there's a bigger picture here, and that's how people behave as part of a mob, rather than when they aren't.
whether one likes designated student sections or not for bball, this is a negative downside of it, as anytime a group is insulated, it behaves as it wouldn't otherwise.
for decades even after moving to AH, IU students were dispersed among the adults, rather than isolated, thus insulated, in their own section, with no adults or younger kids contiguously around them.
students didn't do vulgar and stupid chants then, because they just wouldn't pull that immature stuff with adults and young kids next to them.
insulate then in their own pods, and their conduct changes significantly, and always for the worse.
and yes, there probably is a bigger societal lesson in this as well, besides just student sections at bball games.
