Jan. 6 panel seeks outside writer to help engage public

The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot on Capitol Hill is reportedly gearing up for its final report and seeking to hire an outside writer to inject excitement into its account to engage the public.

Panel members are also planning to produce a multimedia presentation that can be shared on social media and arrange “blockbuster” TV hearings to attract public attention, according to reports from The Washington Post and CNN.
“We do not want a bureaucrat to write this report but rather a historian or a journalist — or someone who writes and can tell a story in a compelling way so that people can actually understand what happened,” Rep. Stephanie Murphy, a member of the committee, told The Washington Post.
Committee members want the final report to be compelling enough to motivate the general public into reading hundreds of pages about what transpired during the buildup to the events of Jan. 6, 2021, when rioters stormed the Capitol.

WTF is this about? The Democrats and a couple of Republicans have spent more than a year embellishing and overstating January 6 for political advantage. That’s bad enough and the go-a-long media gives them an edge anyway. But wait. . . .there is more! We will spend public funds to dramatize the whole shebang to make a TV show out if it? I guess the facts aren’t onerous enough to speak for themselves, so we must hire outside professional writers to make sure the public “can actually understand” what happened. Anybody wanna bet that this production will be released during the height of the campaign season. I’m thinking the theme from Jaws will be the soundtrack and AOC will have a starring role in the promised multimedia production.

Yikes. George Orwell didn’t even go this far.

The committee has interviewed almost 750 witnesses, has 84,000 pages of documents, and hours of video evidence. Hiring someone to pull all this together and write a cogent report, with concomitant video, is a necessity.

As TMFT suggested, your fake outrage and hyperbole are on full display once again.

nothing fake about my outrage. This is using public funds to dramatize congressional proceedings for a political purpose. Period! More legalized corruption.

Seems like a great use of time. How idiotic. Absolutely disgusting. While inflation is at a 40 year high; foreign policy is a mess; the border is a mess; energy policy a joke; crime a joke; supply chains screwed. Vote every person up for re-election in Nov out. These people are absolute clowns. What a waste of time from a collection of completely useless people.

Let DOJ go to work, prosecute the hell out of these people, and quit the partisan bs- because that's all this nonsense is: gotcha bullshit politics from a collection of useless blinkards.

Congressional investigations used to have a legislative purpose. Now they are just political BS. And they even need PR people to “inject excitement”. If the GOP takes control, useless “investigations” ” and “probes” will go on and on and on making a bad situation worse.

What a country.

I don’t entirely disagree but if it were left to the DOJ it’d still be framed as partisan bs by the partisans on the other side.

*edit* and I’ll add that the reps on the committee aren’t doing nearly as much grandstanding on this as you’d expect for the amount of witnesses interviewed.

The degree of grandstanding is a question of bias and partisanship itself. To some that there's even a committee is grandstanding. That it's still in the news a year and a half later is grandstanding. We all saw what happened. The criminal cases are public. The composition of it is even partisan. It's a political farce. But the Dems will get theirs next Nov and thereafter when the pubs commence their outraged investigations. They too will be political. With tons of witnesses. Such a steward of our tax dollars.....

And the public suffers

See. There are whatabouts and then there is one side having to respond to another. Notice I didn’t say which side started it. But if one side is going to dramatize an event what do you expect the other side to do? Sit back and go tsk tsk tsk when they know the sheeple electorate eats that shit up?

There was plenty of national outrage, with Republican leadership joining in, in the days and weeks following January 6. Now that we're in an election year, it's a nothingburger for Republicans. Imagine that.

There actually was bipartisan legislation to establish a 9/11-style independent commission. It contemplated five Republican commissioners, five Democrat commissioners, with a Dem chair and a GOP chair required to approve all subpoenas. A final report would have been due by the end of 2021. Sounds like a pretty good plan, right? Well, thanks to Mitch and Senate Republican leadership, the bill was killed, the independent commission was nixed, and the Select Committee is what we got.

January 6 was a disaster, an embarrassment and a disgrace. It was inspired by a US president's false claim of a stolen election. Seriously - - holy shit. Nothing like that can ever happen again. In order to make sure it doesn't, we need to know exactly how it happened this time. This investigation is much more comprehensive than any criminal prosecution could be, and it needs to be.

The difference being that this is the only committee investigation into a plan to subvert our system of government and not the 15th?
Lol a plan to subvert our system of government. Stop. I've seen the docs from the Q Shaman and others. There was no plan. Nothing was being subverted. Perhaps delayed long enough to skip the appetizers from Applebee's for the rioters. The Repub reps are Kinzinger and Cheney. Too bitter, axe to grind people. The rest Dems. How patently unfair and absurd. Some how they will do a better job than the Federal Bureau of INVESTIGATION. Jan 6 is the dumbest most bullshit overplayed political garbage ever. That is until 2023 when we devote the year to Hunter Biden and Biden's impeachment.

