Archie's recruiting

I love it when people make blanket statements with no in depth reasons for said statement.

Enlighten us on why his post is "simple-minded and small world view"?

I know I sure as hell wasn't raised with ice hockey.
You can use almost any stereotype you want...and they all fall apart as simple minded and small world-view generalizations...

I don't need to list examples.

However, I do think Indiana HS kids know a heckuva lot more about Bi-Color Sweet Corn than basketball...which is why we havent been as successful at basketball lately...

So stupid

The rules are the same in each state.

That could be a good thread title/topic for the offseason...

“People born or living in the State of ______ inherently know more than anyone else in the world about ______.”
I hope you got a chance to read the thread on rafters, you and fpeaugh were mentioned as spot on posters

Well, if you are an IU fan (which you aren't), you have certainly lowered our class average. So, in a way, you could be right. Throw in cryin'ho and Skankster, and our overall basketball IQ is completely in the toilet.
Well, yours is, anyway. But you already told us that.

Idk what rafters are...but it sounds like a little logical thinking viewing the IU bb program in its current state of Archie’s Hoosiers is used by whatever rafters are...

doesnt sound like Archie Apologists...

What is stupid is not being more forthcoming regarding statements made.

Simply saying something is simple minded and small world-view is well... simple minded.

Rupp Rafters is a cesspool.

“You HAVE to land elite recruits to win anything!”

(Cough, Cough.) Virginia, Villanova, Texas Tech.

I’ll explain this to you W2B. Kentucky is way more successful than Indiana is. Currently. But Kentucky will always find a way to fall apart around the Elite 8 because Calipari is a Tom Crean level of coach. Simply put, he isn’t that smart. Now, I’m not one of Archie’s biggest fanboys. But I’ve talked to good basketball people that have basically told me that Archie was 100% the smartest X and O mind in that family, (AM,SM, JC.) I’m not going to write Archie off just yet, because after year 2 at Dayton, he really took off.

Example: I know nothing about Hockey, I grew up in Indiana.
A guy that grows up in Minnesota has a much better chance of playing and knowing a lot about the game of Hockey for example.

I agree.

I grew up in Indiana. Had one pair of skates growing up but some of my earliest memories are of attending high school basketball ball games as a child and listening to Pacers games on the radio.

Raised 4 kids in Mich who all played hockey over 22 years. There are 20 ish rinks within 1/2 hour of our house. Folks up here know alot about hockey. They eat, sleep and drink it. I had to take adult learn to play hockey classes to understand the game and try and keep up.

On the other hand, my Indiana born wife knows more about basketball than 80% of folks up here including UofM fans.

Hockey is a bad example because hockey is mostly played in the northern states. Basketball is nationwide and played on all states. I believe your thinking that Indiana fans are more knowledgeable than anyone other state is outdated and somewhat arrogant. Many more states have leveled the playing field with the outdated Indiana.

Is that an opinion or do you have facts to back up your assertion?

I believe that the gap has been narrowed but basketball is still the king in Indiana and because of that, I still believe Indiana fans in general, are better students of the game.

I feel sorry for those that missed the glory days under RMK. He taught the game of basketball to the fans through his TV show and Indiana coaches from grade school to high school used much of RMK's concepts.

Or fans and kids have not learned much from the coached we have had since. I would love to have Archie spend more time breaking down film and showing fans what we are doing well and what needs improvement.

Our fans under 30 have not witnessed a good head coach until now. Many don't know how to recognize a good coach and think basketball is all about stockpiling 5 star recruits. RMK recruited role players and players that needed to watch from the bench along with elite talent. Building a team requires many different players. Archie will be smart with his recruiting and not take a player just to make the fans feel better about our class rankings. I continue to see that Archie is building the program with a good foundation.

Me too...preferably leading to improved in-game decision making and furthermore leading to more wins...

Good to see we are on the same page!

We like to recognize great moments in message history by honoring those that have displayed that greatness. You should come by and say hello sometime.

Kentucky, where dentists and universities worth attending are getting harder to find by the minute. In a state where Louisville and Lexington exist, it's sad that you have to travel all the way to Owensboro in order to get a decent post secondary education.

Now, now. No shade to be thrown at Northern Kentucky University, Highland Heights (6 miles as the crow flies from Cincinnati). Good hoops, too.

Thanks for putting this together, Pater.

When we signed Coach Miller, what I hoped to see was a coach that could do more with less. I wasn’t concerned about recruiting at all. Often times we spend so much time looking at the players that we forget about the coach. Or, we assume that talent exists in a vacuum. For example, I have no doubt, and this is merely MY opinion, Bo Ryan makes the NCAA tournament with Coach Creans year 3 roster, and each successive Indiana roster.

It’s so frustrating.

Listen, the B10 hasn’t won an NCAA title in almost 20 years. And here we are, a conference afterthought that can’t even seem to string together a trio of NCAA APPEARANCES.

(It’s here that I apologize for going off into multiple ranting tangents).

Did, I mention that it’s so frustrating?

Every season during the Crean era I discounted my expectations for coaching. I am sick of doing that. Slap me in the face, but why can’t we be like Purdue? Painter seems to have built a resume that is as good as Keady’s. And he seems to be doing more with less. He’s a damn good coach.

I hope coach miller can show that he can do more with less. He has the roster for us to have a very, very good season. When I look at your above summary, it’s clear that we have the talent. It’s clear that the roster is being constructed in a thoughtful manner. This isn’t Tom Crean putting together a team like I draft my fantasy football team (no thoughts towards the next season, unlimited waiver moves, stash high upside RBs I get on the cheap). No, he seems to be recruiting just fine.

But, coaching?

Can we honestly say that our team last year seemed to be better than the sum of its parts? Did it seem like Romeo (an excellent player, who had a great season for a freshman), was being coached? Too much standing around. Not enough offensive movement without the ball. It just didn’t seem like our players were being put into a position to mask their weaknesses and accentuate their strengths.

I hope this season is much different.

My patience is running out.....and all that ends up remaining is lowered expectations and higher apathy.

We have The talent. Wouldn’t it be nice to finally start putting a premium on our expectations each year based on our coach? That’s what I hoped for with miller. It’s time.
Terrific post, this is a massive year for Miller and the program.
