Assembly Call

Yeah, I like the first 4, but the only reason Brownell is on any list is because he’s from Evansville. There are plenty of coaches with a comparable resume that we would be livid about if IU hired them. Give me McCollum or DeVries. Might have a lower floor, but they have a far higher ceiling in my eyes.
I get it but Brownell has did at mutiple places he has Clemson 16-4 off a elite 8 and a couple years back a sweet sixteen. I like McCollum but kinda like Archie I want a guy who has won at mutiple places.

The critique of Leal is tough but fair. What sucks is that he and Galloway are our best options. They were supposed to be 10-15M guys at most this year. Tucker's hitting 38% on 2s and is 1/16 on 3s. Bako's D is horrendous, as is his shot selection and effort.
the best option I believe is to figure out a role for Carlyle (not hard: defender, ball handler and driver/energy) and get him to accept and play hard for it. But, that would take coaching.

Big difference with Archie and McCollum is that he won 4 out of 5 D2 National Titles and was the odds on favorite to have made it 5 out of 6 during the Covid cancellation. Yes, it is only D2, but, much as it did for Pearl, it shows that his success transfers from one level to the next. He is outpacing DeVries at the moment who had Drake rolling.

DeVries is outpacing McCullum.
After transferring to a stronger conference, he now has wins over Gonzaga, Kansas, Iowa State and Arizona.
McCollum has a win over Vanderbilt?

I agree that his record in DII and at Drake so far is stellar, but can he win a big game in a big conference? Someone will take the gamble. Can IU take that gamble?
DeVries is winning at WVU right away and has a win at Kansas. Very impressive.

Don’t know how these guys do it. Stay professional and give a lot of their time and effort to a program that gives shit back. Andy, Jerrod, Ryan, and coach all have unique basketball minds that blend together quite nicely.

I have also noticed a “young blood”, as coach would say, that has provided a few appearances on the show. @Josh_Pos you have a future in talking sports. I like your style a lot. Keep being true to yourself and never lose the confidence in your opinions, the authenticity bleeds through the mic.

One critique tho, Leal was awful @NW. You would have hit the rim 100 out of 100 times if put in the same situation as Leal on that shot. Don’t get me started on his passing. For a 5th year senior him and Trey are some of the dumbest IQ players. They have moments, because we really suck, and you notice a few good thing every once in awhile… but good teams Leal never sees the court. Him starting should get Woodson fired.

Give it a listen.
Been watching these guys for a few seasons, agree good crew that somehow keeps it light for the most part. That’s been tough for them lately though as they do call an ace an ace.

Trey's been off his game all year. Maybe not fully recovered, who knows. Just doesn't seem like the same player who had the balls to try throwing down on big Ogre in Mackey 2 yrs ago. I gave up on him fixing his shot 2 yrs ago. It is what it is. He was never a shooter...more of an athlete. And hasn't been the same athlete since his surgery. IMO
He blew all his NIL in the Bahamas at the blackjack table. It gets to the best of us 🤷‍♂️

Devries would be my pick between those two only as I view Big 12 a better league than MoValley- success at two D-1 schools

Both solid choices. I’m in the process of falling in love with McCollum though. And the dominance in D2, in my opinion, would be a separator vs DeVries.

All you can do as a coach is compete against your schedule and your peers. He has dominated his peers thus far.

Odds probably say it’ll be neither of those guys. But I think either of them would have success at IU.

I’m speaking to DeVries records with Drake as an apples to apples comparison.

EDIT: I like DeVries a ton, so my comparison was not meant to be a slight against him in the coach debate. I agree with all your points.

More film to come in…how Drake finishes the season. How they do in their conf tournament. How they do in the NCAAs, if they make it. All of that is important.

Of course, we no clue if either of them would be considered by Dolson, or if they’d be interested if so.

But as of today…comparable to each other…McCollum is more impressive to me.

Pearl was dominant with USI. That transferred to Milwaukee, and if he hadn’t gotten himself into trouble UT would’ve been the beneficiary of being the one to bet big on him. Imagine having a 43 year old Pearl without the baggage!…I don’t know if he is my #1, but if we miss on the big names then he is far ahead of Brownell and the like in my mind.

Which is why I said at the moment. I like DeVries a lot. My position is more against Brownell being included in the first list of names.

Yeah…if any of the Stevens, Pearl, Oats…maybe even Golden types become legit, interested contenders, I probably would shade towards the more proven P4 guys.

But man, I just have a feeling McCollum is gonna land at an elite high major in the next few years and will have them top 20 competitive, basically every year.

Seems like a good candidate that's why Brownell and McCollum are down on my list you have to first try with the best first Oats, Pearl, Beard, Wright, Bennett, then work to the next tier.
