily you think it could have been won, it was never easy enough. The wishes of wins and losses work both ways, in opposite direction by teams in opposition.

No, I'm starting to come around on this season's edition of IU basketball. The Iowa game will tell if it's warranted. With each game we get farther from Archie. This team is more fun to watch. I dearly hope we kick some ass in the coming weeks, including beating Purdue at home in a tightly fault contest. I'm old school in feeling that a football season with a loss in the Bucket game or two losses to them in basketball is a season muted in joy, despite what happens against the other Big Ten teams. I don't know if we can beat them, having not watched any of their games but I hear they're pretty good and I really hate to hear what might be.

I recall at the time Bob was given credit for the move. Now, understand...Knight had no way was knowing the Ohio State kid was going to be the one receiving the inbounds pass, nor that the kid would be right against the far sideline, (a big mistake) limiting his direction of movement. I imagine Knight told his players to play them tight on the inbounds in hopes of creating a charge or steal. Reynolds was quick enough to get there by the time the 2/3-3/4 length-of-the-backcourt pass was received. There wasn't much time left on the clock to do much of anything but draw an instantaneous charge, but really, to the average fan, this was only realized in hindsight. That there could be a charge called at this very last second came as a complete surprise to everyone...fans of both sides. As brilliant as the play was....one in a thousand chances of having a chance for IU to win by one point in regulation, it didn't happen. Reynolds missed the second shot. It would have been another "shot heard 'round the world," but since he missed it, it didn't even get a mention but a final score on the national sporting news. To Knight, a team's greatest accomplishment is winning the Big Ten regular season. To do it in such fashion as to be unbeaten in a special honor reserved for only the very best. That team finished 17-1 in conference play. Second place went to Iowa and Illinois, each with six more losses. It was the senior year for Calbert Cheane, Gregg Graham, Chris Reynolds, and Matt Nover. This was the team motivated by Bob's Knight clandestinely taped locker room speech so vehemently spoken.

I Googled "Bob Knight tirade Youtube" and listened to that just now (again) and it always brings back something deep within. Then I watched "Bob Knight: Disappointed" from his Sunday show with Marlow. It's hard to believe he could be quite a charmer, too. I was always afraid he would die of a heart attack at a young age.

It was on an out of bounds play but we had the ball. The defender guarding the ball ran into Reynolds as he set the screen. Reynolds goes to line as you say.

You know, you're right. I knew that Reynolds shot the free throws to the right of camera, the court, and the fact (I thought wrongly) Ohio State was throwing the ball inbounds in that same direction didn't seem right. I neglected to address those incongruent facts and am glad you set me straight. It's amazing what the mind remembers and what it doesn't. So that must mean before the inbounding out of bounds throw, Ohio State had just scored to go ahead by one. Maybe one free throw? Hell, the game is probably on Youtube. Just let the video portion do all the talking.

my favorite. The speed of that hair trigger rage is scary. He was holding it together for about 50 seconds, then just snapped like a dry twig.
I wish the cameraman had panned back to Chuck Marlow for a close facial of his reaction, a "priceless" moment we can only imagine. I miss those Bob Knight Sunday shows for their entertainment value. It's never been the same. It never can be.

side note- my son went to high school (and played sports) with George King's grandson (who was a walk on on the Purdue team a fe year's back). King actually filed a complaint with the B1G for the jackass show. Good times....
It's always been speculated that Jack, the ass, was the domesticated animal embodiment of George King. Hadn't there just been an altercation involving Roosevelt Barnes or something that pissed Knight off? I seem to remember something happened that didn't set too well with Knight, triggering this now legendary special guest appearance.

Correct, in part. There was some kind of issue away away from the ball, IIRC between Barnes and Isiah that RMK wasn’t happy about. I think both coaches had T’s within the first 5 minutes of the game!!

This was back in the day when the BT schedule basically flipped…your 8th game opponent (PU in this case) was then your 10th game opponent (You also closed the season against the same team you opened the BT schedule with, games 1 and 18).

So IU and PU played consecutive Saturdays. IU led most of the 1st game at Mackey, only to blow it in the last 5 minutes. The IU bench was not happy with the treatment they had gotten from the fans behind them in WL and RMK told King as much after the game up there. Apparently coach wasn’t happy with King’s lack of concern.

So game 2 at AH, the next Saturday, was heated start to finish!! Thus the early T’s. Happy with the game 2 win and in a playful mood, Coach said something like “I invited Purdue’s George King on to give their point of view….” then “Jack” made his memorable appearance.

He and Coach Ditka could make a game last all of the time until the next game with their personalities, opinions and general schtick.
