Assistant Coach

Rick Bozich tweeted:
"With word spreading former Hoosier Mike Roberts is new #iubb assistant, I asked coach from Southern Conference about his competitor: "Like him. Very good basketball mind. Solid recruiter. Big loss for UNCG ... he would be a great hire ... they should be ecstatic about him ." "

Don’t understand the negative nature of this post or others. An Indiana kid who still loves IU basketball, has a lot of experience, and everywhere he has gone, the teams seem to get better.

I see nothing negative here. Were some expecting Brad Stevens to be hired as an assistant coach?
Do you mean IU passed over Brad Stevens again. I was hoping for Brad or Pop. At least Archie stayed with hiring someone with Indiana ties. Mike Roberts could turn out to be an excellent hire as Assistant coach at IU. Roberts having both played and coached under RMK is a plus. Surprised that IU admin didnt veto any former Knight player or coach from returning to IU. I see this as a plus going forward. I hope Mike Roberts is a shot doctor and a big man skills coach, and can kill it recruiting in-state talent.

The detractors never played basketball, never coached basketball, and never attended IU.

How is there no story, announcement or post about this here? Very bizarre sequence of events. The hire, the announcement, etc... Actually a sensible hire, IN kid, former player and captain and coming from an assistant stint with a program that has steadily risen to the top of their conference. There's a Star article, but nothing on IU's own bball website. Bizarre.

Th best part about this is the hype Fatjohns set for the peegs dorks. He said it was some very established recruiter, money wasn’t an option, all the choices were very well connected in current recruits.

Well ol fatty was making shit up while making those 3 am milkshakes again. He said things can change in a blink of an eye to cover his ass. Lol Archie and staff don’t tell him a thing and he has been making up shit for the blind followers of the fat crew at peegs. So humorous.

Serious question. Did you think IU was about to shell out a million dollars to hire a third assistant? I mean seriously, what were IU fans expecting with this hire? I could understand a bigger name coming in if Ostrom left to take a head coaching gig at a smaller school, but IU already has their lead recruiter and associate head coach on staff.

IU needed an X's and O's guy who can assist with game planning who can assist in player development. Nobody has any freaking clue what Roberts capabilities are in that regard. This is just reality.

And you have some serious mental issues.

I think the boss was a great hire as I have said on here several times over the last few days. I wasn’t expecting anything more. The fanboys at peegs were however. You know, what I clearly stated in my post. But that isn’t on your agenda obviously. You are still stuck in your feelings about me I see. Sorry sweetie.

Are you 10 years old?

Sure. I hope he turns out to be all world, becomes the second coming CBK (without the antics), and takes over the reigns of IU after CAM wins 7 championships and retires.

Either way, we shall see. Always questions when assistants are hired. This one seems to show potential.

I'm not sure on the insults (he must have really pissed you off) but yeah, that's always been my rub with how they 'report' news. Seems a little too IU positive which comes across as the classic 'feeding the fanbase what they want to hear' to keep subscriptions (which, I actually understand as it's their livelihood) but I blame that more on the community vs Rabjohns. He's set it up to where he's like an abusive boyfriend that has them believing that only their staff knows the truth...everyone else are phonies or just copying him.

But things change at the last minute and recruiting is always fluid.

My one example was when he did an article on Tyus Jones and then put him on the hot board as a serious IU possibility. So much that posters would talk of future lineups with Jones. Now I live in Minnesota and my girlfriend had two kids that went to Lakeville, which is the sister rival to Apple Valley. Her kids said it's well known that he and some guy out of Chicago (Oakefor) want to play together and it's between Duke and Arizona. No one has even whispered IU. So I told Jeff that on his post and he got pissed at me and basically said I was wrong, etc so yeah...he gets a little personal about keeping his image up as THE Indiana insider.

So him getting called out on the Roberts thing, and watching the staff backtrack and try to make it seem like we are the idiots is admittingly entertaining to watch.

Are you the pipeline to our recent Minnesota talent pull?

I hold a grudge. He and peegs banned me for calling them out and being too critical during the Crean era. I was way worse on Hanner than Romeo.

At one point they would not allow any criticism towards Crean. Which again is humorous because now they rag on him all the time. They obviously had some good inside connections with the Crean staff and they would not say anything to screw that up.

