Assistant Coach

I know, nobody knows dick about an incoming assistant coach that it's funny to me the backlash already.

I mean the dude is from Indiana, played at Indiana and then started his career under Knight...figure that alone would give some on here a boner.

Reading his bio, he's had success and the dude is what a three time academic all American (so he ain't no dummy). Add in all the Indiana ties and..maybe he's not so bad? I honestly don't know.

Neither does anyone else.

Reasonable take. I don't know what will be asked of him. Assistants can be good by being professional, dedicated, and following direction. Mike is probably good at those things. Whether he can coach kids on the court or develop game plans and scouting reports, I have no idea.

Nope. 4 star. He has an excellent reputation with X’s and O’s, with a great personality and ability to relate to 18-22 year olds. I’m just messing with you, but I have heard that opinion of him.

How in the hell do you and Tommy Cracker deal with this board? You’re two of the smartest and best posters on this whole site, but I can barely even lurk on this side because it’s a cess pool of incivility and basketball ignorance. Other than you two, Pete, and a handful of others, it’s unbearable. However, the premie is dead and this side actually has some life to it, even if it’s full of ignorance and trolls.

Thanks for the shout out my brother!

As far as the board being a shit show, that's when it's the most fun and entertaining (at least to me). As long as we relatively stay on topic, regardless of how much I agree or disagree with the take, unmoderated is the way to go.

It's all about personal entertainment and sometimes a train wreck is more interesting than cspan.

Not sure where the Lasalle reference came from............

Like you, I reacted in horror when I first read about this. There was a thread a couple of months ago where we were talking about RMK's recruiting in the late '90s, and how little effort was going into it. Mike Roberts, who was totally a Pat Knight recruit, was the example I specifically mentioned (although I couldn't remember his name until I looked it up).

That said, when I googled his name there was a story from 2014 about MR coming back to B-Ton for a game with his UNCG team. The story was 100% about how 'passionate' he was and still is about B-Ton & IU basketball. It also mentioned that he was someone who was always up giving direction during games.

As another poster mentioned, you're not going to get a superstar with the 3rd asst coach position. At least we know this guy won't have an agenda that conflicts with what we want to get done. And maybe some of his passion will rub off on the players.

Roberts is actually from Eugene,OR. I believe Pat Knight out recruited Air Force for his services at Indiana.

I was surprised to hear his name but hope he does well in his new position.

I think Roberts is originally from either Terre Haute or Evansville and moved out to Oregon as a teenager and went to high school there before transferring to a prep school out East. In fact I'm pretty sure it's the prep school Tom Coverdale attended (in New Hampshire maybe?) and that's how IU found him.

His UNCG bio says he's a Terre Haute native but that he played HS bball in Oregon. I have no idea at what age he moved from IN to OR.

I went to another site to get a rational view and came here to see posts from people that get upset over things they know nothing about. I wasn't disappointed!

I supported the idea that someone with an IU past might be selected. I wasn't sure how Coverdale or Lewis would fit in. It would seem they would have a similar mindset to Archie as former PGs, but was Archie looking for someone like him or someone that brought a different background? Maybe neither one was interested in coming back or another assistant role.

Archie is the main recruiter. We have other coaches that will fan out to cover more ground. You know IU is serious when Archie is the one at the games and meeting the families.

It is difficult to know the impact individual assistants make from the sidelines, scouting reports, recruiting, or interaction with the players. I have never been on a team or staff with Roberts, If he is the selection, I will trust that Archie picked the guy he wanted and that he is qualified for the position.

Anyone calling the move dumb are making this claim without knowledge. I thought I had ignored all those people that are consistently negative without cause or thoughtful evaluation. Some even bring up his success as a player. These people need to put on a pointy hat and go sit in a corner.

If it is going to be Mike Roberts, does anyone know what offense and what defense University of North Carolina Greensboro runs? What systems has he been coaching lately?

New Hampton School in New Hampshire.

Here's his UNCG bio for any intersetd:

I'm curious where his name came from in connection with the position. I haven't seen any other info outside of this post on who will be hired and the person that initially mentioned him gave no information on where they got the information. The most I've seen elsewhere recently is that we should expect an announcement soon.

Thanks and just Googled Tom Coverdale and he in fact attended New Hampton as well. I'm pretty sure they came in around the same time so that has to be how IU found him.

I would bet he made the first call and sold CAM on his IU love/connections.

I don't see him as a recruiting force, but he may help in other areas.

If I read it right, I think Roberts has been with Wes Miller for the last 8 of Miller's 9 years at UNCG. Which means that he was probably an important cog in what was a pretty impressive transformation, particularly defensively. I also read where Miller said that Mike has a good reputation for developing big men.

Also, it scratches my itch for a Knight protege, even though Roberts was only at Texas Tech for one season as a grad assistant. I am aware that IU ties probably doesn't make a bit of difference in the whole scheme of things, but I like it anyway... Shoot me:)

Anyway.. I'm on the road this week, is this Roberts hiring a done deal or rumor mill?

Sounds like it's all but a done deal. I don't think a name like Mike Roberts surfaces over night without some serious traction. Ryan Miller (Mike's brother at TCU) is another name that was thrown out.

BTW, I learned yesterday that UE hired Bennie Seltzer as an assistant.

I also heard Todd Lickliter's retirement from UE might have had something to do with health. He had fallen off a roof and was seriously injured not to long ago.

It's pretty obvious those who are dissing this hire (as opposed to Coverdale or Lewis) are confusing his coaching acumen with his impact as a player. If that was the case, Knight would have been mediocre on the sidelines.

Archie needs someone that knows “the Indiana way” far more than he needs a recruiter. I know nothing about Mike Roberts, but I hope he is an ambassador for the passion and tradition in this program.

He didn't play for Knight. He was a freshman in the Fall of 2000; RMK was fired in September of 2000.

I believe they were able to do player workouts back then without a full team (like once a week), so Knight did coach him very briefly as a player.

Hopefully Mike Robert's can help with the offense. Is he a shot doctor?

You said it! No one on this board has the slightest idea of what he brings to the table as a coach. However, so many on the board are all knowing.
I just wonder if Izzo took this much heat when he hired Fife. He had very little experience at the time, from Michigan but played for IU. Now most think he is the heir apparent for the HC job.

He had also been the Head Coach at Fort Wayne and built them up. Fife is probably really happy about 1 of his teammates getting the IU job.

Who knows...Dane may want to retain Roberts on his staff if Donovan isnt ready to leave the pros after this season...Roberts could offer some continuity to the staff change...

We are a mediocre basketball program thanks to our Lawyer, Tommy Bahama wearing Athletic Director. F that guy.
Wow, really, Mike Roberts has 8 years as a college assistant coach, he is assistant head coach at UNCG which has built a ncaa quality program. He coached at CAL for 2 years under Brian Braun then followed Braun to Rice. He has developed players and has an offensive knack. Every one of these negative posts has no idea what Mike Roberts has been doing. This is a QUALITY hire.

Hell. This is nothing. We once plucked a head coach from Army for heavens sake.

It's Mike Roberts unfortunately. Or so it looks.
Don’t understand the negative nature of this post or others. An Indiana kid who still loves IU basketball, has a lot of experience, and everywhere he has gone, the teams seem to get better.

I see nothing negative here. Were some expecting Brad Stevens to be hired as an assistant coach?
