McCollum WILL win consistently at whatever P4 he lands at. The only question is whether or not he's comfortable, willing, whatever... in bringing in more elite level talent...so he's coaching with similar levels of players to the top schools in the country. If he's not, he'll still win more than he loses, he'll still make NCAA tournaments regularly, if not always. But he might struggle winning P4 conference titles, and his tournament successes might be limited. But man, if he is and does.............

Very different times nowadays, for certain. But maybe McCollum IS, in fact, very specific on the types of players he brings in to his program, and maybe that doesn't jive with mindsets, style, whatever...in typical elite high major level players?

I'm just offering the devil's advocate stance on risks with McCollum.

I actually suspect the opposite of all this...and that "game will recognize game"...and that his "Impose your Will" philosophy will resonate with elite level players, not alienate them. Or maybe I should say...the right kinds of elite level players. There's so much talent out there anymore. Bruce Pearl has very few guys that were traditional elite talents...but theres ZERO question he has multiple NBA guys on his roster. He found big, strong, SKILLED, talented, DAWGS, that fit his program and mindset. I STRONGLY suspect McCollum would do the same, with guys that fit his style and philosophies.

I listen to Kent Sterling, Jim Coyle and Indiana Sports Connection the most. There are others that pop up on YouTube that I may check out. There’s one with Steve Risley as guest but I can’t think of the show or host.

It’s just a matter of time before the name leaks out. I was hoping for Beard but our university apparently makes those accused but not convicted of social injustice pay a heavy fine nonetheless. It’s IU’s way of announcing moral superiority. Bloomington is a town where a lying snake, Vauhxx Booker, remains a martyr. Monroe Co. harbors a lot of outspoken, angry people. They pop up on FB all the time. It shouldn’t be any wonder a HOF coach can get fired here, surrounded by an environment of people who feel like they’ve always gotten the short end of the stick. (Please excuse me for my deviation of thought)

If I hadn’t favored Beard, I would have kept my mouth shut. Now watch IU pass on him and “University of Blue Blood” pick him up, winning more championships under his astute tutelage. You heard it here first, just as I warned everyone over a quarter-century ago when people here first started bitching about Knight supposedly losing his ability to relate to modern youth. Does it really make sense for anyone to claim that IU has already reached agreement with a reasonably-capable Div. I coach that (1) has an acceptable record this year, and (2) has a decent chance to advance in the NCAA Tournament?

There really can't be any secrets after the point when someone thinks there actually has been a "verbal agreement" or "understanding". The coach loses all control after that point.

I'm personally aware of a situation where a company reached agreement with a new exec, the exec's wife contacted a realtor to begin house-hunting and the damn realtor told some of the sellers he was trying to find a house for the new exec at XYZ Corporation.

Here's what happens when a bigtime basketball coach foolishly makes such a "verbal agreement":

Agree. If there is anything in place that's further along than "confirmed interest" then the candidate is not an actively working coach. IMO.

Maybe May doesn't "know" that IU will offer him, at this point? Because IU doesn't want him to know that? Stuffshot's post above about timing for these sorts of things, is probably more realistic than anything I've read on here.

And if May didn't know, he'd have been an idiot to not sign the new Michigan deal. Especially if the buyout isn't a huge difference.

Just an example...its very possible him signing that extension IS because either he or Dolson moved past the IU possibility? But logic does make it very possible, if not likely, that Dolson doesn't have an agreement with anyone yet...but does have a list of guys that he knows there's mutual interest in.

Well, it’s not like the school made an announcement of a deal in place. It was only Kent Sterling and a couple other podcasters claiming to have that info, real or imagined.

Regarding the corporate exec’s wife/realtor, what were the consequences of the early announcement? Nothing, I suspect.

I always thought Steve Fisher didn’t pass the eye test with a bit of mousey-ness to him. Then again, I thought Krzyzewski looked like a constipated rat and how did that one work out?

Think about it for a moment, over a week passed between Michigan's public announcement that they were negotiating an extension with Dusty and when the deal was actually signed. If Dolson truly wanted Dusty, do you really believe IU wouldn't make an offer just to keep it a secret from him?

This is a business, not grade school (though some of our previous hires would suggest otherwise). IU isn’t "playing hard to get."
