It will be interesting to see who wins the backup QB job in spring. Will it be the younger Mendoza brother or the higher rated Cherry? Mendoza has 2 years of eligibility so if the younger brother stays we could end up seeing 4 years of the Mendoza brothers starting

We also offered Jacob Bell out of the Chicago area who is in this year's class but is currently committed to Ball State. I would imagine he flips his commitment.

He played in 6 games in 2023 and 5 games this year. Yes he has started or been the main guy in what you outlined but for all intents and purposes, he's a pretty experienced backup.
My point was he had a heckuva lot more game experience than Little Mendoza, Cherry, or any late signing freshman. Unless they’ve shown an awful lot of poise in practice, that’d be a pretty scary proposition going into a season.

Agree. Are we comfortable having Cherry or younger Mendoza starting if Fernando gets injured like Rourke did?

Gotta find someone with at least as much experience as Tayven, don’t we?
I'm not sure we do. Depends on what the coaches see in practice. If they are comfortable with what they are seeing from the 2 frosh after a year in practice, you probably have to give them the shot at QB #2.

If kids are doing the job in practice and still not seeing a path to the field, they will be hard to keep. Plus it would be hard to sell an experienced QB to come in and be #2.

Inexperienced back-up qb seems more and more the norm everywhere in the NIL era. The “if I’m not starting, I’m not staying” attitude has really put a dent in quality depth, certainly at the qb position. As far as backups go around the country, Tayven had more experience than most. Don’t fault him at all though. Let’s see how the UGA back-up does if they NEED HIM TO actually WIN the game, not just manage it vs ND…I think ND has a real chance to win this game.

Allar staying means Pribula moving on. TJ knowing someone was coming, time to move on. Devin Brown at OSU knowing he won’t be starting next season, time to go. And finally, the highly sought after ones, who were real good at their first place? Probably moving on for more exposure and more $$$$.

ND had a chance to beat GA even with Carson Beck as QB. ND is as good or better than GA.

Looks like Wilson is the backup to Fernando now. Sucks about Cherry 😞

Grant Wilson, 6-3, 217 looks like a capable backup QB, who can make all the throws & is mobile. He appears to be a good get who gives us another experienced QB with 1 yr. of eligibility remaining.
Well he torched JMU LOL.

This was necessary. I can’t recall a single season going back to CBL that IU has made it through an entire season with QB1.

IU saw this year (‘24) that relying on one guy isn’t practical.

Yes it’s unfortunate for Tyler and Alberto that they are more likely to sit.
Tyler getting a non contact injury (recently reported) is all the more unfortunate.

But sorting things out is what spring practice is for.

College football is like MLB now. Schools like Old Dominion are AA the MAC is AAA and the B1G is the majors. I don't like it but that's the new reality.
Yep. Which of these Power 2 schools is going to be the first to officially create a relationship with one of these smaller schools and create essentially a minor league team they can pluck talent from? I don't think we are too far from that.

If we need his help to beat Old Dominion it’s going to be a long year.

We shouldn't need the help but even though they were only 5-7 in "24" they did play South Carolina tough at SC, losing by only 4 points to one of the more pure talent teams in the country... They only lost to James Madison by a FG and to Virginia Tech at VaTech by 10...

No one is going to confuse them with Oregon but they do have enough talent to be in the position to win in an upset if they're not taken seriously...

Cig knows all these guys from the Sun Belt. He knows who can play. He brought over the 2 kids last year from ODU who he played against while at JMU. Asbury was a gem. Makai Jackson, another example. Was at St. Francis. Transferred to App State. Been likely recruiting him for several seasons.
However, this is really nothing unique for IU.
When Michigan signed the kid from Fresno State, Keene, they asked Moore about him at the bowl game and he said that they really liked him when he played against Michigan, thought he made some really nice throws.
Coaches watch hundreds of hours of tape and then see these guys first hand in games.
I’m sure the WR from Michigan liked what he saw here when he played against us.

Can not take ODU lightly. They play bigger Conf schools tough regularly. Have beaten VT a couple times also.
