Consider this: the
first games in the NCAA Tournament don't begin for nearly three weeks. Does it really make sense for anyone to claim that IU has
already reached agreement with a reasonably-capable Div. I coach that (1) has an acceptable record this year, and (2) has a decent chance to advance in the NCAA Tournament?
There really can't be any secrets after the point when someone thinks there actually has been a "verbal agreement" or "understanding". The coach loses all control after that point.
I'm personally aware of a situation where a company reached agreement with a new exec, the exec's wife contacted a realtor to begin house-hunting and the damn realtor told some of the sellers he was trying to find a house for the new exec at XYZ Corporation.
Here's what happens when a bigtime basketball coach foolishly makes such a "verbal agreement":
Former Michigan coach Bill Frieder was fired just before the Wolverines went on a historic run and won the 1989 NCAA Tournament.
