I'm saying get West Virginia, Pitt, Syracuse, and Penn State to play an MTE in Philly. Back to back games like the old Crossroads. A split gate revenue for an 8k seat arena just doesn't really make a ton of sense financially. Why not just play a home and home series if that's the case?
That Crossroads like event would be cool, and the MTE would be a better place for it.
I think for a school like Penn State...any positive buzz or excitement, in the preseason, is probably a good thing. And a game in the Palestra, against a West Virginia or Pitt, would definitely generate as much more excitement and buzz than a more sterile game in MTE. And I wouldn't think the ticket revenue would be a huge difference versus an MTE game. Maybe though? They wouldn't sell the 8+K necessary to fill half the MTE...so just because there'd be more seats, doesn't mean they'd sell more tickets.
Using our own Crossroads experiences, my understanding was that all the other schools, not named IU, even Purdue most years, struggled to sell their own allotments...PSU would be the "Notre Dame" of the Crossroads in your 4 team scenario. Maybe they get the benefits and money evenly, no matter what? And for them then, sure, piggy backing on the other more followed fan bases makes sense.
But just from an excitement, interest level, chance to create something that's reliably followed...a game against one of those teams at the Palestra has a great chance at doing that. They already have case studies with the B10 games they've played there.
I'm thinking along the lines of the Illinois/Missouri game...the Red River Rivalry...I'd guess they could get West Virginia to come up and play at the Palestra every year, on a similar date in the preseason. They'd sell the arena out easily, they could command higher ticket prices, it'd get a major TV network, I'm sure...
