Highlight:

Šefčovič earlier rejected suggestions EU countries would abandon VAT, one of Trump’s grievances.
He said the EU had spent “some time and energy” to explain to US counterparts how the sales tax works, citing its use in more than 160 countries.

Trump has no clue on VAT going back to the 16 debate with Clinton. If he is such a stable genius why does such a simple concept confuse him

Heck, there are people on this board who have argued for VAT here

What criteria are you using to determine “better”?

& as far as Tesla’s head start, Chinese companies typically steal tech from leading edge companies which negates head starts in a hurry…

How much of a threat? Tesla had records sales in China in 2024. Also, Ives dresses like a pudgy clown.

Musk personally acknowledged the strength of BYD and other Chinese automakers last year, confirming they would “pretty much demolish most other companies in the world” if not for trade barriers.

I've heard interviews with the Ford CEO talking about how blown away by how far the Chinese cars have come in the last few years. Sure we can protect our domestic firms with tariffs for domestic consumers.... But the rest of the world doesn't care about that. They'll keep sucking up Chinese EVs.

BYD sold 1 million cars in 1Q. About 3x Tesla sales.

The car industry there is cut throat. BYD has like 5 serious competitors domestically. All that subsidies accusations were bullshit. They got free land etc at the initial phase of their start up. Not now when they are selling millions of EVs a year.

the chinese market twice the size of the US market at over 30+ million car sales a year. And since December 2024 over 50% of all new cars are EVs.

Tesla is considered a boomers car by most there -- considered to be old fashion and with antiquated technology by the Chinese consumers especially the younger generation. Their sales has been gradually on the downward trajectory a while now.

I never said they couldn't do well. What are their margins?

Tesla will also do well and had a good year in China. When is the last time you drove a Tesla?

Everyone knows now that the admin added in more than just the actual tariff amounts. And I get that the notion of just complaining about a trade imbalance doesn't make sense.

But it's also true, isn't it, that other nations have various other ways, besides tariffs, of manipulating trade imbalances? I've read that currency manipulation as one example. I think there are others, too?

If that's true, how do we account for that if that's something we feel we should push back on? Could you make a simple formula to cover those other forms of "unfair" advantage or would you have to go on a case-by-case basis?

Margins matter too. BYD's gross margins of 20.6% don't just outpace Tesla; they surpass BMW (XE:BMW), Mercedes-Benz (XE:MBG), and Toyota (JP:7203) (TM). Yet BYD's market cap sits at just one-fifth of Tesla's, despite nearly taking the global EV sales crown.

Currency manipulation is tracked by the US Treasury and reported to Congress twice a year.

I do not know how many are pure free trade, they exist, but many accept limits. I think many realize importing so much of our pharma from China is bad and we need to make our own fighters.

I am just a big believer in picking one's battles, and that is far from what we are doing.
Trump keeps it simple. One battle: Us against the World.

Navarro used to be on WarRoom all the time.
Peter Navarro was so widely known as an idiot, even in the first Trump administration, that they actively tried to exclude him from meetings so they would not have to deal with his idiocy. They could not get Trump to understand that he should not be listening to that fraud
