“I don’t like Trump but I like his policies”

Since when? The accusation sounds nice but lacks substance. A bit like the "I know you are but what am I" retort.

So you don't deny being a good little sheep of conservative news?
Pointing out hypocrisy is not a schoolyard retort.

When have I ever agreed with everything Trump says?

You can be against pollution and still not think climate change is caused by man.

Both things can be true.
Except most climate change deniers in DC are so because they don't want to waste money curbing pollution (or force companies to waste money). Of course, those same people are fine subsidizing gas companies so it is probably mostly due to who has bribed them.

Your first sentence is just a leftist fantasy belief. This is why everyone here knows you're Hickory.

Of course, trade deficits by themselves are not necessarily a bad thing. But they're bad when achieved by unfair trade practices, which is what Trump is saying, I believe.

The other factor is revenue from tariffs. If we continue with the Trump tax cuts from his first administration, we'll probably need that revenue, since so many Democrat-implmented programs factored in those tax cuts going away.

Danc, "unfair trade practices" to me include practices such as bait and switch and false advertising.

Is producing products at less cost by paying workers low wages what Trump considers unfair trade policies?

Trump considers any trade imbalance to be unfair.

So if you live in Bangladesh and are far too poor to by an American car, but work at the shirt factory making and exporting the Polo shirt that I am wearing today, that is unfair and you must be punished! Ditto for people making my high end dress shirts made in India, Vietnam, Pakistan. It's a global economy. Some things are both better and cheaper when made elsewhere, even if the company is American owned.

No, paying less isn't the issue. Using child labor is an issue. Using forced labor is an issue. Using coal as your main energy source while paying Democrats to push for a required level of electric vehicles is an issue.

Danc, good points.

We once used child labor as a developing country, but as time went on we passed laws based upon such things as human rights as enforced by our government.

Hopefully, as countries become more developed in terms of wealth and human rights fair trade issues such as child labor will disappear as happened in our country.

Speaking of unfair trade practices.....

To the extent that China does things like stealing technology, infringing patents and trademarks and stealing personal information, Trump's tariffs won't prevent those, even without his 90-day retreat.

When in college more than six decades ago I naively felt international trade unions would spread union membership around the globe. The spread would include worker and human rights in underdeveloped countries as happened in the U.S.

Instead union membership and influence declined in the U.S. and never got a foot hold in the less developed nations.

Will high tariffs by the U.S. accomplish advancing worker and human rights in countries taking advantage of practices such as low wages and child labor? Or will this dream fail just as my dream about international unions did?

Yikes, now responding to my own posts. Feared the day might come when I would exclusively end up only talking to myself. Alas, this day may have come.

At the age of 12 worked on several farms one Summer for a family friend who owned 13 tenant farms.

Worked hard all Summer and loved being one of the farm hands. Worked as part of a team with all the tenant farmers joining together each day, going from farm to farm.

At the end of the Summer the owner and I spent the day together. He mentioned my not being paid and asked how much was I expecting. I suggested $10 for the entire Summer. Never got the 10 bucks.

In retrospect, I should have asked for a great deal more. Asking for far more would have gained more respect from him.

I doubt Trump prioritizes ending child labor in other nations.

7-12 years average to up to 15 for the larger plants

1. Find the site, what do you plan on building, find a lender, subsidies, etc. this is all after lengthy cost benefit analysis
2. Prelim site plsn
3. Lender involvement and approvals
4. Schematic Design and approval by owner, govt and lenders
5. Repeat and rinse at design development.
6. Repeat and rinse at construction docs
7. Build it
In the interim you are value engineering; adding and subtracting.

I didn’t even mention the environmental phases pre and post construction, the infrastructure around the plant, etc. tariffs or no tariffs? Can we attract the workers, how much do we pay them, etc.

It’s a lot when you are talking about large scale industry.
That’s why I laugh when people say manufacturing is magically coming back soon. I know how long it takes to get a factory up and running. Even if we started building a shitload of factories today, by the time they’re finished, they’ll be 95%-99% automated when they’re finished. Taking several years to finish, with advances in AI and robotics along the way, people aren’t working in them.

I should have used governments subsidizing industries - which we do, too - as a factor in unfair trade.

We were discussing unfair trade practices. I don't think we'll be exporting Big Macs any time soon.

Labor laws for underage persons in the US include limited hours and their use is regulated.

Besides, every teenager in the US should have a job.

"The governor’s proposal would remove all regulations on how late and how long 16- and 17-year-olds can work. It would also remove their guarantee of a meal break and would waive time restrictions on 14- and 15-year-olds if those teenagers are homeschooled or attend virtual school."

Doesn't sound unreasonable.

I worked for farmers - my family and others - when I was a pre-teen and then detassled corn when I first could at age 13. I also had paper routes.

It scarred me for life - I actually grew up thinking work was normal.

There are huge former GM buildings in Kokomo that could be used immediately, with some renovation. And that's true of any old manufacturing towns.

New factories aren't the measure - many of the current factories in the US can be expanded physically and by adding shifts/more workers. And that's already happening.

Correct. A progressive will be the nominee in 28. They’re sticking with the Harris failed to lean into woke hard enough. AOC is the leader of the Dem party at this point. It’s clear. Celebs media etc will continue to give progressives all the play

MM66, yikes, if AOC is the current leader of the Democratic party they are even in worst shape than I thought.

About like having the cute Allice being air lifted from New York to the Wonderland of Congress.

While thinking about it, Congress is like the Land of Oz complete with a Wizard who thinks he is in control.

Unlike Alice, the Wizard probably won't promise to air baloon AOC back to their home state of New York.

Woke or bust!

If losing minority voters isn’t a woke-up call, there’s no woking up.

Alien political scientist from a far-advanced society lands in the US and after 15 minutes scratches its puzzler and wonders, why is there no party representing the economic majority?

MM66, the GOP has a lot going for it. This inclues The Supremes, Congress, most of the state legislatures. and a president who among other things appears to going after his enemies in the media.

This all adds up to plenty of power. The question now before us is whether the power will corrupt them.

MM66, you mentioned Trump acting like a lunatic. Well, combine a person with a narcissistic personality disorder and give him power, the result could be corruption.

The ball, from where I sit, is in the GOP's court. What happens is up to them.

You can't predict who will be the leaders in the party in 28 until you see how everything shakes out in the midterms. Everyone just needs a little patience.
