But all of these schools share in common is most likely that when they put these contracts together they were absolutely certain that they had hired the right coach and would never have to trigger the buyout. And that they were structured by an athletic department without any adult supervision.

I can promise you there’s a legal review, comment, sign off protocol that is SOP. Lots of cooks taste the sauce before it leaves the kitchen.

Nebraska better be right. They haven’t been for the last few hires they made.

Don't forget, when they pulled the trigger last year, Nebraska could have saved millions merely by waiting a week or two. Obviously football is important to them.

Also keep in mind buyouts are designed to keep coaches from getting poached by other coaching jobs. The expectation is they will do well and other schools/NFL teams will want to hire them away.

FYI, Kalen DeBoer's salary is about $3.2MM with a $12MM buyout if I read the Google thingy right. Just sayin'.

I would be in favor of them getting Kaylen back. Too bad his quarterback has run out of eligibility!

It is disappointing to me that the institution teaching young adults would actually think what ever coach is the right coach.
It is obviously a bit of a crap shoot. Someone akin to NFL draft picks.

So can coaches skip out on the their contract anytime as long as someone is willing to pay the buyout?

The big difference is the basketball program can see a way back to national prominence. Football requires three top 10 conference teams to have down seasons and another pandemic.

Exactly- the one thing in common most of these schools share (IU not in that list) is that they are willing to pay that buyout and find a way to do so if the sh@& hits the fan.
 
Also doesn't hurt to defray the expenses when you're drawing 90,000 fans as opposed to 45,000 fans (wishful thinking).

In my humble opinion, buy-outs to keep coaches from jumping schools means the cost to buy out for both parties need to be the same or at least coach buying out need to be very close to schools buyout. Having a buyout where the school has to pay $100 and the coach can buyout and leave for $20 doesn't prevent poaching. At that stage, it is just a guaranteed contract with a relatively small cost for the coach to opt out if successful.

yes, that's really more of a "Pac-12 salary" than a "B1G salary" in size, and it would be interesting if we could compare the salaries of DeBoer's assistants to those of Allen too
 
According to the article, the Big10 is tossing money around like confetti for coaches. Come on IU, step up your game and get real with a head coach hire for once

and just how often in the last 20 yrs has a buyout ever kept a coach from leaving, who otherwise would have?

i did an extensive deep dive into the cumulative conference won lost records each yr for the last 100 yrs.

by some incredible coincidence, it came out .500 winning percentage every yr.

take OSU, Mich, PSU, (for yrs applicable), out of the mix, and it's way below .500.

this is a fiscally totally irresponsible ole boys network dividing up money among themselves essentially "taxed" from fans and non fans, with absolutely zero accountability to anyone ever.

and the primary fault isn't with the coaches, (who turns down free money), but the administrations.

and reality is, there are probably at least 50 extremely capable individuals for every head coach position, so to have an out of control bidding war every time there is an opening is beyond absurd.

new plan, the job pays $250,000 yr, (a little more for coordinators), buyout is never more than 2 yrs salary, if one guy doesn't pan out try another, and save your money for NIL where it can actually make a difference.

i guarantee you schools would do no worse long term under such a plan.

School’s can’t put their own money in NIL. We will get over $80 million a year and you want to go cheap?

Can buyouts be performance based? Seems like that would be the smartest thing to do.

If that is possible, then could do something like buyout is $10K x (wins/6).

Buyout (based on above formula)
3 wins = $5k
6 wins = $10k
9 wins = $15k

If a coach stinks then buyout is low. If a coach is good, then a buyout is high to prevent other schools from poaching.

Of course, coaches wouldn't benefit from that but they are getting millions while schools take the risk on if they are successful or not.

Could have a buyout floor for the first 2 or 3 years, such as buyout is whatever is higher (10k or result of performance calculation) until after year 3.

They're a sleeping giant now with their new facility coming on line, and the NIL money they're going to have around. I have no doubt they'll be back within just 3, maybe 4 years and give any Big 10 team all they can handle.

They needed NIL, as the Nebraska brand was no longer as strong, but NIL is the lay of the land now. Plus still a lot of brand - not what it was, but more than all the mid tier Big 10 such as Iowa.

They'll be back, and back big.