This place makes me lose faith in humanity

Good grief. The republican reps are Kinzinger and Cheney. Too bitter has beens with axes to grind. Zero objectivity there. The rest are hardly investigators - just people who hate Reps. The FBINVESTIGATION did an investigation. Fed prosecutors conducted discovery. What's left is partisan politics spoonfed to the partisan hacks too dumb to see it for what it is. This will go nowhere other than a monumental waste of resources and a distraction from real problems. But alas, the tide will turn in Nov when the worthless retaliatory investigations into overblown issues will commence.

In the meantime and in between time let's find some good writers to juice it up and make it sound sexy!! Yawn. We're only growing dumber, and apart

It’s not just the Capitol breach. The broader scheme surely was a threat to American democracy. Like the apparent conspiracy to send “alternate” sets of electoral votes to the Senate. And whatever the stop the steal BS was to try and get more senators/reps to vote against certified votes to throw the election to the House.

The composition of the committee is wholly a function of obstruction in creating a 9/11 style commission. And when that was torpedoed and this committee was created, Kevin McCarthy had the chance to put serious people on it and chose to fill it with patently unserious folks that would’ve made the thing an immeasurably bigger circus than it is.

Are you even following any of the developments? The committee has uncovered and elicited compelling evidence (e.g. emails, deposition testimony) that the President of the United States was, through his campaign lawyer John Eastman, pressuring the Vice President to overturn the results of the election. I'll say it again. Trump tried to coerce Pence to overturn the presidential election and, yes, subvert our system of government and the will of the people. How and why in God's name should anyone ignore this?

I like you, McM, and some of your posts on other topics are very good. But I'm beginning to think you did a very good job masquerading as a moderate in late 2020 and the first few months of 2021. You sure had me fooled.

When the only Republican representation is bitter, jaded Cheney and Kinzinger it's a joke. Any investigation coming out of Congress is a joke, frankly. The impeachments were a joke.

I'm a strong moderate. For decades I've been a democrat. In many respects I still align more with the Dems than the Repubs. This batch I can't stand. Personally or ideologically. It's all form over substance. Virtue signaling bullshit. Pete, Harris, Biden the Squad. I cannot stand any of them. Including the media.

As I said I've long been aligned with the dems, hell out of self-interest. I loved Bill Clinton, and supported much of what Obama did. And as I said out of self interest. I tried cases for years. I'm an owner in three affiliated businesses - all of which are funded to the tune of more than 90% by trial lawyers. I can't think of an area of trial law that hasn't been negatively impacted by Republican initiated tort reform - all to the detriment of my bottom line and that now of my investors. What's more I believe strongly in individual rights and protections. FLSA changes; to a broad view of arbitration enforcement; to caps on med mal; expert qualification changes to med mal whereby experts are required to have practiced within the last five years and be in the identical specialty; to dram shop changes requiring clear and convincing evidence that the customer was visibly intoxicated at the time of serving; to changes to vexatious refusal claims; to when attorneys' fees are allowed; to the most harmful of all - allowing jurors to know an injured party had health insurance and his bills were paid by health insurance. I could go on and on and on. All of this abrogates individual protections. It's all Republican initiated.

The Republicans have been horrible for my career - my livelihood and that of my investors. And to my personal beliefs as to what is right. So I have a vested interest in all of this that I trust is more than the average joe. I prefer Democrats, but this batch of woke dems, what they focus on, Jan 6 and gotcha politics has pushed me farther right than I've ever been in my life. They are wholly bereft of common sense, and Bowl you seem like a good dude but I've read your 8 million back and forth posts with Danc and you fit right in with them. The things that matter to every day people are but a pimple on your ass as you bemoan the nonsense of Jan 6 that doesn't mean shit to anyone standing at the gas station wondering how the hell they are going to pay for gas and groceries this week.

Jan 6 is gotcha politics. Trumped up gotcha politics comprised of a comically prejudiced comittee. The outcome of this will be a great big nothingburger to everyone other than the far left NYT and other partisan hacks preoccupied with bullshit. Remember just how adamant you were about Trump's indictment...this will be the same. The committee has no powers other than that of referral. Do you think the Doj gives a shit? No.

What would be your position had Trump and his co-conspirators been successful in their attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election?

It actually was closer. I'm not talking about the hill jacks in the Capitol, I'm talking about the plan to reject the EC count and throw it to the House. The only thing that stopped it was Pence finding his spine.
Then it's a shame we don't have a real committee

It was obvious that by that time McCarthy had decided to make a mockery out of it when he named Banks, Jordan, and Gohmert. When Nancy wouldn't stand for that, he took his ball and went home.
Now it's a sham. I hope they get David Sedaris to write it

You do realize the people don’t elect the President, don’t you? I think you should read the constitution.

Even with all of that, there was no way that the electoral vote count was not going to happen in accordance with the laws of each state. Pence was not the lynchpin.

Careful. You're exhibiting signs of COH level hackery. No matter how witty or clever or erudite, it's easy to see through. Don't be that guy.
Nah. You read too much Huff post. The FBI cleared Trump. I don't buy anything this "investigation" finds. This entire thing is a distraction. Our "democracy" was never in jeopardy

My initial thought is why someone on the committee wasn’t writing a book at home each night after the committee met, like jurors do in some high profile murder trials? Release that baby a couple of days after the committee completes its business.😂
