Anyone else talk to the Citrus and Orange Bowl reps...

The Citrus Bowl lady was kinda like "well, there's four B10 teams vying for the playoff, and since only three will probably make it, we have the first pick, and are checking things out here."

We were all kinda like "no offense, but we're not really interested in the Citrus Bowl right now....sorry." 😄

About 5 mins later the Orange Bowl guys come walking by. I call them over to the tailgate, tell them the Citrus Bowl guys were just there, and they were like "nah, you guys don't want to play in that trash Bowl, you need to come to us". 😄

We were all like..."yeah, we agree." 👍

Bowl committees are a pure boondoggle. Some of those guys get $500k+ salaries and all expense paid trips for kinda organizing a bowl game as a part-time gig.

Plus, they get sweet ass blazers...

It's more to make the people on the Committee feel like They are important and contributing something. Flying to different locations, staying at first class hotels, running up dollars on unlimited expense accounts on food and booze at top dollar bars and restaurants, all at the bowl Game's Expense. You know, living the lifestyle of a Politician.

We were actually hanging with the AD in charge of the Varsity Club when I went over and snagged the Orange Bowl guys. He told my wife there's no better guy he'd wants schmoozing bowl dudes than me when I went over to BS with them. 😄👍

If they go anywhere other than the Playoffs,they will have numerous guys opt out,including Rourke most likely.
But it will be a great experience for those who do play,not to mention the extra practice time and exposure for the program.

That was the best part....once I explained to our crew that the Citrus wasn't a playoff bowl (while talking to the Citrus guy/girl)...everyone kinda got less interested in going to Orlando. 😄

The Orange Bowl is the site of one of the two national semifinal games this year. The CFP committee’s seeding of the playoff teams, and what happens in the early rounds, will dictate which two teams are playing in the Orange Bowl.

I have no idea why Orange Bowl reps would be at the IU game and talking up their bowl game. They don’t need to. As I said, they’re hosting a natty semifinal. There won’t be invitations to play in the Orange Bowl. Participants will have to earn their way there.

Bowl reps have visited later season games of possible participants as long as I can remember, I guess because they can ! Salo Sredni , the treasurer, and another member spent about 20 minutes with us.

Yes, bowl reps have historically attended late-season games in order to better size up teams, get a feel for fan enthusiasm, and decide whether the school/team is a good fit for their bowl. If there's a fit, then there's the sale, and then plans for a joint announcement of the bowl match-up. Conference tie-ins/affiliations mean individual bowls no longer have broad discretion like they used to, but some of the glad-handing and selling (both ways) still takes place.

As everyone knows, this year, for the first time, there is a 12-team tournament. The Orange Bowl is the site of a late game (semi-final) in the tournament. (The Cotton Bowl has the other semi). The Orange Bowl, to my knowledge, has no say in the selection of the tournament field, the rankings or the seeding of teams. They won't be extending invitations to teams, and they have no control over who will play in their game on January 9.

Then again, who knows what goes on behind the scenes. For all I know maybe these bowls do have some influence with the committee. I'm not suggesting anything improper, but maybe one of the reasons (or even the main reason) Orange Bowl reps were in Bloomington on Saturday was to meet with Michigan's AD, Warde Manuel, chair of the CFP selection committee. Maybe they're making a push for the committee to seed Miami/put Miami (assuming they still make the field) in a bracket that leads to the Orange Bowl. Or maybe they talked to the Gator Bowl people and learned how well IU travels for bowl games, and they want us in that bracket! Just spitballing here.

Word is usual visitor sections. Personally, I think it would be cool if it were like the FA Cup and visitors got larger allotments. But, is what it is.

They have 106K seats, you can get your hands on a ticket.

I think we have a decent shot against them.
