Ballo post game comments

Of course that’s awful. But that probably doesn’t happen nearly as much if the head coach doesn’t publicly call out the fan base last senior night. He put a target on the players backs when he said what he did. And it’s further justification that it’s a good thing he’s gonna be done soon.
Bullshit justifications for poor behaviour. Some of fan’s behaviour doesn’t belong at IU.

Yeah, I just listened to Ballo's comments. I don't know how he played, and I'm sure the kevlar bodysuit slowed him down for fear of being shot dead on the court. He sounded absolutely terrified.

That's as big a smokescreen and nothing-burger as I've heard in awhile. If he got a death threat or threat at all, he obviously took it as seriously as it warranted. I'll be glad to flush this entire team and regime. I hope the phrases "true fan" and "real fans" are never uttered by an IU player again. If they're winning, there will never be a need. This is this team and staff grasping at every straw they can to avoid looking in the mirror and taking some responsibility on themselves.
I'm so happy that we have someone like you that can sit on your fat ass watch a game and determine the intent and inner workings of our players and coach's minds with unwarranted confidence based on nothing but your own biased cynically f**ked up perspective.

You're like a dime store version of Sigmund Fraud.

I truly believe you need to contact management and complain about how offended you are by your own assumptions.

Didn't Delray make a Final Four with Providence?
Yeah. Pitino coach and Billy Donovan hitting bombs put them in the final four. If you look at Delray’s life it has been a strange journey, very strange. Couldn’t ask for a better teammate but strangeness seemed to target him.

It's not hard to see the line of comments and how they've progressed. From Woodson talking about "real fans" and "true fans" to Galloway and Leal's comments at their first senior night, to Goode and now Ballo, talking about real fans. Dumb to try and cause division in the fanbase when you are underperforming. Haven't sniffed a conference title or S16 in what, almost 10 years? They should be thanking fans for continuing to show up and support them instead of trying to divide them. Most programs at this point would have half full arenas, and IU fans continue to show up, at home and on the road. There are lots of problems with this team and program; our fans aren't one of them.

You make me laugh some times when I need a good one. But, are you ever happy?

Don't these kids get media training?
His comment is a message to the selection committee that we are done playing here. Pick someone else.

I don't remember anyone booing our 6 win team in Crean's first year. Nobody got death threats that I am aware of. Why? That team wasn't good, but they played hard and competed the best they could. This team doesn't get back on defense (Ballo jogging back in the last game) doesn't get out on the shooters.
I
I will only miss the 2 players that wanted to be at IU. Galloway and Leal didn't play here because of their NIL deal. Goode played hard and was the one leader on the team in his first year. There is a chance he can play another year. I would take him back. The rest need to find a new deal somewhere else.

Ballo’s home country is much more dangerous than anything he’s reading on social media. There’s all sorts of bad s&@$ going on in Mali. He would have a higher probability of dying young over there than getting paid $1.2 million in the States and getting a free education.

He's not wrong. Painter isn't the 1st to acknowledge this. It's common knowledge a certain amount of the fan base is why the IU coaching job is not as desirable as it use to be.
What percentage? My bet is that it is no larger than other schools.
The big knock on IU is not the fans but the admin has been too patient with coaches.

If Woodson was at UK, he wouldn’t have made it beyond year 2.

Several guys were getting death threats. I think we can all agree that shouldn’t be happening.
That’s terrible, but I honestly think a lot of situations like that are trolls pretending to be fans of certain schools to rile people up. I can’t imagine anyone who really supports a university or sport would stoop to such a level unless they were insane.

You can think what you want, but the IU fanbase is not the problem. Again: as I see it, you have two choices: 1) a fanbase that doesn't care much and shows up only when you win. That's 98% of the programs out there. Or, 2) you have fans that care and turn out to see you play, and when things go wrong have some fans that get frusrated and show it. There are a handful here, primarily UK and IU and maybe UConn, Lville and Kansas. Give me an example of a fanbase you see turning out in the 75%-80 range (butts in the seats; games are still sellouts for the most part in conference) for a team that has made the tournament 3X in the last 10 years, and advanced to a S16 once, 10 years ago. I agree, it's not as attractive a job as it once was, but I'd suggest that's due to the admin, not the fans. I think IU fans should be celebrated for sticking by their team. The closest example I've seen are USC (South Carolina) football fans. That fanbase has continued to support their team with very limited success. I only know it because I live in SC.

Yep. And folks need to keep in mind Matt was reciting his IU negative-recruiting pitch in that press conference. I'm sure he loved getting that question and having the stage to take a shot at us.

The fanbase/fishbowl narrative is ridiculous. Yea it's a little wild online, but that's online. Everyone knows what comes with the territory online. Yes, some of it is awful and IU, like all fanbases, has some losers (and non-IU people posing as losers) that send terrible DMs to players. And even that doesn't seem too bad -- Leal's tweet about missing the tourney got 250+ comments and quick scroll it's almost all very positive.

The reality is the bball program is revered in Bloomington and Bloomington is full of friendly and shy Midwesterners. After the Illinois game, which I guess was the peak of fan dissatisfaction, Woody could have went to Uptown for dinner and I bet no one says a word to him. This is not South American or Eastern European soccer.

The get in price for the Ohio State game was around $140. That's insane for as bad as we've been.

The fans are a big net asset, they provide gameday support and a lot of revenue/donations. The IU job has pressure because people care (isn't that a good thing?) and we pay the coach a lot of money and give them a lot of resources and with that comes expectations like any job that pays a lot.

I think we'll find a good coach this time around. It would be nice to just focus on the team and games and not all the inner workings of the program, athetlic dept/IU admin, donors, whatever.

There was even a commercial about sports betting, and then going after college players because of it, last night. One of those get help if you have a gambling problem, things. Only this one was targeted at people that are lashing out at the players...

So, as anyone that can look beyond the end of their nose would have already assumed...its not an "IU fanbase" thing. IU might experience more of it, but that's because of what you and kkott have said, and that isn't a bad thing, at all.

Agree totally. I've met a few good coaches in my 70 years (including Izzo and Painter) and they are all are type-A uber confident people who would not be afraid to take a job because of a school's fans. They believe that their success would win over the fans. If the fans scared off potential coaches, then UK would never have a coach.
Izzo & Painter's defense of Woodson recently was part of the coaching fraternity's desire to stick up for one another.
