Are Trump's beautiful tariffs

I'll help you out because you're clueless. The reason the dollar is the world reserve currency is because no other countries trust other currencies. Now places China or Europe could hurt the U.S. by going to a gold back system or Bitcoin system, but it would require them giving up their ability to print their own currency.

Now communist f#ck twats like Xi aren't going to do that because they're miserable f#cks who want to control and enslave their own citizens. So, instead they'll devalue their currency, which will hurt their own citizens, chases inflation, and make it more expensive to purchase commodities priced in dollars. They would also suffer higher employment as their businesses struggled to sell the goods that Americans stopped purchasing. They will sell fewer goods and services at lower prices and margins. As always is the case, f#ck communists.
China doesn’t have the ability or money to extend trade war with U.S.

Why would they want to? Trade has got the country where it is today. 800 million people from poverty to the middle class within a generation. Globalisation works for China.

Fyi It's sitting on over USD 3 trillion in cash with a population that has a 44% savings rate. (Versus 3% for the US.)

It's an opportunity that has been wasted.

The US isnt even China's largest trading partner – ever since Trump 1.0

ASEAN trading block is now. Example: lots of Chinese EVs here. Inexpensive and very good quality. Better than Teslas.

That was an intentional shift, lessons learned so to speak from Trump 1.0

What does US export to China? Soybeans and LNG?

These tables are interesting. The third column is central government debt by country as percentage GDP while fourth column is third plus local government debt as percent GDP. China has no central government debt while provincial governments hold debt equal to 77% GDP. I guess the provincial debt is denominated in yuan. Not my bailiwick so maybe that is why I find it interesting.

I didn’t realize how much sovereign debt is in place globally.

Trump will add on to Tariffs bring them up to 50%+
Off topic-
I saw some school board back east had a public vote to decide mascot of high school. The winner was… Spartans, Someone filed suit saying it was unacceptable because racist because the Spartans had slaves-the helots. I thought the helots were other Greeks so can’t understand why racist. Do you know if the helots were Greeks or is it unclear?

The story goes Leonidas told the helots they could leave before the final stand at Thermapoli (sp?) but the helots chose to stay.

That's not true. The Chinese EV are already better than Tesla and cheaper. There are over 100 EV car companies in China. The competition is cutthroat.

FYI. 55% of all new cars there are either hybrids or electric. And its twice the size of the US car market.

BYD is already outselling Teslas despite their head start.
What criteria are you using to determine “better”?

& as far as Tesla’s head start, Chinese companies typically steal tech from leading edge companies which negates head starts in a hurry…

No clue but I bet someone on here will know

"self-induced economic nuclear winter"

That's a description from a Trump SUPPORTER.

"We are in the process of destroying confidence in our country as a trading partner, as a place to do business, and as a market to invest capital... [if] we launch economic nuclear war on every country in the world, business investment will grind to a halt, consumers will close their wallets and pocket books, and we will severely damage our reputation with the rest of the world that will take years and potentially decades to rehabilitate."

I don’t know if still true but there was a period that certain Chinese equipment had a bad quality reputation and for the same equipment US had a good reputation. US companies would have the equipment manufactured in China, transship through the US, exporting as though US equipment. The equipment manufactured in China was however produced to US spec and likely strict quality control. Maybe I am not right but would be inclined to buy equipment manufactured for US companies in China with strict spec and quality control but not goods manufactured there for Chinese companies.

China will have no choice. They will blink or deal with collapse of their manufacturing sector. It will leave for India and Vietnam

I'd say they have the capacity to hold out for a pretty long time.

It's likely less a question of economic wherewithal than political wherewithal. And Xi has a huge advantage over Trump in that regard.

Yesterday as I did my laundry I took time to read the tags on all my shirts. Some casual, some dress, some high end. Mostly America-based companies.

Made in Bangladesh, Made in Vietnam, Made in China, Made in India, Made in Indonesia. A few were made in the USA, including two from Duluth Trading Company.

Chinese drywall and iron piping and fittings were dogshit. Nobody wants to use Chinese construction material anymore except in limited circumstances. Too hard to sue and collect absent a bond, which most suppliers don't have to give

Of course other countries want to talk to Trump, to make him realize how stupid he is. Israel, for example, will remind him that their actual tariffs on USA products is zero percent, not some other made up number. Trump made up all the numbers.

The insanity continues to worsen every day. Peter Navarro has cited an alleged expert named "Ron Vara" in his book "Death by China" as well as in a memo Trump has quoted in support of tariffs. Turns out Ron Vara is an anagram of Navarro. If this were movie script the studios wouldn't even give it the time of day.

Gee, maybe some of the car dealers will have to cut their 'Dealers Fee' of $700+ they've charged on the last 2 cars I've bought.

I think many of you think a 25% tariff is going to mean prices to up 25% and I don't think that's going to be the case.

Yes, but prices will still go up.

Interesting how the people complaining about inflation in 2024 don't care about what these tariffs are doing in 2025.

I have been to China to inspect manufacturing facilities & this has been the case every time, meaning requiring them to implement additional qualifications, inspections, etc. In some cases, adding separate lines for our products vs those sold elsewhere were required due to lack of QC…

Most countries accept that tariffs have not been balanced and plan to negotiate promptly. With China likely not the case because they see this as a weapon to be used politically. Better to resolve now then to allow it to progress to even worse conditions weakening the US political position further.
