I maintain that the 23 team had pretty good talent. Their last 5 or 6 games prove my point. Cignetti would've won a bunch with that team!

I've beaten this drum all along. With the understanding that the wins over Akron & Wisconsin were also by slim margins.Lost to Louisville by 7, Penn St by 9, Illinois by 3, Michigan St by 3, and Purdue by 4.
We were a touchdown away from 4 wins and slightly more for another.
That team could easily have been 8-4 instead of 3-9.
Another thought, if Allen was able to sneak 2-3 more wins, would he still be coaching here?
I think cigs could have gotten to 8-4 last year. My Allen scenario was 2-3 more wins or a .500 season.I've beaten this drum all along. With the understanding that the wins over Akron & Wisconsin were also by slim margins.
To answer your question, if they'd have gone 8-4, CTA would absolutely still be here. I also think he would have pulled off an 8ish win season this year. And I also think if he had done that back to back, we'd generally be pleased.
With that said, I don't think there's any realistic chance CTA would have pulled off 11 wins this year. And I don't think he would have generated the buzz and hype that IU got under CCC. But he got rich(er) out of getting fired and seems to be doing okay for himself. It was a magic year for us in Bloomington. So everyone wins.
2-3....probably. They paid a lot of money to get out of that contract because of two very bad season records. A .500 season wouldn't have been considered good by most teams, but it would have gotten IU to a bowl game last year and tacked another year on his contract automatically and, historically, would have been a "good" IU season.I think cigs could have gotten to 8-4 last year. Yup, everyone did well.
