No, not the same thing. It's saying he goes they can play as they'd be shooters. In the case of Anderson it's being able to defend. Hunter needs to be healthy and have basketball conditioning. If those conditions aren't meet they won't play so their ability to shoot wouldn't matter.Key comment:
“I think there’s two guys who, hopefully, knock on wood, can become more bonafide shooters for us in Damezi Anderson and Jerome Hunter,” Miller said.
Is that not the same as saying "I hope these guys can shoot"?
You can "read it" that way. I see it more as "I know they can score and shoot: I don't know if they will score and shoot."Key comment:

Indeed. Distracted posting can result in gibberish.Reading that was difficult.

So for our "shooter" who shot 23% from 3 and 28% overall, it's his defense that needs to improve? I'm not trying to pick on him, but Anderson needs to raise his game at every level from last year to contribute this year. Hope he does.
It looks like DA's shot has been changed a little. His feet look to be a little more staggered and less square to the rim, while some of that wasted motion has gone out of his upper body. His elbow is more inline with his right leg. It's still not natural looking, but it's a change. He did only hit 6 or 7 out of 20 in the 3pt contest though.

Archie needs to take 5 in 2020 because Damezi won’t be here after this season.
Of course you are right overall but I think that since Archie is a defense first coach, you can get on the floor if you play great defense even if your offense is lacking but I don't think the reverse is true. Thus the emphasis on Anderson needing to improve his defense. If he does, then he will see the floor more often and for longer periods of time. At that point, maybe more PT would help him get in the flow better which may help his shooting percentages.
I didn't really watch him in the scrimmage. I was focused on Hunter, on and off the ball. He seemed a little deflated after the 3 pt contest based on his body language. I hope he contributes. It's not easy to change your shot as much as he has, so he's obviously putting in the work.Seems like a nice kid. I expect nothing from him. If he contributes, it will be a bonus.
agreed completely. Hoping the kid shows signs this year and there are several on this board who are higher on him. But I saw deer-in-headlights from him most every time he was on the court. If Hunter remains healthy, Smith doesn't sleepwalk through games, and with the guard rotation we have, Damezi is going to have to show some big improvements to find any playing time.I thought last year when he was on the floor, he just looked lost on both ends. I'd say court and situation awareness is what he needs at both ends of the floor. Both need to improve dramatically over last year before he'll see any meaningful minutes, I hope. I think we've had to play guys despite subpar effort/results for too much of Archie's tenure and hope this year we have the depth to start to reverse that.
Anderson won't have the chance to show he can shoot if he doesn't defend. I'll settle for not getting caught on shot fakes as a start. He looks to have the size and quickness to be a decent defender. I expect he will put in the effort to be a decent defender. He can become good with experience. Shooting is a different matter. Knocking down shots during drills and practice gets you a chance to do it in a game. That is where it matters. So for our "shooter" who shot 23% from 3 and 28% overall, it's his defense that needs to improve? Interesting take...Was this from HS senior year or IU freshman year?Anderson won't have the chance to show he can shoot if he doesn't defend. I'll settle for not getting caught on shot fakes as a start. He looks to have the size and quickness to be a decent defender.
