As if we needed further proof of how far MSM has fallen

Newsweek publishing a nutjob pollster

This should greatly help democrats in future elections since what, 40% of future generations are LGBTQ?

The Dems know what we're doing, playing the long game here.

Lol

Newsweek publishing a nutjob pollster

This passage reflects what we’re seeing in our community:

“The pollster who worked on the new study, George Barna, attributes the unusually high number he found to social and news media coverage that makes it "safe and cool" for young Americans to identify as LGBTQ—whether or not it represents their actual sexual orientation.”

igw has found that the high number identifying as "Christian", is because it's safe and cool, whether or not it represents their actual beliefs.

i guess i just don't see Christ guarding the US border with an AR-15, working the states to be able to overthrow elections, and always voting down policies that help the poor and working class while always voting for policies that help the rich.

and yet that's exactly what the so called self professed Christian coalition votes every election.

There's definitely no longer a stigma around being LGBTQ for teenagers. Thankfully, it's becoming less of a situation where LGBTQ teens are attacked (physically and emotionally) for expressing their sexuality. And, as in most things, "cool" depends on the social context of the group.

I know that was meant as a dig but every evangelical church I have been in would tell you something really similar to your first paragraph. You go off the rails from there, but your first paragraph is a concept that most Christian's are very in tune with.

"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shallenter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."--It is in the manual.

I couldn’t agree more. But I’m more emphasizing that kids round these parts are declaring they’re LGBTQ when they have no idea if they are/aren’t because it’s “cool.”

They have expanded the alphabet groupings so much that kids go looking to put themselves under it because it is "cool" to belong to these "marginalized" groups (edit to add: quotes used because how marginalized can you be if people are going out of their way to associate with you and/or your movement).

Like Demisexual gets a color on the LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ flag. Look up the definition for that. "I don't want to sleep with you unless we have an emotional connection." Cool, I say that's me then and now I'm queer protected and I don't even have to mess around with other dudes. So yeah, 40% of Gen Z or whatever identifies that way because they aren't gay, they just want a piece of the in group. Well to do white teenage girls can go on Tik Tok and join the oppression olympics.

"off the rails"????????

what did i say that wasn't spot on true? (and you know is true).

and if it's those who have hijacked the "Christian" name, but don't do as Jesus would do, but way too often the exact opposite, then don't call me out for only pointing out their doing so, but call out those who have hijacked the brand, and used it to pursue agendas completely contrary to he they claim to represent.

Always look into what the questions were. The poll cited never asked people directly whether they were gay or straight.

Instead, LGTBQ status was inferred by how they answered a long list of questions about attitudes toward sexuality.

It's pretty clear that the methodology blurs the line between "I am exceptionally tolerant and even sympathetic to the struggles of LGBTQ people" and "I am one of them".

Because it is your caricature of what you want to criticize.

Which is fair given that sexuality is a spectrum, right? But kids don’t realize that and instead opt for a declaration that is simpler - especially when it’s so cool now.

It's also possible that what's cool and acceptable will help define what's normal in the future. It's not like sexuality is universal for all time. Just ask the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Wonder if the poll's misrepresentation of the findings was intentional or not.

i didn't falsely caricature anyone or anything, and you know it.

it just was an inconvenient truth for those who embrace the name, then behave in an opposite manner.

and only those who do so.

those who actually follow the path are not included in my critique, but we don't seem to hear from them in these discussions, or in the media, which is a shame.

The Newsweek article about the poll includes several quotes by George Barna of the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University. The quotes are opinions concerning why the Millennials answered as they did. The article quotes Barna so often that it comes off as practically an op-ed piece.

So we have a poll whose questions and methodology may be subject to criticism, and an opinion piece by one of the persons who worked on the poll. A person who offers his own ideas on why the subjects answered the poll as they did.

No, you are trying the tried and true "gotcha" of "Jesus said give to the poor" and trying to conflate that to "so you are wrong to have an issue with handing over your money to a third party who does all sorts of stuff that Jesus would also not agree with with the money they took from you as opposed to letting you use that money in the directed charitable fashion that you would prefer."

"Ooooh...Republicans claim to be Christian's but want border control. What about helping all those poor people who just want a life. Why there are absolutely no reasons to want that under control...like human trafficking, drugs, etc. that come across with them...."

"You like guns, Jesus would not have guns."

Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

Apparently he wasn't against having personal protection for some reason or another. He healed that servant who was only being told what to do, but we are to assume that one of his disciples did not just suddenly find a sword that day....

So again, you want to try and frame a political discussion around a caricature of people "not following what Jesus and the bible wanted" when those same people could make equally cogent arguments to support their political POV. I don't want to hurl the socialist epithet at you, but I think you are as close to that as we had on the board. You see this type of argument rolled out by socialists quite often, "hypocrites...Jesus was a socialist." No, he wasn't. He did not go to Caesar and say, "hey, can you take money from these folks to solve societies ills?" Nope. He put that individually on all of his followers. In fact, he did not really care about monetary wealth at all.

I say we do our own research, look at the data (especially the data they don't want us to see), and make a personal decision.

I say we do our own research
Most mass shootings are committed by adult men, that is true.

Census data shows that about 67 percent of adult men in the United States are non-Hispanic Whites.

James Alan Fox, a criminologist at Northeastern University, studied mass shooting data 1976 to 2019 and found that 64 percent of shooters were White.

So... 64%, 67%, some judgment calls obviously, since race is often not straightforward, but...

I think we can say my premise was FALSE. I was WRONG.

Why?

Fox also noted that media coverage tends to focus more on White shooters — possibly because most violence happens within racial and ethnic groups, not between them. So White shooters tend to have White victims — and to be covered more intensively by the mostly White media. And attacks that get more coverage are easier to remember.

That difference in coverage makes it easier for people (like me) to make false conclusions.

That Demisexual thing is a bridge too far.

At least you finally admitted it, though your comparison of the Northeastern study doesn't specify the age brackets of said shooters. Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland - none of those are old white guys.

Those kids are either W or P, as in wantsexual and promiscuous.

Thank goodness we’re all learning the Greek alphabet so that we can add those letters when we run out of our own.

I don't doubt that. Does it bug you? Kids have been declaring they're cisgender straight when they have no idea if they are/aren't because it's "cool" for quite a while, too. I hope that all kids have the room to find who and what they really are. That would be awesome.

Depends what you mean by “bug.” I certainly don’t want my kids to think they’re supposed to be something they’re not because of peer pressure. Do you?

It seems to me the problem is the peer pressure, not the thing they are being pressured towards. Do you feel differently? I certainly don't want my kids to be gay or cis or straight or trans or bi or anything because of peer pressure. I want them to be who they are because it's who they are and proud of it.

What the findings in this poll, however flawed it might be, point to don't change that. Feel the same way whether the "cool" thing is being a jock, goth, a womanizer, or LGBTQ. Self-determination and realizing your true self is the coolest thing.
