In days of yore, before we stressed the labels of "liberals" and "conservatives" and we became so divided, likeability was vital to a candidate.
These days having an attack dog demeanor (hardly that of a likeable nice guy) against members of the other party wins elections in many parts of the country. When it comes to policies, they simply follow the party playbook. Hell, even the political ads are generic.

Btw the other was a dynamic poster who went by the handle crayfish. He took a Gatling gun to threads with his insightful comments and cutting responses.