I wish we had a pipeline. There is a ton of talent up here and they all stock the Duke's, Kansas's and now Arizona's rosters.

Even their secondary talent is tough as nails and was the backbone of Bo Ryan's run at Wisconsin.

If the Gophers ever close the border we're in for a lot of trouble....but they never have.

Yeah I always took that as them protecting their livelihood vs being a site for IU fans to say what they feel.

Kind of similar to the Beatle newsletter fan group from the 60's. Once I viewed it like that it made it what it is. A fan club site with as good of access as anyone (but even that is waaay overplayed...it's not like they have special secret insider access that no one else on the internet does).

Aw man Hanner, such a classic case of a guy with godlike athleticism who couldn't actually play.

I remember when he rarely scored in double figures (I think he had 4 or 6 vs Bloomington South) Rabs slanted that it was because the LaLu guards (one was Davis that became an all conference defensive player) were selfish ballhogs looking to get theirs.

I guess that's my rub. I actually like Snow because he tends to call it as he sees it, I don't see much fan slant. Even when he explained the Roberts situation, he still was more cut and dry than the rest of the staff. That's what I prefer from my insiders....give me the good and the bad.

Because when you pump a lot of sunshine, when it doesn't come the backlash is intense.

Close the border? Why do people believe this nonsense? This isn’t 1934...no one ever “closes a border”. Get a clue man.

Once again your lack of reading comprehension is showing.

He said IF they would ever close their borders. Not to speak for him but I took that to mean if they ever kept a majority of their home state players in state. He also stated "BUT THEY NEVER HAVE."

Do you just search for things to bitch about?

I'm assuming that question is rhetorical. The answer is all too obvious.

But are they Indiana smart?

I thought in addition to Race, there was a more recent highly rated recruit of interest from Minn...I may be mistaken.

Oh ya the Hype machine was real on that guy. Crean said he was going to be a 1st round pick. I actually remember Rabs saying those guys were selfish covering for him haha. Good times. I spent many of hours on the phone with friends cursing Hanner up and down.

But hey was a good drinker! Seeing him with the single yellow corn row playing in the tourney made me puke. Go figure, we were not in it that year. Every player that leaves makes the tourney it feels like..... and that drives me bonkers more than about anything else.

Over the last twenty years, I'd still take the Indiana HS all stars over the Minnesota HS all stars but it would be close. Especially lately.

Minnesota constantly has guys every year at all ranking levels like Indiana does.

Their two main AAU programs (Howard Pulley and D1) have won as much as Indiana elite.

Yeah, the NCAA tournament is consistently littered with Minnesota three star players not playing for the gophers.

Dawson Garcia is the latest interest.

Means recruit your home state. More importantly make your program desirable to your local footprint.

Bob Knight would shoot you in your face for some of your takes.

Ya for sure. I was in my mid 20s when Hanner was driving down Kirkwood after a fifth of vodka. Then in my late 20s when he came back to get hammered after we kicked him off the team.

I use to work in remote county courthouses and would take hour or so breaks a few times a week to talk to my buddy about IU bball. I hated Crean the most. I probably have uttered the words F Crean close to 100k times.

Is this disturbing? Hanner actually was a POS. Only player I can say that about off the top of my head. I think Romeo is actually probably a great human being, never heard anything to make me think otherwise. Has nothing to do with basketball though.

You guys and assistant coaches lol. A few years back our strength and conditioning coach was "too energetic" on the sidelines and now, after everyone calling for an ex IU player, Archie chooses the wrong one. I'm sure Isiah Thomas would have come sprinting for the opportunity

No he got a good one. Boss man will work tirelessly and put in a ton of hours in open gyms giving IU a presence. Schillings would not hit the pavement and grind long hours, Boss will.

Work ethic is a great quality both in basketball and in real life. I have no doubt Mike's work ethic will be second to none, just like it was on the basketball court.

This is 2019, Build the Wall.
You will never get them all, but inside out recruiting is a much better approach to IU recruiting.

There’s a difference in recruiting your own state and “closing the border”. Every school in history has recruited their own state, yet none have ever “closed the border”. No school can ever get all local talent. Some kids just want to leave home. This nonsense is just spewed from unknowledgeable, biased fans.
